I am so excited to have found you ladies! I have some questions. I see that you have typed your hair (i.e. 4b, 3, etc.) How did you come up with that? Also, I see that many of you are stretching out your perms 12 wks. How are you managing to do this? My hair starts reverting after 4wks. What should I do?

Hi shavon81 :wave::

I'll answer some of the questions, but other than looking at others hair figuring out mine is a 4a/b, I don't get that whole typing thing either:giggle:.

Stretching: I'll admit that I haven't stretched in the past. But, that's more due to the fact that I get so impatient and want to see my length than an actual inability to stretch. But, the keys to stretching are: (a) keeping the new growth moisturized and soft, (b) minimal manipulation of your fragile strands, and (c) taking good care of the demarcation line between your new growth and your relaxed hair. I take care of a and c with bi-weekly protein (with Emergencee) and weekly moisturizing steam treatments (with Humectress).

Conditioner washing: is just that.... using conditioner to wash your hair instead of shampoo. It is gentler on your hair and adds moisture.

Thanks for the reply. so you guys are actually washing your hair that many times a week???!!!!!!:spinning: I don't know if I can manage that. I don't even know to roller set my own hair. And the time :spinning:!!!! How do you take care of the demarcation line?

As far as the demarcation line goes, lots of moisturizing, deep conditioning, and mild protein treatments helped me prevent breakage. And don't feel bad about the rollersetting thing, I don't know how either. :nono: Welcome to the forums! :hiya2:

Welcome to the forum. I haven't tried stretching yet either. But i know the other women state that deep conditioning and moisturizing is key. also, it helps maintain hair length and thickness. I'm kinda new too. If you condition wash regulary remember to clarify once a month or so. Also, you don't always have to do a rollerset. There are tons of threads on different air drying styles like braidouts that look really good.

Welcome to the forum. The best advice I can give you is to read, read, read and if you are in doubt ask someone. I read a thread early this week about a newbie mixing cellophane and henna overnight, not a good idea.:nono:Anyway, please know that there is a ton of information out there but not everything, works for everyone. Happy growing chica!!!!!!!!!

i totally agree. a lot of your questions are easy to answer (like cowashing is just washing with conditioner) but others, like "why do you stretch" and "how can i find my hair type" are best answered by searching for the answers and just reading a lot. it also involves purging a lot of what you have been taught in many cases; for instance i thought that relaxing from root to tip wasn't that bad and they only asked me if i wanted a DC at a salon just to get more money. look for the threads by other noobs as they are really helpful; anything labeled "do's and dont's" will probably also be helpful. but welcome...enjoy your stay...dont get too addicted...lol

Clarifying is basically getting rid of build-up on the hair; there are lots of clarifying shampoos out there to try as well as "non-traditional" clarifiers (such as baking soda & water; or apple cider vinegar);

Also for conditioner washes (co-washing) just invest in a cheap conditioner like suave or V05; lot's of the ladies rely on those and they are only about 88 cents a bottle;

for deep conditioners, it's a little different; you kind of have to do trial & error; I was fond of organics hair mayonaisse, but they switched the packaging and I was'nt too fond of the price so I switched to elasta qp-dpr and I honestly don't like it; so my search is still on for a good deep conditioner;

this is a trial and error phase; you just have to listen to your hair and learn what works for you. Hope that helps!
