Has/does anyone use these? What were your results? There are 2 types I believe; w/ or w/o formaldrahyde (sp?) Is this safe for our hair? Can you get good results doing it at home instead of a salon? Please discuss

bump!

Id like to know too!!

Or if there is a way to lightly uncurl some of my curls a bit! ...maybe a natural way perhaps? something that will just last for a day or hours?

I got my first treatment May of '07. I am natural around 3c. My hair has continued to grow with no negative side effects. My curl pattern is significantly looser. When I got it done the first time, the stylist used the formaldehyde version. I've done it at home, but I wouldn't recommend it. The fumes are too bad. I recommend you getting the version without formaldehyde that will straighten your hair and doing it yourself to avoid the high salon costs. Check ebay.

I bought a version without formaldehyde, but it is not the right one. The version I bought doesn't straighten the hair so I can't really tell you how effective the other version (without formaldehyde that straightens the hair) is.

My previous BKT's last longer than four months b/c I use really mild natural or organic shampoos. Detangling my natural hair is a breeze and very little hair comes out. The only downside is that since I use natural shampoos my hair has never been BKT free since I got my first treatment. This means that my roots are curlier after the treatment while the curls toward my ends are a lot looser. It will probably take me years to get all the BKT out of my hair. It doesn't bother me though.

If your hair is not healthy, but it is natural, your hair will be a lot straighter than if a natural with healthy hair got it done. (This happened to my friend. Her hair is soooooooo damaged. She is a natural. When she got BKT done, her hair came out straight. She had a couple of waves in the back. She loved it though).

BKT will loosen your curls if you are natural. If you have a relaxer, it will straighten your hair. Also, being a natural with color treated hair will makes your curls even looser since coloring your hair damages the cuticle. Your curls will get looser every time you get it done if the previous BKT application has not been completely removed before the next application. This will not last for a day or two. It depends on the harshness of the shampoo you use. It can last from two months to longer than four months. I usually get mine done every for months.

It is my understanding that the BKT is NOT a perm. I did some googling on this last night. So you can't technically transition from perm to BKT - unless, of course you want to. I'm definitely interested in doing it - you can't do ANYTHING to your hair for four days after you get the treatment. The non-formaldyhe (sp!) version is called the Coppola - it costs $300-350 at the salon. I kno a relaxed head on this board did the BKT but I can't remember her name - she did a post about it you can probably do a search.

FWIW, the non-formaldehyde BKT has a different type of aldehyde that isnt as strong, and therefore, the straightening results aren't permanent.

None of the BKT products are permanent. The non-formaldehyde BKT with aldehyde just doesn't last as long as the BKT with formaldehyde.

does the formadrehyde free one have any ingredients that would be harmful to our hair?

I'm not sure. I haven't tried it yet. I bought the wrong kind and want to use it up before I try that version. As soon as I do, I'll report back. From what I read, there's nothing in it that is harmful to the hair.
