Transitioners and Naturals have you ever considered...

No, I never thought about it. I just slick my edges back with castor oil or gel and water. My goal is for my hair to be completely natural...edges and all.

4-GET IT!
I was sick and tired of relaxers chewing up my hairline which is part of the reason why I am transitioning.
I am now starting to get the fullness back.
I want to be 100% natural by the end of my transition and I'll just stick with the gel/water/scarf/whatever else methods thankyaverymuch!
I think you get my point :look:.

Perming the edges/outer perimeter of your hair to improve the look of buns and other transitioning hairstyles that display your hairline?

Nope, I don't think that would be an improvement. Straight edges and 95% nappy hair? :nono: I dislike the slicked back look, anyway. Good thing my hair doesn't do it (easily?, at all?) anyway.

^^ITA Mwedzi. I'm confused on how that would look more professional. To me it would look worse. Your hair in the front may be lying down str8, but the naps underneath would pop back up. I just don;t get how this would work. Search for the scarf method and try that first. :yep:

That would be a no for me.

Although I must be honest and say when I first started going natural it crossed my mind more than once.

Then I realized what was the point in do this if I truly wanted to be natural?

Then I had to sit down with myself (I typed exactly what I meant ) and figure out what was the real issue with wanting to make this choice.

So me, myself and I (again, I typed exactly what I meant )discussed it and determined that I needed to change my mindset about my hair and my attitude towards it.

Once I did that life was much better. I also let my hair dictate to me what I could and could not do to it being natural. So then and there I said bye bye to slick back edges knowing that they would be a thing of the past and embrace whatever was coming my way in hair texture for my edges.

:yep:

I am mscocoface and I approve of this message. :lachen:

NOPE!!!! :nono: Girl Fantasia IC thick and shine gel. Use an old tooth brush to apply the gel on the edges...it works for me everytime!

That's texturizing/texlaxing. I've done that for years - never been relaxed straight - and am now transitioning to natural.

Nope, never thought about it.
I don’t mind a bit of frizz here and there, but no way would I resort to chemicals just to tame it down.
My hairline/edges lays down pretty well with water, gel, a toothbrush and a scarf.

No, because I don't see how straight hair would improve the look of my naps.

mmm... Agreed!
I just used a little water, an oil based moisterizer, my denmen brush then tie it with a scarf until I get to where ever I am going... works great and leaves my hair soft!

Nope. In the the early stages of my transition, my edges were starting to irk me. But as time went along and I got more natural hair, it's like the edges eventually looked okay. I think the contrast of the edges with a lot of relaxed hair still close to it makes it look worse than it is. When there's more natural hair, it doesn't look so "crunchy", because the relaxed ends aren't right next to the edges anymore.

This is exactly what I do everyday, except for the brush part and it works great!
My edges could'nt be smoother!

Yes, water + moisturizer + scarf is the way to go for those unruly hairs.

When I wear my hair down/out I kinda like the way my fuzzies look. That is part of what makes the hair look natural to me :)

dont you think that would defeat the purpose of being natural/transitioning?

look at it like this: once you relax the hair, when you are/become natural. then you will always have a patch or chemically treated hair. doesnt that defeat the purpose????

Ditto! I had agirl I wen to school with who used to do this, b/c she was always in straight weaves. I told her it was like a relaitonship and she just wanted all the love and benefit w/out the commitment.:look::rolleyes:

Someone suggested I try this because I wasnt blending my falls well with my natural hair. I could flat iron but that seems more damaging. Its probaby a slippery slope.....

I permed the front of my hair line the first 6 months that I went natural because I was wearing sew-ins. I dint want the hair that I left out to get puffy when the rest of the hair stayed straight. Once I took the sew-in out, it was hard to balance the 2 textures.

If you do this, it is best to make sure you don't go too deep past your hair line and don't leave the perm on to long. Another better option is to get a formaldehyde free keratin treatment.

haleeeeee naw...1.) why? 2.) i know if i did it that hair would just jump ship and fall right off my head or break...my edges/front always sucked when i was relaxed, 3.) u dont need a relaxer to slick your hair down... after i cowash i push a goody ouchless band back and tie the front of my hair down with a scarf...i ususally use ecostyler or something for hold on my edges/front, whick slicks it down with a nice wave, but i forgot one time and just put the scarf on with no product...later when i took my scarf off, the front of my puff was relaxer straight and soft

I used to texturize and my hair kept curly, but without the volume and frizz, so everybody thought it was my natural hair. Maybe that could be a better option for you.
My hair was dull, thinner and I had breakage though, so I neved passed shoulder to armpit length. It was also sort of unpredictable in terms of styling if I wanted to wear my hair down.

You can also tame your frizz by using natural mucillages (homemade flaxseed gel, which is boiled and strained flax seeds)or a gel, on dry or wet hair, and sleeping with a satin scarf makes a difference. Adding some conditioner on dry hair does the trick as well.

my edges ... yes, but that was when i was still transitioning and wanted to keep wearing STRAIGHT weaves lol. I eventually just decided to BC, but because of the heat that i applied to my hair while in those weaves my hairs kinda tougher in the front then the back & middle which is really soft and fluffy in comparison. If it's heat damage then i guess i can just wait until it grows out and cut it again but if it's just a completely different texture in the front then in the back & middle then ill just deal with it but relaxing my edges just a wee bit just to match the rest of my hair is an option that i wouldn't totally rule out.

is that bad ? lol i don't I'd ever REALLY do it but .. hmmm idk

I'm confused...when you relax your edges...Oh, nevermind :perplexed: NO-I've NEVER thought about that...

I don't see how this makes sense...if you relax your edges, won't you have to keep relaxing them if you want to continue to make them smooth as your hair grows? So there would be looser hair all around the perimeter right?

Nope. Nothing a little IC Fantasia gel and a scarf can't solve. My hair slicks down pretty easy. And when it's being difficult, you can always throw on a thick stretchy headband.
