Relaxed heads: Don't sleep on putting a little condish back in after you cowash

I know many naturals do this. But being a relaxed head, I usually grab for a standard leave-in after I cowash. But this morning at the gym, I decided to put a little of my Suave condish back in my hair.

I was surprised at how soft and slippery my hair was, but it wasn't too much slip at all.

I twisted my hair and pinned it in the back, put my little scarf on my head and hopped on the train. When I got to work, I felt my hair and was surprised at how soft it felt.

It's drying nicely, my hair is soft and my strands are happy! It's not slopping all over the place and is holding its form in my twisted up bun quite nicely.

Just wanted to pass this along for those that may not know. I may be grabbing for my NTM leave-in less now :yep:

PS This is also great b/c this can be quite inexpensive. A 22 oz. bottle of Suave condish costs me $1.50.
A (what is it 8?) oz. bottle of NTM leave in is $6

So I will try to supplement the product and keep more money in my pocket when I can.

I made a thread about this very thing a few weeks ago and I co-sign with this! This is one of the best things that I could have done for my relaxed hair. I use HE Hello Hydration as a leave in after my co-wash cuz it's so thick and smells yummy. My hair is soft like cotton and smells so good!

I'm glad this works for you! I'm amazed that I keep finding out little common sense things that my hair appreciates so much. And I am so grateful for this board b/c before I came here, I didn't even know it was OK to leave condish in your hair at all!

Oh, and this helps TREMENDOUSLY with STRETCHING! I am 12 weeks post and can barely see my new growth cuz it's so soft. NO breakage whatsover.

Yep, I would have never thought to use regular condtioner as a leave in. MY HE Hello Hydration has a coconut scent, then I slather on coconut oil on top of that after it dries in the morning. My hair be blinging all day long!

That's good to know too! This is only my third time stretching, but I had to look at the calendar to realize I was 7 weeks post!

B/f this board, I used to be miserable at 5 weeks. My perception of my natural hair texture has changed so much, now that I give it the moisture it needs, it's real soft and my coils be poppin'!

I love to do this when I sport my wash n gos, I normally use Hello Hydration too. I do keep my normal leave ins around for when I rollerset though :look:

Oh yeah, I go to town when I rollerset and make sure I use the product that brings styling/hair happiness results.

But most of the time, my hair is in a wet set or a bun. So, my usage of products like NTM, Silicon Mix leave-in and Lacio Lacio will slow down dramatically now.

I used to do this with wash n gos.

I jsust started doing it with baridouts. I some mane n tail conditioner and detangler on each section. It has made my hair healthy , soft and shiny.

Yep, where my new growth is, there is only waves, the only time I'm aware of how many weeks post I am is after my workout, other than that, you could not look at my hair and tell that it's been 3 months since my last touch-up. I am stretching to 4 months, but I know I could easily stretch to six months with NO breakage, thanks to this method along with daily co-washing.

Wow, that's cool. My new growth is quite coily with little spirals twisting my relaxed hair, so I can definitely tell a difference between my two textures. But the coils lay down so nicely and they're really soft.

If I don't keep my NG and relaxed hair moisturized, the NG will tangle my relaxed hair, and that's when the problems start!

Shoot, you might as well transition if your'e at 3 months and can't tell a difference between the two textures, lol!

I totally agree! I DC with Keracare Humecto in the tub and after cwing and rinsing thoroughly I use Keracare Humecto in the bottle to add conditioner back into my hair. I then pin up and airdry in a silk scarf. It leaves my hair so soft and smooth. I rinse daily and DC/CW every 3 days because I really sweat during my workouts so I just add in the conditioner after my daily rinse and my hair is so soft and so easy to detangle. I am 8 weeks post and have tons of ng but this is the easiest it has ever been to manage. I am a 4BZZZZ by the way. I am hoping to stretch to 14 weeks but if it keeps being this wonderful I may just keep going. I used to hate it when I got this far post especially when it was time to detangle or wash/cw. Now I look forward to doing all of this. It's amazing how the simple things can make such a huge diffference in your regimen.

That's an amazing story! And co-signing again about the simple things. I hope your stretch/(transition?) continues to go well :yep:

I just did it this morning! I cowash with butter treatment then oil rinse and either don't rinse it completely or add a little back. :yep:

i used a litle of HH once but usually i use a standard like salerm 21 b5 but the hh made my hair soooooo soft so i will be doin this more often.

This really is the way to go for wash and goes. After rinsing out the conditioner when combing under the shower stream I add some conditioner back in for my airdry. Conditioner works well to for setting hair for a braidout too.

I love this!!! I have been doing it ever sense PF mentioned it and my hair LOVE  it! My hair is much easier to manage and definitely more moisturized. And the great part about it is it's much cheaper!!

I like putting a little back in too. Long Term Relationship is what I <3, though I've been using this coconut conditioner till I find another store with the LTR in it.

Okay, what am I doing wrong. I have sereb dermatitus, and I recently tried the co-washing thing and it makes me have so much itchy build up and debris even though I wash throughly that I have to wash my scalp every 5 days. Maybe cowashing isn't for me even though I love the moisture that it provides.

I have never heard of that condition but what conditioner are you using? If push comes to shove, you might have to make your own homeade conditioner. This should be more gentle on your hair/scalp than commercial products. I don't have any recipes but I am sure you can find them on the Hair Recipe board. HTH.

@JOYFULJOY...Ok--stupid question: You can leave a regular conditioner in your head? I thought it had to be rinsed out.
:look:
But I'm not sleeping on your methods. I cowash with and use my conditioner (with water and a few oils) as a leave-in--but the conditioner can double as a leave-in.

I just never knew you could leave regular conditioner in your hair after the fact...

co-sign even more so since i've been working out!

Yep, this is really where it benefits me the most. I workout in the evenings and by the time I'm finished with my class, my hair is drenched and dripping wet with sweat. I am going to start oil rinsing my hair too cuz I heard that this makes your hair dry in no time flat so I'm thinking that for daily co-washers this could mean that rollersetting every night could become a reality.

Yeah this is what I've started doing more of as well, and I've got to say, no need for moisturizer... I've been searching for the perfect moisturizer actually and nothing really satisfies what I'm looking for, either too heavy or just not quite right. I've been adding in my Coconut Milk Organics Conditioner - just a small amount, and then sealing with their coconut milk serum, and sometimes a little coconut oil. My hair is finally VERY happy....:yep:

The one concern you may have with doing this is definitely build up. If you use conditioners that have a high silicone content then you will likely need to clarify more often. But with small amounts I would assume you'd be ok. Afterall a lot of moisturizers also have silicones in them too (mostly dimethicone), but I find that often they are too heavy for my hair or I just don't feel like they work as well as I'd personally like them to.

I've started to use the Organix line as my leave-in (I also love Salerm 21 so I switch back and forth depending on what I feel like doing or what my hair needs). You only use a small amount in any case... If you use too much it can start to feel a bit filmy. My hair seems a lot more moisturized, even less tangles, doesn't catch on itself, and when I flat iron, it feels silkier. Also blowdrying doesn't dry my hair out with this either...

And when I looked at the ingredients of some of the moisturizers I've used (mainly Elasta QP mango butter, Ors Olive Oil Moisturizer, and Jane Carter Nourish and Shine) they have similar ingredients. Only the conditioner has less things added giving MY hair a more weightless feel.

IT'S EXTREMELY BAD DANDRUFF! I use perscription lorpox shampoo perscribed by my derm.

Anyway, do you ladies just wash the hair (the back of my hair) with conditioner and leave it off the scalp......if so, what do you use to detangle?

M.
