I am not... I just threw out the Alma Aritha and Shikikai powders .. I stopped doing it because my hair didnt like it AT ALL. I would follow the general accepted method of
  • Overnight Prepoo with my oil mix
  • "Washing" with the wash mix
  • following up with a dc and air dry
Ladies my hair has never been drier. I was watching the breakage, the split ends RUIN my hair. I would try to roller set afterwards and have oily limp hair that was still very fine. I just couldnt get it to work, not to mention that the mixing of things took FOREVER since i started getting MOLD IN MY WASH MIX and would have to remake it weekly, and it was messy as all heck. After all the work I put into it, my hair was worse off than before. Limp Lifeless and not looking any thicker. I won't be going back.

Anywho, I am still trying to see who has kept up with it, who saw good results, and what is what with this

PrettyPuff,
I'm so sorry you had ill effects from the powders. I've been doing the powders, shampoo bars, and premade shampoo since January with numerous healthy benefits. I found some things I do differently from you, such as more moisturizing conditioning products. It may make a difference if you decide to attempt an Ayurvedic regimen in the future. For example, on a daily basis I use a cream moisturizer like Silk Elements Revive & Restore Oil Moist lotion or ORS carrot oil moist with Coconut oil or Vatika to seal. I don't use much oil either, my nightly oil prepoos are rarely only oil. I don't like limp, oil saturated hair either.

Secondly, I put my Amla, Shikakai, and Brahmi through my coffee maker to dissolve and eliminate as much grit as possible for easy rinsing. Once it cools, I don't let it sit on my hair, I just pour through lightly manipulate my scalp until I get through all of it. Then I rinse for any remaining grit and go into a quick conditioning phase, something like CON conditioner I may do for like 5 to 8 minutes. Then I'm going to deep condition once I do that for like 20 minutes with ORS replenishing condish.

The powders can be drying and make the hair hard, but try them with other moisturizers you use and you'll get softer hair. Also, I don't use powders every week, I rotate between powders, the Shikakai bar, and an all natural premade shampoo.

Bar soap is easy to use and gives a great lather.

I just go this because my local indian store was out of Amla powder and she suggested it because it only has the herbals. I like it, great alternative and no ill effects.

I'll show my comparison pics and you can PM me if you have any other questions.

HTH! Hang in there, you will find a way to try again!

I know that the grit and residue can cause breakage and this is what happened to me the very first time I used the powders.
Now, I strain my mixture twice and my hair is loving Ayurvedic powders like crazy.
I have noticed a lot of difference in the health of my hair.
Also, because Shikakai is drying, I add twice as much of the other powder(s).
Not trying to make you convert or anything, but this may helpchange your mid .

I think everybody has to tailor hair care to their specific hair needs. What works for some doesn't work for all I suppose. Cause some ppl are moisture deficient. Some protein deficient, etc...
Sometimes hair will gravitates towards certain products or ingredients. While others won't.
But I could be wrong...

ANywho--
I thought shikakai (or however you spell it) was a strengthener...?
This is the reason I never bought it--figured my hair wouldn't respond to it.:nono: Anyway I just use Henna and Amla.

Actually Amla is the strengthener & Shikakai is the cleanser (as far as I know). I use the powders once a week but I'm really tired of the grit. I'm too lazy to take all of the time it takes to get all of the grit out. Once I'm out I probably won't be buying anymore powders. I'll just stick w/the poo bar & the oils.

I have quite a bit of the powders, including amla, shikakai, brahmi, bhringraj, hibiscus petal powder, tulsi and aritha. I use them for different things and I mix them differently quite a bit but I always add my bhringraj powder to whatever I mix together becasue it is very moisturizing for my hair. I pre-poo with oils mixed with a little conditioner (Tressemme with B5) and I also make a tea rinse with distilled water, strain it, then add a little bhringraj and/or coconut oil to it before pouring over my hair.

I usually leave it in for about 30 minutes with a plastic cap on sometimes with heat and sometimes without heat, then wash out with a cheapie type conditioner like VO5, Suave, or even Tressemme with B5 vitamin (I have 2 and a half gallons of this). I always follow with some moisturizing deep conditioner for about 45 minutes with heat. My hair loves these powders:lick: and I have way less shedding than I used to have.
