Naturals how do you combat dryness?

I'm just not sure what's going on with my hair right now. I did a DC with cholesterol and rinsed put in some spray on leave in and sealed with vatika. Hair came out nice and moist - that was 3 days ago and now my hair is dry again :nono:. I'm new to the natural thing - any suggestions on combating dryness which was always my enemy when I was relaxing anyway?

I need to moisturize and seal my hair everyday - sometimes twice a day.

Think about it...you moisturize your skin everyday. :yep:

i haven't had a problem with dryness since using castor oil after washing/rinsing my hair. i also DC once a week with cholesterol, normal condish and olive oil. water is also very important for moisture so i make sure i rinse a few times a week then apply castor oil.

my hair going dry after three days without applying more product wouldn't be too big of a concern for me :look:. for me personally, it's not realistic to do my weekly routine (once a week wash, DC & apply castor oil) and then expect my hair to be soft and moisturised for the rest of the entire week. i think this is true for other people also because some co-wash daily or a few times a week for moisture at least. i hear of other naturals having to spritz their hair with glycerine mixes a few times a day. maybe rinsing almost daily or co-washing frequently is an option you need consider.

other things to consider that may dry your hair out are harsh weather, sleeping without a scarf and too much heat. just some things to keep in mind.

hth!

LOL true I should have thought of that it's just that the relaxed bits of my hair are still nice and soft but all my natural bits are dry and hard as thought i hadn't done anything to them at all! I've never had this problem before usually everything would stay soft and I might apply something to my ends only. It feels like I didn't even moisturize after washing except it's only the natural hair. I guess I might have to start changing my routine for that portion of my hair until I BC?

ETA: Also I forgot to add I've been putting a castor oil shea butter WGO mixture on my scalp for growth. I'd expect my roots to be somewhat oily not dry prior to this much natural hair.

I have to moisturize daily and DC in one from or another every other week - :nono: There's no other way to keep it moist. Some of the longer haired naturals have come up with a way to keep their hair constantly moisturized, but haven't shared the details yet....

  • Prepoo
  • wash hair with baking soda and water
  • DC for 1 hour under ghetto hood dryer
  • Protective styles most of the time.

I moisturize everyday! I never miss a beat:lachen:

I also seal my ends w/ jamaican black castor oil at night, and if it's feeling extra dry (b/c I color my hair) I baggie my entire head by covering it with a shower cap that I secure w/ a sport headband (the kind basketball players wear). Then I put my satin bonnet on and go to sleep.:yep:

That always cures my dry spells.

I can't lock in moisture with oil and expect my hair to be soft two days later. My hair prefers butters for sealing over oils.

I moisturize with a homemade spritz and seal daily. Works for me. :)

I don't remember exactly who it was on the forum that suggested it but she was a perm-y and recommended moisturizing and sealing the ends and then baggying them with one of those "roller-set" rollers. I've done it for the past week and it has made all the difference. Even co-washing daily, my ends were always dry, I tried it and I'm hooked. HTH!

Yeah, I leave some conditioner in my hair (Pantene for curly hair) and spray my hair every other day with a good mixture of water and vegetable glycerin which can be found at Whole Foods in the supplement and beauty section.

Hair stays soft all day!

Most definately you need to moisterise everyday IMO.

I myself had to remind myself to do this just this week. Last week i took out my twists and my hair felt sooo dry and im sure my hair was breaking. I went into a panic and bought Aveda damage control lol (whether that helped i don't know).
But this week i have gone back to moisterising my hair everyday with my lovely ORS Olive Oil and my hair feels great again and it doesn't appear to be breaking. It's just a testament to why you need to moisterise, moisterise, moisterise.

P.S the lil PJ in me needs to get me some Caster Oil :look:

Ever since I started using Qhemet Biologics products on wash days, I find that it is not necessary for me to moisturize every single day.

When I do moisturize though I use Miss Jessie's BabyButtercreme. This is the BEST moisturizer in my opinion. It not only leaves my hair feeling moisturized, it LOOKS moisturized and shiny. I always get compliments on the shine.

For me, water and glycerin spritz has helped me with my dryness. I haven't had a dry day since I began using it. In a spray bottle, I mix half glycerin, half water. I use it right after I co-wash. My hair is DUMB soft after ward!

Good stuff everyone said....
I also think that getting your hair in Optimal condishing will help with the Dryness.

Maybe you can start with a caramel treatment - leave it on over night. and see what happens after that. For me that is the QUICKEST route to moisture. Be Patient...it Takes time.

Also for me - I cut 99% of commercial products from my hair diet. that helped my hair tremendously.:yep:

Co-signing again on the glycerine water mixture......affordable and does the job over and over and over again!!!

If you don't do anything else, do the glycerin.

:yep: I ran out of glycerin for a while, and my hair was NOT happy. My hair loves it.

In total agreement with the quoted

I've been experimenting with various things, thanks to the experience of the ladies on LHCF.

Prepoos are good - I make mine with a mixture of cheapie conditioner (usually Suave Humectant), coconut oil, and shea butter. Spritz water on hair, apply prepoo, and let stew under a plastic cap for an hour or so before shampooing. The prepoo mixture can also be used for a cowash once or twice a week. I really like the way it makes my hair feel.

Shampoo with a good moisturizing, detangling shampoo. I usually dilute the shampoo in a couple of cups of warm water. Just pour the mixture on the head and "wash" the fat, individual twists I braid my hair into before I shampoo.

Deep Conditioner - Nexxus Humectant is my favorite for now. But I've tried and liked ORS Replinishing Pak (mixed with some coconut and castor oil) Just apply to hair and sit under a heating cap or dryer for an hour or so.

Leave-in - My favorite leave-in is a conditioner that I bought from a site called groafrohairlong. This product never fails to leave my hair soft AND moisturized. It's a little pricey, but I find that it's worth it. I just apply, comb thru, and braid my hair into doube-strand twists.

Daily Moisturizers - I'll often spritz a mixture of water/glycerin and my leave-in only my hair just to keep it nice and soft (only as needed). Or I'll mix some Suave humectant with water, apply it to my ends and then seal w/ a mixture of castor and coconut oil

Misc. - Since I've began using Boundless Tresses as a hair growth aid, I've decided to beef up the moisture on my scalp (I've heard that sulphur can be drying to the hair), so I ordered Qhemet Biologics Alma & Olive Heavy Cream to help combat the dryness. I've heard a lot of good things about the product, so I'm excited to try it.

I'm sure you'll find a hair regimen that works well for you. Just lurk around the boards/threads and, in time, you'll find exactly what you need. :yep:

I use water every morning and at night. My hair is a moisture hog.
Morning Routine
Spray hair with water
Softsheen Carson Wave moisturizer
Crew Leave-in condish
Almond and Peppermint Oil
fluff hair back up and hit the yellow brick road.

I have to moisturize every day or my hair does get dry.

I know right? maybe we should start a thread and call them out...:lachen::lachen::lachen:
