Ladies, lets talk ENDS! Share what you are doing to keep them strong, healthy, and moisturized.

CWing and DCing? Daily upkeep/styling? Products? Frequency of dusting/trims? Baggying? Any and everything else? Share!

Let's see...here are my TOP 5:

1) I moisturize my ends 2 X per day (with a mix of coconut oil and water) and wear "damp" buns almost daily, which has really improved/thickened my ends.

2) When I do wear my hair down, I try to wear tops without collars and made of smooth fabric to avoid snagging.

3) I am extremely gentle with my hair during detangling and/or when my hair is wet.

4) To protect from relaxer run-off during the touchup process, I coat my ends with so much oil that it's kinda dripping off. (This may be excessive, but it makes me feel better.:look:)

5) My hair is ALWAYS protected at bedtime, with a silk scarf and bonnet.

I c/o wash daily and I know that's keeping my ends (and the rest of my hair) moisturized. I also don't put much direct heat on my ends at all, ( I airdry most of the time), I wear wet/damp buns most days but I put a good helping of "grease" on my ends to hold the moisture of the c/o in.

I co wash daily so my hair is constantly wet and in a bun, that way my ends stay moisturized. I rarely use heat (3 x's a year) and I coat my ends with oil or conditioner before relaxing

When it starts to get cooler, I lay off the co washes. And since my hair isn't constantly wet, I baggy overnight and wear protective styles every day.

I only trim/dust when my ends start snagging and tangling

I moisturie at least once daily with my fav-Cantu shea butter leavein repair cream:thumbsup:

I wear protective styles 90% of the time and spray my ends with Dove replenishing mist

ALWAYS wear my satin cap whenever I lay down for sleep or whatever.

Avoid wearing fabrics that snag my hair when its down.

1. Optimal conditioning is key to great hair....from roots to tips....

2. Avoid teeny weeny twists, and other tangly hair styles.....

3. Rubbing ends with olive, sunflower, or other linoelic ( high in efa's) will dramatically cut down on snags and knots

4. before a final rinse.... dunk your ends in icy cold distilled water.....

5. Wear hair UP most of the time.

I regularly wash my ends with baking soda. Keeps them nice and smooth and free of product build up.

I started doing this after I saw a post about the fact that we apply so much product on our ends during the week and fail to ever wash it off! We let the suds get downt there on their own. After a while ends start to feel crunchy.

1.) Co-wash daily. Moisturize and seal with grease.
2.) Put my hair in a low pony and do the tuck bun, rolling it as many times as possible [I look kinda .. bald, but oh well.] to preserve the moisture.
3.) Weekly DC's.
4.) I basically go through 2 bottles of VO5 a week. Since I use it as a leave-in too.
5.) Haven't used heat in a while either.

~deep conditioning, putting extra conditioner on the ends
~No direct heat, only indirect heat from my hooded dryer
~moisturizing daily
~frequent dusting--I hate scraggly-looking ends:nono: Im a fan of blunt ends:yep:

Moisture, Moisture, and more moisture. I alternate b/n conditioner, DC, profectiv, length and strength leave in, castor oil, sebastians potion #9 on my ends twice a day. This has eliminated my need for trims greatly. I baby my ends, don't comb, dont brush and use protective styling often. It really works.

Hair Zing everyday, but I use a growth aid on my edges. I pin the back of my hair into the accessory, so its like bunning.

Moisturizers that I can still use on straightened hair. I really love Komaza Care Shea Lotion and Qhemet AOHC or BR in the winter. Qhemet Biologics Coconut Detangler in the summer. Also, Long Lovely Locks Sunflower Butter and Buttercream are nice... but expensive.

Co-washing.

ApHogee Green Tea & Keratin Spray.

Deep conditioner 3 times a week. The treatment I use now cannot be used for longer than 25 mins.

STRONG protein treatments.

my efforts are relatively recent - i have been baggying with bb lotion and castor oil for the last 5 days now and already my ends feel so much smoother and look a lot thicker. i have also been bunning everyday for about a week to protect those things. i hate my relaxed ends but i am going to hold onto them at least until august.

  • applying additional conditoner & oil before airdrying
  • moisturizing w/VO5 Strawberries & Cream or Trader Joe's Nourish Spa conditoners
  • Qhemet's Amla & Olive Heavy Cream or Nexxus Headress for extra TLC
  • bunning at home
  • never comb dry ends
  • no direct heat on ends

:bump:
This was my question for the day too! Keep the suggestions coming! Thanks OP and thanks for the tips ladies.

I moisturize and seal with jojoba oil daily (at night before wrapping). I also try to wear my hair up most of the day so its not prone to snagging or just drying out in the elements.

I will do S&D when I see splits or breakage...

1. BAGGY- I keep my ends baggied as much as possible. When I am wearing a pony I baggy under the phonypony. Or I baggy overnight.
2. COWASHING- I cowash as often as possible
3. DC- I concentrate the conditioner on the ends.
4. TRIMS- I trim only when needed
5. BRAIDS- I wear braids often and add conditioner to the ends every other day.

Deep conditioning{new love ALTER EGO!} every shampoo then ORS olive oil or BB castor cream-sometimes both, coconut oil to seal..my hair is 99% of the time in 2-6 single braids beneath my wigs. Rarely baggy anymore-my hair doesn't like it right now.

I've just now started wearing my hair down again after wearing it in buns and ponies for almost a year straight.

I also moisturize and seal with castor oil. I add more condish and concentrate on babying my ends.

I wear a scarf every night. Thanks to these simple methods I haven't trimmed in a little over a year and I've dusted literally a few strands twice since April of 2007.

I use Tigi Ego Boost Split End Mender every time I was my hair. (LOVE this stuff!) I just massage a little into my ends while my hair is damp and that's it! I haven't trimmed or even dusted my hair since August 2006 and haven't had any problems with end splittage or breakage.

I'm gonna research this product.

cowashed, moisturized with a leave in, then Jamiacan Black Castor oil on the last 1/2 inch.

Every day! :yep:

Castor oil was a huge staple in my house growing up. Haitians use castor oil for EVERYTHING.

Something about baking soda to me sounds like it may make the hair dry. Tell me, what is the water to baking soda ratio? Is this better than using clarifying or chelating shampoo?

This is soooooo true!!!! I need to pay more attention to that.

Good Thread.....I am noticing at times that my ends get dry and keeping them consistently moisturized has been a challenge for me.
And yes LadyEsquire Baking Soda is drying for the hair:perplexed

  • CW 2x a week
  • DC at least once a week
  • concentrate leave-in and/or oils on ends
  • coat hair before relaxer
  • Baggy sometimes under a phony pony or overnight (but since I concentrate leave-in or oil on my ends, I don't need to do this much)
I started doing this after samanthajones recommended I rub some oil on my ends after my last relaxer. I tried to do this a lot more this time and I can really tell a difference in my ends. My stylist didn't even need to cut my ends this time and said that they look great.

Bumping..... My ends have been feeling dry lately. They aren't split, just dry. :( Trying to save them and give them some much needed moisture so they DON'T split.

I was thinking of baggying w/ my Mizani Overnite Treatment for a week or so. I dunno.

The TIGI Split End Mender sounds interesting.

Just rambling..... having a 'concerned hair' day.

ETA: I just put a lil V05 on my ends and sealed w/ some shea butter (from my 'at work hair kit'). They feel ALOT better.

Gosh LadyE, I was going to start this thread today as it was on my mind. I beleive that at the end of the day, healthy ends=growth retention.

I try to keep my ends as straight as possible. When I bantu my hair into to knots at the back of my hair under my wig, the last three inches are flat against the knot. When I undo, they are practically as straight as natural hair straight can get.

When I wash with baking soda, I concentrate on ends too to remove build up and over time to loosen the curl more in this area.

I moisturize about once every other day and keep a baggy over my bantus under my wig all week.

I still have a little barbed wire going on down there, but heay, it beat a year ago. Much improvement. I will continue dilligently.

Me too. I hid my hair for almost 2 years. Now I want to enjoy my hair, so I only protect at home.

I have not trimmed regularly either, except for light dusting after relaxers, but now I am thinking I will let it be until I get to my desired length or only when needed, which ever comes first.

Me too. And I just became confident enough in my maintenance skills to wear it down, without feeling guilty that I was damaging my ends.
