I am from the school of "No-need to-add-lemon, lime-or-any-acid-to-get-great-color-release."

For the most part it adding lemon juice is very drying to our hair unless your moisture level is off the chain.

Keep your mixes simple sans the acid; use more oil or conditioner if anything.

I had to learn the hard way. :yep:

my hair get red tint with no lemon added...

I mix henna, glycerin & hot water...sometimes a lil oil ( coconut, vatika, castor or whatever is in hand's reach)

I highly doubt there would be difference between lime and lemon. I don't add either to my henna mix. The acids dry my hair out. I just use a mix of henna, hot water and a bit of conditioner.

Tell 'em Cichelle! I have been trying to tell the ladies to leave that lemon/lime/orange juice/acv alone.... :nono:

It's supposed to be red. That's the color that henna renders. The use of lemon is only for a quicker release of color.

I've found that henna I've used releases quickly anyway without any acid.

agreeing with ya ( we've discussed this before)

I dont think the lemon makes the color release any quicker... I dont even let my Henna mix sit long enough for the hot water to cool off...

Yeah, I've been using less and less acid each time, but I am gonna try it with no acid next time. How hot should the water be? I read somewhere that if you use boiling water it can "kill" the dye. True?

every Henna Ive used recommended boiling water.... I assumed the heat helped activate the color and/or conditioner ( I may have even read that somewhere but its been so long since Ive read directions on a pkg of henna)

No hot hot or boiling water needed! Warm water right out the tap is fine. Heat does no special thing for color or color release. It's after you mix and place in a warm area (on the kitchen countertop is fine) where the chemical reaction takes place.

ETA: My henna mix has released great color in as little as 1-2 hours without anything but water (no oil, conditoner, nada) even though longer time is recommended.

I don't use any kind of acid in my henna usually too drying. Just tap water is fine, i've never used hot or boiling water.

I add a couple tablespoons of orange juice to my henna and water. I've never had dry hair afterward.

I just hennaed.... water from the tap + henna, let it sit for about 12 hrs, only because I mixed it before I went to work. Add aloe vera oil and amla. I don't add any type of acid. I used to use tea/coffee but then I got lazy.

Ditto....adding the acid is asking for trouble!
