to making those curls defined.

(I (personally) would like to hear from those of you who are 4a - if I had to put a type on it :))

I saw the video that LadyLibra did and it was great! and I keep reading about this Denman brush, but doesn't brusing frizz the curls???

And many of you say that you are using just conditioner and squeezing out the excess. How much conditioner are you using???

Does combing with a wide tooth comb give the same results as the Denman?

:confused::confused::confused::confused:

If you have step-by-step tutorials/ guides to what you do to make your hair have that "curly" look, PLEASE post it.

Great question...I would love to know too...my daughter is natural and I don't know what I'm doing...

I don't use the denman except to detangle - it makes the curls pop in the back of my head and on the side but the crown/front just gets terribly frizzy. My daily regimen is:

1) Co-wash with HE LTR rinse. Detangle with my fingers.
2) Put some VS So Sexy Moisturizing Condish (I love the way it smells and it's nice and thick) and squeeze out the excess. I use enough to fill the dip in the palm of my hand. I focus on the ends since they are a mess.
3) Bath LOL
4) I get out of the shower and put some Sabino Moisture Block and then plop with a t-shirt. I stole this whole reggie from Lady Libras video (thanks LL).

That's it...I'll get dressed. I put my makeup on in the bathroom after I hop out of the shower. When that is done I remove the towel and fluff or whatever. No fuss - no muss. I do this 3-4 times a week.

On wash days I use the denman to get rid of the shed hairs. I'll also shampoo and DC on that day.

ETA: The curls happen on their own when you leave the hair alone IMO. Not too much manipulation and the hair will settle into it's curl pattern. That's what has worked for me. It takes a few weeks to see anything going on.

I'm not a "4a" but I will post anyways....

1. wash my hair with either Herbel Essence Totally Twisted or HE Hello Hydration
2. Rinse out conditioner
3. Gently pat hair down with a towel, being carefule not to disturbe my hair
4. Spray a liberal amount of Elasta QP H2 leave-in conditioner
5. Smooth leave-in in a backwards motion (this decreases frizz)
6. Apply some creamy leave-in moisturizer
7. Melt a quarter size amount of raw shea butter in my hand and apply to hair (this give a shiny very soft hold)

I think I will make a video and post it...:look:

ETA: the key to smooth curls is to not disturb the hair too much before it dries. It's very important to be very gentle when smoothing and applying products to your hair.

hm. but how do you get the curls to "clump" together? is there a technique to this?

:yep: mm-hmm, you should make a video ;)

Moisture...and leaving them alone. When I first apply product they are very seperated. As the day goes on they start to clump more. When I go a couple of days without washing I get major clumpage...(yes I made that up..:lachen:)

Also, I think the smoothing that I do helps them to clump better.

hey DenverGirl!

for some people, brushing always equals frizz no matter what. for a lot of us though, if you brush while your hair is wet or saturated with product, brushing actually makes the hair clump together. :yep:

i smother my hair in conditioner. in my vid you see i have the bottle close at hand, that wasn't just for video purposes. i will add more conditioner if i feel i need more "slip" while detangling.

i don't feel combs give as much clumping power as the Denman. although brushing can cause more shrinkage too, so it's a trade-off.

and i hear you loud and clear, i need to make a vid. :lachen: ladykaypnyc has a few on brushing in products that promote curl pattern though, if you want something right now. :yep:

I don't have any tutorials but I do the "shake it like a wet dog" in the shower with conditioner as a leave in. I let my hair drip/air dry.

I found that when I first BC'd I wasn't able to achieve the curly look until I grew more length.

My hair looked totally different at 2inches vs 4 inches.

My Cap n' Go method gives me great curls without doing anything every day. It's in the journal section of my Fotki.

No. The brush doesn't cause frizz because it really works like a comb. If that makes sense. I don't use a lot of conditioner. I just smooth some on in 4 sections. Then I do the same with my gel. I use the denman in the shower to detangle before I add my products.

thanks ladies for popping in and sharing!!

i would like to hear about more regimens to making your curls/coils/waves look moist and juicy all day long...

tia!

I'm 4a and I do a ariety of things that makes my curls more defined when I'm going for that look. Here are a few:

-After cowashing with my VS so sexy conditioner I put my leave in and Miss Jessie's Curly Meringue on soaking wet hair (I do not towel dry before this, hair is dripping wet) and massage products into my hair. After that I dab my hair with a towel massaging with fingers as I dab. I usually get very defined curls from this method.
(you can substitute IC gel or any other curl defining product for the curly meringue)

-When my hair is dry I spray with water and leave-in then add some cocunut oil and/or moisturizer

-twist outs also define my curls more :)

i like your twa. my hair is the same length. i'm a 4a/4b also. was wondering do you have a regimen? didn't see on in your fotki.

What I do is cowash by just rinsing really well and comb out if needed with a denman and a little conditioner.
Then I smother it in more conditioner, smooth in some oil, and smooth and scrunch in some gel.
Give it a shake and let it dry in the sun or with a diffuser.

If you really want the curls to POP do a honey rinse. 1cup of water with a tablespoon of honey poured over the hair when done detangling.

nothing. :look: my hair does what it wants. I guess that's why it looks any old kinda way. I need to do more.
