I've been thinking about cosmetology school

I'm due to graduate in spring 09 with a Bsc in hotel and restaurant management. I currently work with the hotel company or my dreams however I don't want to spend my life working for some company. I want to put my time energy, sweat and tears into something that is MINE.

I want to open up a salon but I also want to be a licensed cosmetologist. I visited the Aveda institute 2 weeks ago and I was told that it's a 12month fulltime course and it costs 15k. I wanted to do it part time while I continue to work at a hotel but I was told that it can't be done part time.

This is something I really want to do but I can't afford to fork out 15k and the not be able to earn for a whole yr.

Do you absolutely have to go to Aveda? I would check out some other schools in your area. Beauty school is only going to teach you the basics anyway so I really don't think it matters which one you go to as long as they teach you the proper way to do the basics.

nope I don't absolutely have to go to aveda....that's just the only one I've had time to visit so far. There is John Jay which is closer to where I live and they cost 8400 for the course. I went there to get my hair straightened not too long ago but it was a saturday so I didn't do the tour and find out their options.

I am currently in the process of finishing up cosmetology school to acquire my license although I have been doing hair for well over ten yrs. I too went part-time and let me tell you, it is crucial. It takes forever and it can be tiresome. I had to leave because I had surgery early this yr and I have to wait for the class I need to come around again before I can even go back.

You need to be sure it is something that you want to do because a good program is around 15000. But that includes all of your suppplies and study materials. For 8400 is fine but you will probably be paying for all of your books and equipment which will make up the difference in price.

If you are married and have children, its even harder to work and go to school part time. An evening program will be four hrs, from about 6-10pm every night. I have seen many of my classmates drop out because of this. Then you will deal with a lot of immaturity from younger classmates and even some unprofessional staff.

I'm not trying to be negative or discourage you. If you want to do it, I say go for it. But it's nothing like the University/College atmosphere. It can seem very high school at times. But I want my license so that I can go back and work in a high-end salon and then open my own salon/spa. So it was worth the sacrifice for me.

In some states, you don't even have to complete beauty school. Instead, you can do an apprenticeship in a salon and then take the test.

Im starting Empire Beauty School is August. It cost about 19k but the KIT is ridiculous and you can go part time (2 years). Im getting financial aid to assist with the cost. I have no choice but to be successful when I finish because I have to pay all these dang loans back, since Im still paying for my BS in Criminal Justice and BA in English!!!!

Thanks for your input. It is something I really want to do. However I don't want to work for anybody. I wanna open up my place. Maybe I can put the course on hold in the initial process and just hire or rent chairs to licensed stylist...then get my license. I'm just trying to see what options I have.

The way I see it is that if u already know how to do the basics, why take basic courses? do what u have to to get a basic liscense if u wanna open ur own salon, then spend the money that u would've spent on a beauty program to take some more advanced classes here and there, ie, fusion weave applications, advanced coloring and highlighting techniques, malaysian weave, up to date hair cutting techniques etc.

oh I didn't know I could do that....where do you think I'll be able to take those classes?

I had been toying with the idea of attending Empire. When I really gave it some thought I realized I didn't love hair that much to be shelling out that kind of money, just wanted to do it as guaranteed income/extra income. I never wanted to get into a lot of debt before I found "it" (what I really want to do), but it looks like I will be finishing up this BA then figuring out how to become an esthetician.

I'd sure like know more about the apprenticeship-to-license route. I don't have the dinero after a BA and now, an MA but I do love hair! I'm gonna start trying to perfect a weaving technique, to see if I can hustle it on the side.
