Thinning from braids?

Has anyone who uses braided styles for growth (like almost constantly) noticed any thinning of their hair that they contribute to the braids?

I just got a full sew in with my hair braided in a bee hive with the weave sewn on top. I know that the last time I did this, I got a lot of growth, but also lost shed hairs. I also didn't get the very bottom of my hair braided this time because the last time she braided it so tight that it bumped up and broke off in one section. I had a bald spot there, but the other part did grow.

I transitioned in braids and never shedded more than what you're supposed to shed. I always kept tension low(like not wearing all of the braids PULLED up in a tight pony) and kept them well oiled. I would go no less than 6 months at a time with no damage to the hair line and with all of my hair in tact.

Hmmm maybe it's the relaxing and not the braiding...I was just thinking b/c this last time i had my hair braided they were too tight (this time also) but i just thought my hair looked thinner....maybe it's just the way it's growing or the hair being pulled out from the braids being too tight!!

When I used to do micros...lost more hair while in them and after taking them out....I wouldnt recommend those styles to anyone...They did nothing for my hair or growth. I wear ghanian braids aka feeding braiding. Depending on who I get to do them the only problem I notice is when they are too tight on the edges they yank my hair out but BT/Gro out oil sorts that out. Other than that my hair is actually thicker and healthier because in braids I dont use heat...even to dry in cold weather only the occasional condition with heat. I can just concentrate on taking care of it without the bad hair day issues:grin:....so I guess I am what you call an obessive braid wearer....I am in them Jan to Dec(redone every 4-6 wks of course:lachen:)

I only experienced some slight damage from tiny braids once.
They weren't quite as small as micros but they pulled too much on one side.

I never did them that small again. And I didn't get anymore damage.

I wasn't doing them constantly.

Cornrows are the only braids that I do frequently and I don't get any damage.

But my hair is strong like grasshopper.

I notice the most growth/retention when I wear big braids like Senegalese or french braids.. but they dont last nearly as long

Yes, I had thinning on my edges when I wore my braids. I was braiding it tight, and I pulled into ponytails pretty often; that was why. I tried to switch up the styles once pretty often, but the pulling kills it. My edges got thicker after using Wild Growth.

I noticed some thinning on my edges and crown area when I wore cornrows, now I just stick to kinky twists, or just twist my hair myself. It's thickened back up since I stopped getting them.

Never had a problem through my transisition.

Did have a problem from STUPID BRAIDERS about 2 yrs ago.. I am totally recovered now..........

My next braid up, I'm thinking seriously about doing these but with extensions. I did it before and my hair grew very well with these. I have individual boxed braids now and I really like them but I want a different look next time.

yea I did but the key is to get somebody to braid your hair not too tight. Cause I had a problem where somebody braided my hair so tight thta my roots came out around my edges. thats a no no!! but I use bt everyday

my hair always thins after micros... especially my edges... which is why I dont do micros anymore

DITTO! I love micros, I used them to transition and they did a number on my edges. No I avoid them like the plague:wallbash:

When I braid my own hair, however, I'm very careful w/ my edges. I don't braid too tight, so I don't have to worry about breakage:look:

Edges are so delicate. I have to get mine re-done this weekend. I can feel them loosening already and it's scary. I already called my hair braider and booked my appointment for my edges.

I think that you can have thinning from braids especially in the edges for the reasons that alla the others girls said : tension in the side and mat in the nape when you don't redo braids regulary .
I do braids and sew-in the six past months
(C and G method ) I dind'nt notice thinning .
Cecilie .

thank you ladies i think because my hair is fine the braids just do a number on them and then the braiders tell me well your hair is too "light" aka fine we have to braid it so tight or it will slip. when i was natural i didn't have a problem but now that im texlaxed i don't think my hair can handle them so i'm just going to stop and grow my hair without them...i see people getting the same amount of growth as me with no braids...so hopefully d/c, rollersets, vits, MN, and MegaTek will help me get to BSL by the end of the year... thanks to everyone who replied!!!!!!!!!

I experienced extreme thinning and breakage from my micros. In the beginning they were great and I acheived alot of length from them. But I was being lazy and went to a salon that was closer to my house instead of going to the usual place that I go to and all I heard while she was braiding was my hair snapping and cracking. My hair is still trying to recover now.:ohwell:

I've followed the c n g method for five years, and it never thinned my hair out When i was using the regular strength relaxer, i noticed thinner edges, so now i've switched to mild and use Ayurveda growth tonic and oil, and my edges are as full as ever.

I've had mine profesionally braided 1 times with that said. For me: I always have the front portion braided back and away from my face like in the pic below.

Den1, what are these and where do you get them from?

no. when i had my last set of individual braids i couldn't braid my hair line because it was too short, i kept them in for 3 months and my hairline grew back a lot.

i had a set put in yesterday and the hairline is braided up. i plan to spray every 2 days with ic fantasia hair strengthener and to take them down every 7-10 days to redo. i DC'd every week until i put these braids in and did henna about 2 weeks prior.

if i notice my hair is weaker around the area or see white bulbs, i have no problems removing the braids from there only.

eta: my first set weren't as tiny as micros but still small. my second set has some micro-sized braids but they are bigger towards the crown and hairline. i experienced the most damage to my hair when i had cornrows; i'm still somewhat afraid to do them again.

see if i could do the crown n glory method on my own like my own braids then i could do it but depending on other people and then having them braid my hair too tight is just too much

yes micros always do more harm than good to your hair. my friend put them in and she was left with a head full of damage after:nono:

I agree. I did micros once and never repeated it. I prefer the individual boxed braids like what I'm wearing right now.:yep:

yes i just relaxed my hair and i can tell it definitely thinned in the front...yep that's it for the cornrows and the braids. just honeycombs in the back with the front left out to wear a fall.
