Does your hair pattern change once you do the big chop? I was reading a few threads and some people said that their hair pattern changed once they did the big chop and that their new growth was deceiving? I'm a little confused, is this true?

I don't remember noticing a difference, although I wore braids during my transition and never really paid attention to texture. I have been natural more years in my life than relaxed so having known my hair to be as it is, if there was any difference between my new growth when I was relaxed and my natural hair after the BC, it must've been so minimal coz I didn't notice it. I just got the hair I always knew I had when I stopped relaxing. (Again, my natural hair and I go a long way back; my new growth was only around for less than ten years so we may not have gotten that well-acquainted.)

Thanks for your response, that's what I was hoping for because I can't really see the texture of my hair now changing drastically even though I haven't been transitioning for that long.

HUGE change once I cut my hair. My natural hair would fist fight with my relaxed hair so it just looked like one big matted mess LOL I didn't care, wanted my natural hair anyway. When I BC'd my hair was softer, curlier, thicker, and way nicer than I thought it was going to be. I was pleasantly surprised :drunk:

My texture definitely changed after I BC'ed. My crown looked 4b but after I cut it was more 4a. Some people attribute this to scab hair or the lack of moisture people have on their new growth that hinders them from seeing their true texture. Basically after some people BC they realize their hair was a little looser then they expected.

Right now my hair is doing okay considering I'm only 2 months post, but I'm hoping it doesn't get too bad and become matted, trying to control the crown is a bit difficult, but I'm hoping that my hair becomes softer and curlier and thicker, it's wavy & I have small coils now, I can't wait until this is all over!

Yes, how do you properly moisturize your new growth? This will help with my regimen

Also, people often mistake their new growth as being wavy because the permed ends are weighing down the new growth stretching it out. Sometimes people are disappointed to discover that what they thought was 3c hair is actually 4z once the permed ends are gone.

I understand that the permed ends weigh the hair down, but can they really go from 3c to 4z?

For me I had to co-wash everyday and I mainly concentrated on my new growth. I also used regular conditioner as a leave-in and sealed with oil. That's was the only thing that would keep my hair feeling moisturized but maybe some other people have different ways of doing it.

I thought my hair was wavy in the front and loose curly in the back when I was transitioning. When I cut I found out that it was looser curly in the front and tight/coily in the back.

That's why you can't really tell what kind of hair you have until you cut off those ends.

I'm not sure what the natural hair will look like once I cut the relaxed ends off (wayyyyyyyyy down the line ). I will say that 9+ months into the transition, and I have noticed the coils have gotten fatter and more defined. They are much easier to manage than my texturized ends, which are frizzy in many parts. So I don't know that the texture has changed, but I do see a clear pattern developing now that I have more new growth.

Also, not sure if this is true for everyone, but I have noticed some things over the years. When I first came here with overprocessed hair, my new growth had NO pattern whatsoever when it grew in. Now 3 years later that my hair is healthier and I've been texturizing, I notice that I have a clear coil pattern. That's the only texture change that I've really witnessed, and the evidence is in my fotki.

Depends on how long your relaxed ends are. The longer the relaxed ends, the more they weight down your curls, giving them a looser appearance. Once you cut them off, you will see your true texture.

IMO no one's hair texture changes from a hair cut. Chemicals applied to the hair, changes in one's body (e.g. menopause, pregnancy, disease, etc), DNA - things like that change one's hair texture.

I think that when one BCs, the natural hair is now "free" from its "dead" weight.

(note: not a digg or insult to relaxed heads, it only relates to going natural from relaxed. People who relax and keep it healthy, do not have "dead weight" for hair; I know I didn't when I was a regular relaxer wearer.)

I BCd in June and my texture did not change but was more or less free to be itself. If anything, it let me see the varying textures throughout my head and finally find the right combination of products that make it pop. When I was transitioning and had the two textures, I was tangled all the time and had to be extra careful with the relaxed hair and the line of demarcation. Now I can be normal with my hair since it is rid of its multiple personalities. LOL

My texture didn't change, it just got free-er, wilder and bigger along with the length. The length also has a tendency to stretch the texture out due to the weight of the hair but it doesn't actually physically change.

:yep: with headstrong.

Thanks Ladies for all of the responses, how do you take care of the line of demarcation? If I plan on transitioning for a while this will be very helpful.

Wow - I can't believe you only transitioned for 7 months - you have ALOT of hair already! :yep:

LynnieB do you mind if I drool over your hair just a little? That siggy picture is unreal and beautiful!

this is why i have a patch in the FRONT of my head (call me crazy) that is completely natural coz i cut off all the relaxed ends. i wanted to see the texture without the weight of the relaxed hair. and mine seems the same, it only shrinks more.

my texture didnt change at all... but like someone else said it did become more "manageable" cuz the relaxed/natural hair weren't battlin anymore

after doing the big chop, my hair was just fuzzy and undefined. after letting it grow out, my coil pattern got tighter and tighter.

I was honestly going to do the same exact thing yesterday, I don't think you're crazy because I wanted to see the texture of my hair, I'm only planning on cutting a few strands and see what happens to my hair, but I'm definitely very very curious!!

^^^lol do it! and its really fun aswel coz i practice defining my curls on that section and it looks gr8!

Mine didn't change persay but it shrunk/curled up more once the relaxed ends were cut off. 3
The relaxed ends were weighing it down and stretching out the curl pattern.
