Sabino Moisture Block experiment/challenge?

Okay, I don't do challenges, and I am rarely over here on the hair side b/c I don't usually see anything that I think would help my hair anymore than the site already has.

But this stuff - it's different.

To me this has the possibility of replacing the Brazilian Keratin treatments I had soooo badly wanted, but could not locate nor afford. Plus it seemed they were unhealthy.

This serum is not only a de frizz agent, but also seals the hair, and the moisture inside.

My trail run with flat ironed hair was successful. I just got the full order today. I plan on wearing it straight this week, and a wash and go the next week.

After that, I plan on using JUST the SMB after wash/condition/leave in. It will replace the Fantasia silicon serum I had been using after each and every wash. I'll be sure to deep condition with heat, and still alternate my protein treatments. I won't be doing a whole lot of flat ironing though, I was never crazy about that. Things will basically stay the same routine wise - but I'm switching up the serum, and won't be piling on conditioners/moisturizers between washes.

Hopefully, this stuff will protect my hair so that I can get a few more inches off a this head.

See, I was thinking EXACTLY the same thing (use to seal my leave-in but no flat iron).

BUT, the instructions discuss water soluble vs. waterproof. On page one of the three page letter that came with my Sabino sample, the paragraph right above the heading "The Truth About Silicones" suggests that waterproof products used with a flat iron at 400 degrees will "drive" the product deeper into the hair and four paragraphs above that they suggest that waterproof products will lock out moisture.

So, IF I am understanding this correctly, Sabino is waterPROOF and when used with excessive heat will be "driven into" (aka "cooked") into the hair shaft, sealing in whatever moisture you applied before the sabino and locking out any moisture after. And since it is waterproof it will last "from shampoo to shampoo" which I interpret to mean that the shampoo and water will not break down the sabino to wash it out.

Now, if I have understood correctly, then 1. they're lying because my sabino only lasted that one application (BUT please note I did not set my flat iron at or near 400 degrees) or 2. it will last and not allow your conditioners or deep conditioners to penetrate into the hair the next time you use them or after repeated use of Sabino.

If the latter is true, how do we get the Sabino out to DC? Or if it does not wash out then why reapply or add more?

I actually liked the way my hair felt immediately after applying and I liked how it felt after the flat iron, but I'm still not understanding if the heat drives it in and it does not come out or if it does come out with shampooing (again making their letter inaccurate where they said it lasts from shampoo to shampoo).

SO, after my babbling, LOL I want to join you. I just want to know that long-term this wonder stuff won't end up damaging my hair.

Go ahead and add me to the experimental challenge/challenging experiment.

^^^i think when they say "from shampoo to shampoo" it means from one wash to the next wash and that's it. as in, shampoo washes the stuff from your hair, so it will last until you wash your hair again.

cuz that's been my experience, shampoo strips it right off your hair.

I was JUST looking up the original thread about 20 minutes ago on this. I have never used it but as I contemplate the next direction for my hair, I've decided to purchase this and try it out. I'm a 4B natural and need something to seal all the moisture in. Even humidity can jack up natural hair; it's almost like my hair is dryer when it's humid.

I'm a 4b also and my hair feels the same way. It feels softer and more moisturized during the winter. I haven't figured out if I treat it better during the winter or what. How is this product used on natural hair?

I'm relaxed and I experiment with this all the time in different ways. I've flatironed with it (not at 400) and the hair stays straight but my ng roots do get a little puffy. I've used it without heat to airdry after adding my leave-in and oil. It definitely cuts down the frizz even when heat is not used to "seal" MB in. I flat ironed this weekend and I was away from home on Monday, and the only moisturizer available was s-curl. I put a little s-curl in my hands and rubbed it through my hair and also on my ends. S-curl is waterbased as I'm sure you already know. Well, lo and behold, the sucka stayed straight and is still straight and today is Wednesday. This morning I used a non-water based moisturizer (from shescentit) but I don't know if it's really penetrating because my hair was already soft. Sabino MB washes out easily with water but it definitely puts some type of barrier around your hair to keep it straight.

Oh....yes, I'm up for the experiment/challenge since I've been doing it anyway.

I'm interested, but afraid to let go of my nightly moisturizing. Will our ends really stay moisturized until the next wash, even if i stretch the next wash to a week? Does this now mean that it will be OK to use a flat-iron weekly due to Sabino use?

I got my sample of the smb and used it according to the directions. I washed and conditioned and left a bit of conditioner in then applied a dime size of mb, blowdried and flat ironed my natural 4b twa on 400 as recommended. While it was str8t it looked great shiney bouncy all that. then I decided that I wanted my naps back so I shampooed four days later and all my naps are gone ladies. YES GONE I am so sad right now, after my bc and four months of growing out my hair I had to go try this stuff and now I fear I'll have to go bc again I have hair in the front that is as stright as relaxed hair and also a patch in the back and my curls are not tight at all it looks so bad, like a wet rat. I can't believe I did this I'll have to shave my head this weekend I can't do anything with it. I wish I could post a pic

I can vouch for the moisturizing. It will feel different to you because you are used to having excess product on your hair, which will wear off over time. That excess makes us feel it's "moisturized" when in fact Victor reminds us that the hair shaft needs 10-11% water to be moisturized (he says water is the best!).

I can honestly say that I feel my ends are moisturized. I wish I could show you a comparison pic of my ends but I don't have before pics; when I flat ironed before without this product, the ends would look mousy/dry. Leading me to want to put product on to "moisturize" it while straight....which weighed it down.

This stuff.....it coats the hairs. My hair is shiny and glossy and dare I say looks like it grows out my head like this. The pic on the right of my siggy is the lifeless product of a flat ironing session the old way. When I get my camera working I'll take some more detailed pics to help you all out.

I am not willing to state whether or not this makes flat ironing weekly safe. Sabino says yes.....based on my hair, I'd be willing to agree....but am hesitant to recommend that to anyone. You may email him to ask about it though - post his answer if you do?

I plan on pretty much following the same reggie as before, with a few more flat ironing sessions throughout the year.

Oh no! Did you clarify? Please don't cut. If it doesn't shampoo out please email Victor Sabino for questions he might be able to suggest something besides cutting - it is his product after all. Sounds like it worked a little to well!

I did e-mail Victor, and he responded very quickly. here is what was said.


Hi Brooke,

Using a dime size was not enough to cover the entire head especially on African American hair. The samples are intended to test in certain areas so you can compare it to the rest of your hair products. If you did not dry your hair completely, that will increase the temperature more than 450 degrees. Also, with or without Moisture block, never use a metal flat iron, only ceramic. If Moisture Block was not distributed evenly throughout the head and there were spots that you missed, you may have been burning raw hair. We stipulate all of this in our newsletters, on our website and the information we send out via email when sending the samples.

Do not freak out! You must always make sure that Moisture Block is applied thoroughly, for your hair to be protected. Now, shampoo your hair again and condition with a heavy conditioner. I like Matrix Sleek Look Conditioner or use your favorite. Apply Moisture Block over your towel dried and conditioned hair. Then apply a gel over Moisture Block, brush and press your hair into itself. and let dry naturally. Give your hair a little rest from the flat iron for a few days.

Also, you may not have put enough on your ends and you held the flat iron too long on the ends, which can make them crinkled. Have the ends trimmed and your curl should be even. I also responded to the above e-mail he sent me. Look the product works I know this. maybe I did not put on enough as he said in his reply. Who knows but all I know is my hair is a mess now. and I've done what Victor suggested and it is still str8. Here is a copy of my reply to him. Also For those of you who have not tried this yet, Please please only do a patch test, dont make the same mistake as I did and try it on your whole head. I just read this whole thread and thought it worked for all these curlies it'll work 4 me, well hmm it did'nt if I can find a way to upload pics then Id show you what it looks like after washing 16 times literally. I want my nappy hair back. here is that e-mail. Pls understand that I blame no one but myself I should have just left the flat iron alone. I'm just so very sad at this point. Also I used a ceramic tourmaline curling iron not a metal one. and yes my hair was fully dry and not all my hair is damaged just my bangs and a patch in the back. I can't trim it becaust as I stated It is very short in a 3in afro. So I'll have to take it all off to even it back out. Oh well I guess you live and you learn. SMB is not for everyone I guess, well not for me anyways. But i can see that your product does work, If I was going to wear my hair stright all the time then I would definatly have this product as my holy grail and thats saying alot because I spend alot on hair products. I hope that you didn’t put C4CH over MB prior to flat ironing. We specify not to do that in our information. C4CH is strictly for defining curls not flat ironing. It will make the flat iron stick to your hair, which makes the iron hold in certain positions too long while trying to drag the iron through your hair.

Reggaeroots, I'm sorry this happened to your hair but after a few deep conditioning treatments it should bounce back. No need to cut your hair. Most of the other ladies have had great experience with this product so maybe this one just isn't for you since you so insist that you did everything to the tee of the provided instructions. It's impossible for us to determine what went wrong at this point. also, i can't see your pics, only a red X.

I myself have not used it to flat iron yet but I do plan on trying it. So far I've used it to lightly blow dry my hair on top of my normal leave-in and it did keep my hair soft and my blow-out looked straighter and softer than usual.

I mean he gave possible reasons for the apparent damage as far as not applying the product evenly or using an inferior styling tool, he sugested DCing and coaxing the hair to style until the straight parts bounce back...what more could he have said? What part did he miss?What other manufacturer would even take the time he takes to respond to customers?

What I was referring to was that she complains about pieces of stick straight hair among wavy hair(not resembling her natural hair) after having tried to wash it out, and his response is that maybe she didn't use enough on her ends and fried her hair making the ends crinkled, but that is NOT what she said. She complains she can't get her curls back, that the product works and works TOO WELL so well her hair will not revert to its natural state which is what she wants.

Then in the other email she clearly states that she has not tried the Cr4h or whatever it is called, and he responds that he hopes she did not use the Cr4h or whatever b4 applying the MB. That's why I felt so confused about his responses, like they weren't quite in the same conversation.

Or maybe it was I who missed the boat on everything while trying to read and chase baby around at the same time. Don't worry, I am not knocking Sabino, after all, the MB is next on my pj hitlist

I think what he was saying was that she maybe hadn't applied enough product to her hair before the hot flat iron - therefore her hair wasn't heat protected which gave her the straight ends. Damaged ends. See, I was thinking that she had used a lot and couldn't get it out.

I am sorry but, that is just plain confusing! I just don't get it. Sigh, oh well, the most important message is that you risk losing your curls if you use the product, unless we LHCF sisters, can figure out a way to help her get her curls back!!

She used too little product and burnt her hair....that's the clearer version lol.

And yes the moral is, be very very sure you have enough on to actually protect the hair....check.

I'm sorry that the pics wont show up, can anyone see them? As far as my hair goes I went to the barber shop today to have it cut and my gay friend Alex (the Barber Stylist) said " Oh no Girl I ain;t cuttin all your hair off , So you can be mad At me" so he took a strand of the stright hair off and looked at it under some magnifier he has there, it tells him if the hair is heat damaged, He told me the hair was not damaged, but it was very coated with the product, He could see some part of the hair where the product was trying to come off (due to the many washes I was doing) so he striped my hair and gave me a protien deep conditioning, trimmed the ends and it LOOKS GREAT
The curls still feels a little looser than they should be but he said with regular deep conditioning my naps should return, and I believe it.

So just to recap I did not need to bc again, Alex took care of my hair and it is looking great. I'm going to baby it from here on out, I'll still use the smb but I WILL NOT FLAT IRON again (mark my words). That's what I have been trying to say!!! It was the product itself that had made her hair so straight that she couldn't get the curls back with normal washing. Anyway Reaggeroots I am so glad Alex was able to save your hair --he sounds like a gem!

No Brooke, SMB IS for you. It’s not just for flat ironing it’s to lock in the essential moisture and conditioner. Conditioners only hold in hair 2 to 3 hours. SMB is the only product that locks them in shampoo to shampoo. Oils and other shine product leave a phony looking shine but SMB gives you shine all through the days. I use it on my hair about every other day because here in AZ the air is very dry. So instead of shampooing every day, I mist with a little water and reapply about a dime to quarter size of SMB and the shine returns for a couple of days more. Also, try this … C4CH binds the curls so they don’t separate so much. Take one of the whole sample bottles of SMB after you towel your hair and apply it evenly throughout. Then take a whole sample bottle of C4CH and apply that over SMB. Comb or brush through and the twist your hair in one to two inch round sections and let dry naturally. When your hair is dried, take a little more SMB and gently separate your larger sections by glazing SMB through each section with your fingers. Your hair should come out softer, shinier and a little bigger curl.

Many African American women use way too many layers of useless product on their hair trying to control their texture. It’s not necessary to spend that kind of money when all you need is shampoo, conditioner, SMB and/or C4CH and no other products. With SMB you can flat iron, curl iron and with C4CH with SMB you can wear your hair naturally without frizz. All of these boutique companies manufacturing “natural” products for hair are hype. The best you can do for your hair is eat the right foods and take the best supplements for your hair, skin and body. Anything on the external part of your hair, even conditioners do not last and proteins can not bond with your own hair molecules because hair is dead and a waste area, just like your skin and bowels. If you take aspirin, 4 hours later it will show up in your hair. That’s why they use hair analysis to test for drug use in courts.

Please don’t spend so much on your hair. I really like Matrix Sleek Look conditioner, Aquage Silkening Shampoo with SMB and C4CH. They will last you a long time, cut your spending down an 1/8th and you will love your hair even more.

You have beautiful hair and flat ironing is not bad for your hair if you apply SMB evenly through out your hair. I would have used a quarter size in toweled hair, put a blower on low hair and use my cool button on and off to hand dry your hair. Then I would have applied either another quarter or dime size always patting it though the ends and scrunching down to the roots and brushing after each application. Then I would have turned the flat iron up all the way. Held it for a count of 3 at the roots and pulled through the ends slowly, as short as your hair is, less than a count of 8 through the ends. I would slightly turn the flat iron on a 45 degree angle starting from the roots out to give a softer, more natural straight look. Then when finished I would have patted about less then a dime size through you hair, and glazed your hair with SMB for extra protection against humidity and brushed. The next day, it would not revert, guaranteed.

So don’t give up on us. It’s a great product. I use it everyday, all day on numerous hair textures from 4B to 2A.

That's what I have been trying to say!!! It was the product itself that had made her hair so straight that she couldn't get the curls back with normal washing. Anyway Reaggeroots I am so glad Alex was able to save your hair --he sounds like a gem!

Alex is a gem. I told him about this forum and I wanted him to check it out. He does all types of hair and is the BEST natural stylist in my area. I love him. Today I called him a HAIR GOD

Well Ladies,
Thank you for being there for me in my time of pain. I must say that Mr. Sabino was very great in his quick response to my questions, and I really do think that he was trying to help me as well as he could. I'm sorry that the pics wont show up, can anyone see them? As far as my hair goes I went to the barber shop today to have it cut and my gay friend Alex (the Barber Stylist) said " Oh no Girl I ain;t cuttin all your hair off , So you can be mad At me" so he took a strand of the stright hair off and looked at it under some magnifier he has there, it tells him if the hair is heat damaged, He told me the hair was not damaged, but it was very coated with the product, He could see some part of the hair where the product was trying to come off (due to the many washes I was doing) so he striped my hair and gave me a protien deep conditioning, trimmed the ends and it LOOKS GREAT
The curls still feels a little looser than they should be but he said with regular deep conditioning my naps should return, and I believe it.

So just to recap I did not need to bc again, Alex took care of my hair and it is looking great. I'm going to baby it from here on out, I'll still use the smb but I WILL NOT FLAT IRON again (mark my words). Funny thing, Alex wants to order the smb for his salon He said it coated my hair so well he want to start using it on his clients. Here is a pic of my hair today after my treatments. Victor sent me another e-mail today, in response to me saying smb was not for me. Some of his suggestions may be helpful to those of us who wish to just use smb without heat. Here is his email.

Ooooh these were great instructions.

I'm not part of the official challenge, but I do use SMB, and will definitely repurchase. I'm too chicken to flat iron on a consistent basis, but I did last week, used the SMB only, and my hair stayed straight in the Florida humidity. I even caught a glimpse of it in the mirror and noticed how sleek and shiny it was. My only gripe about it - and maybe I'll email Mr. Sabino myself - is that my hair stays straight and my curls still fall in the heat/humidity. I don't know if I'm using too much or what.
