When to use Aloe Vera gel?

Is it pure aloe vera gel?

I use it in my daily spritz along with a little glycerin and water for moisture. I also will sometimes, if I'm wearing my hair out, smooth some on after I put in my leave in for a very soft hold. And if I'm wearing twists, it feels really cool and light on an itchy scalp.

I've only used it as a light moisturizer or gel and as part of my home-made spritz. I am careful with using it alone though, cuz it has protein, which I wasn't aware of at first (I though it was strictly a moisturizer) and I use to just put it on my hair *straight* as a gel and it made my hair hard over time so I had to start "mixing it up" -- it is good stuff to, especially when mixed with glycerin and topped with oils . . . :yep:

I agree with this. I love to put in peppermint or rosemary :yep: and sometimes a little grapeseed.

Oh, this is news to me too. I was using it on my hairline thinking it should be doing me some good but my hair got drier and drier. I think this has contributed to my hairline breakage.

what is the name of the aloe vera gel that everyone has been raving about? I think it starts with an F

I purchased the aloe vera gel from Wally World. I must be alone because it makes my hair so dry. I tried mixing with glycerin and conditioner, but my hair still says NO.

Try Lilly of the Desert. I have to keep it in the refrigerator, but the difference is amazing.

No you're not alone. Thats what some of us have just commented on. Neroli says it contains protein which i didn't realise.

I don't think it's just the protein in aloe vera that makes people's hair hard, but some of the chemicals in it. Most say 90-something percent pure but the chemicals can be drying.... Fruit of the Earth is one of the ones with some drying chemicals but I think it works okay when diluted well. JASON brand is one a lhcf'er recommended and I like it more. But I'd imagine most health food store brands are good.

I did not know that aloe vera gel was a protein! Makes sense why my hair loves it... I have been woefully lacking any protein. When I stopped using it for a bit, my hair started breaking much more easily. Once I started using it again, my hair is like :love3: :love4: :clapping: :yay:

I use the kind from Puritan's Pride, which is meant to be consumed as a drink. I also use it mixed with a little oil. Sometimes melted coconut oil, sometimes tea tree oil. I like to use the tea tree oil on my cornrows underneath my sew-in, just as a preventative measure. I've heard some people's hair gets mildew under there! :barf:

OK I'm confused...does PURE aloe vera gel have protein or the ones with additives. The ones with additives do make my hair dry, but not the pure.

I use it daily on my hair and my scalp. I do not use the skincare av, but the food grade only. I have never used anything for six months straight, but I have used food grade aloe vera gel and juice/drink for over six months now and my hair thinks it is the best thing since sliced bread -- and my scalp. When I used the skincare stuff, it made my hair hard and tacky. The food grade stuff (I also take three ounces a day internally) is what both my hair and scalp love. I have it in my moisture spritz (sometimes I add the juice, sometimes it is the gel); my scalp concoction (gel only) and I add the gel to both my conditioner and my creamy leave-in. I keep the juice/drink in the frig, but not the gel although the gel says to refrigerate after opening, but I don't and one bottle kept nearly three months in my bathroom without refrigeration.
