It will be 4 months in 2 weeks. I got them to help me stretch. I have been redoing the edges as needed. I can wear extensions for a long time because my hair does not dread like some people's do. When I take off the braids I do have a small section of dandruff and tangled hair underneath the part where the fake hair starts. I believe this is because the normal shredding that is supposed to tkae place gets caught in the braid and rinsing periodically alloaws the dandruff to get trapped there.
I am so excited to take these braids out and see the progress that I made...but I don't want to blow it. And I am permed so I know I can't perm it right away. But what else should I do to maximize on this stretch?

Detangle, Detangle, and Detangle some more. That's the only recommendation that I really have. When I had braids in the past I made sure I detangled my hair carefully and removed majority of the gunk at the top before washing. HTH.

Hey lipyt! I use PrincessAyA (sp?) method. Her thread is called How to prevent matting. I'm subscribed to it, so I will bump it 4 u.

I read somewhere on this board that someone used conditioner to help take out the braids. I think she put it on the braids before removing them. I'm guessing it helps to remove the braid with ease.

I'm not exactly sure what she did after that though. Maybe you should let the conditioner sit, like add some more and use it as a pre-poo to soften up the hair some before you try to shampoo it or comb it.

Girl, this thread helped my lil ass out too. I'm going through the same phase right now.. I'm about to take my extensions and I'm so excited to see my progress.

sac passe bellebebe? When are you taking your braids out? How long have you had them in?

When I take my cornrows down after 6+ weeks, I put water and oil in my hair. For example, I take a wet wash cloth and use it to thoroughly dampen my hair (not dripping wet), then I apply a generous amount of EVOO to the wet hair. I'm wearing spiral cornrows, so I have to take the entire thing out before I detangle. When I start to detangle I then apply some conditioner for extra slip. My hair greasy at the end of the process, but I do not experience matting or impossible tangles, before or after take down and washing. I learn this method by trial and error. In 2005, I'd lost my hairline to matting and tangles after wearing braids.

ETA: My hair is natural.

Hi lipyt, how are you?

Just take your time when you remove them, do not rush the process.Don't schedule anything that day:nono:
Make sure to use your fingers to detangle the matted part of each braid.
Good luck and make sure to show us your progress.

I would suggest you deeeeeeeeep condition your hair and don't forget to moisturize!:yep: What kind of style did you wear for 4 months? I posted a thread for style advice but I didn't get much feedback. I need a style that's going to last longer than a few weeks. I had micros but I removed them after a month because I had some much new growth (I've been using an MN mix).

Platinum, I got box braids. Not too small that braids would be slipping out and not too big that it would get fuzzy too quick. When I first got them I wore it out. Then after a while I started wearing it in a loose ponybun.

I just took out my friend's micros on friday.

I had a spray bottle of glycerine. That really helped give us some slip when taking them out. It was good nourishment for her hair & scalp too.

I used the end of my rattail comb to unravel/pick them out.

I am going to try and look for that thread cause I will start taking my hair down this week. My micros have been in since the first weekend of Jan. so its finna be 3 months. And I miss my hair very much....:nono:
