....But made me look so good!

Edited: I don't know why people keep bumping up this one and not my "Baking Soda Bombshell" Thread in which I've posted how to do this safely, my good and bad experience, formula ratios to try, trouble shooting, pros and cons, and baking sodas other uses. However, I suggest reading all of this and more in great detail in my drugstore album. See my fotki for more! From my mane to yours, happy hair growing!

Update: 11.01.09: My tutorial can be found at my blog.

That's a lot of baking soda [that] you used, hon. Even in my largest mixes, I only add 2 tbsps of baking soda. Happy your hair came out nicely though.

....But made me look so good!

Last night, on an insane whim I decided to mix 1/3 of conditioner with 3/4 a cup baking soda, slather it on my head and go to bed.:spinning:

Five hours later I woke up with a scalp on fire. It didn't just burn, there was a horrible, unholy ache that brought tears to my eyes and I prayed my hair wouldn't fall out. I was in agony as I tried to wash it out as gently as possible. :wallbash:

Even after it was out my scalp raged, bured, ached, itched, and just HURT. :wallbash:

I immediately put in a DC and left it in the next 5 hours. I washed it out...my scalp felt better-ish. Still sore, but (most) of the burning and mind-numbing ache was gone.

Fast forward five hours to now and it still aches and makes me cringe when I apply pressue to it.

Aside from these horrors...it totally texturized my hair. It looked so fantastic I didn't know what to do with myself, while running errands today.

I'm serious.

I about passed out when I saw it in natual light. Such succulent lovely little ringlets.

Disclaimer: I already have little ringlets no matter what I do, but these were with 50% less frizz and were "fatter" some how! My 4" TWA still shrank down to an inch...but it was a good looking inch.:lachen:

I'm know, I know my dears -I used a ton of baking soda.

In hindsight it probably exfoliated my scalp as I tossed and turned, over and over, until it was over exfoliated. The heat from my body trapped by the shower cap didn't help it feel any better.:nono:

It DID however change my texture noticibly, but not enough to take me from 4a to 3c. I may try this again...with...say TWO TABLESPOONS of baking soda in 1/2 a cup of condish. :ohwell: And I won't sleep on it.

Still...baking soda does significantly change hair texture. :yep:

Just don't go wool-raving-mad like this little lamb did and use too much.

My poor, poor scalp...!

...

But HOT DARN I look good!:lachen::lachen::lachen:

(No...I have no pics. My webcam hates me. )

Baking soda is a very alkaline substance dear, but I'm glad it looks good :look::lachen:

DO NOT. i repeat, DO NOT leave baking soda in your hair undiluted for long amounts of time. I use a baking soda paste on my face daily and i mix it in a coloring bowl i got at sallys and it eats the paint off the bowl when i leave it in their for a day or two. It is very caustic, and harsh. It's even used with ACV to clear the drains! Just don't do it please! :antlers:

I'm glad your scalp is okay and your hair turned out the way you wanted it to. I will not be trying this method:look:

OK, so tomorrow I was going to try and make my own baking soda based texturizer thingy :perplexed !
Now I'm not so sure :look:.

Don't let my zeal stop you. I just used a lot and left it on too long.

I just used too much for too long. Use it in moderation. I'll do it again, but in much smaller portions and if not for a shorter length of time...not while asleep.

Yeah I bought baking soda thinking I was going to do this...but burning? No way.

I used a lot. I just wanted to see if it REALLY could do anything and figured if 3/4 a cup didn't do it...nothing would. :lachen:

I would have been fine if I hadn't slept in it. I sleep VERY wildly and my tossing and turning caused it to scrub my scalp. I use baking soda to exfoliate, but never thought that the friction caused while I slept would do the same. One of those little details.

I may try a large concentration again, in the future...just for lesser time, or again -with no manipulation/pressure.

Don't fear The Soda!:lachen:

Wow! I'm sorry to hear about this. I'm glad you're okay. Thanks for the warning about baking soda.

I love my baking soda...I mix about 2 teaspoons with WEN and water in an 8oz color applicator bottle and apply directly to my scalp. My hair loves this treat!!! I've also notice that BS washing helps with stretching relaxers. :yep:

... giiiiiiirrll! LMAO Tell me why .. I am NOT lying, I just put a baking soda/cheapie conditioney mix into my hair to try as a baggy method over night... now you're giving me 2nd thoughts... ... ... should I wash out? Go to sleep and wash out tomorrow? OH THE CONFUSION! .. *cough* but I do wannna see the results *ahem* excuse me =) :look:

Ditto to this whole statement. I am shocked that you still have hair.

Ditto. I am shocked you still have hair sleeping in it and all...please please please be careful! It is a chemical.

DITTO, I use this stuff full strength to clean my glass top stove. It truly did eat your scalp!:perplexed

Please be careful.

I will...though its not THAT strong. It can only do SO much with a pH of 9. I knew that before using such a large amount. If it had a pH of more than 9 I wouldn't put it on my hair. Not that a pH of 9 or so is anything to blow air at!

I posted this as a cautionary tale of sorts. Though mainly as proof of its effectiveness. Relaxers are at 13 and up on the pH scale. Baking soda is a 9. While that's 100 times more alkaline than blood which hovers close to a neutral 7.
I appreciate the concern! :yep:

That's a sad, happy & funny story. i'm just glad your hair didn't fall out!

You and me both. :lachen:

I couldn't help but laugh at the horrifying subject matter with the smiley face next to it.:lachen:

I'm glad it gave you good results and that the damage wasn't too bad on your scalp. :) A lesson learned! I didn't know baking soda was so harsh!

This may have already been mentioned but baking soda is the most alkaline substance--14.0 on the pH scale. Relaxers are between 8.4 and 14, highly alkaline in order to straighten hair. Pain always means something has gone wrong. It's a good thing you washed it out when you did. It's good that it resulted in hair that you lilke.

lol after you told me not to sleep with it in, you go and do it yourself :look::grin: lol. Your scalp will be okay after awhile, but I'm happy it worked on your hair lol. I'm going to try it for a while longer during the day. I did it for 1 hour and it had nice results, not a dramatic change, but nice...

LOL! Rub it in why don't you? I'm glad it worked well for you!

Baking soda has a ph of 8.3.

At least according to my current Chem proff, chemistry textbook, and the chem teachers I had in high school.

Blood is around 7. Nair/Draino/Relaxer hit the 12-14 mark. Based on brand of course.
