Being Natural....

Have you upped your fashion game? I noticed some of the women in NYC that are natural rock the latest fashion or being ahead of the trends, saw them going into the tents for fashion week, just being FLY.

Being natural gave me the confidence to not care what others think anymore...that was what held me back from letting my personality spill onto my outward appearance.

So if i like it...I wear it. The only thing that makes something "fashionable" is really the attitude of the person wearing it and you can actually tell that they put it on b/c the liked it.

No I am pretty simple, I see what works for my hair and I go with it. but being natural did bring out the best in me. I am free to be me. Its a kind of a weird saying because we are always ourselves but you feel it differently I think when you become natural. First you have to get thorough that-- you look weird with that hair-- stage and once you embrace your natural you. I think you feel confident in rocking any style. I like to braid my hair and unbraid it and wear a chunky fro with big dangling earrings. I use to get a lof of stares but people are becoming more use to the natural look now. I seen some really cute styles in AC but I wouldn't do it, to me it looks like to much stress on the hair.

I went to the opening of LA Fashion Week this past Sunday. And I noticed that over half of the black women there were wearing their natural hair. Everything from Pressed straight to a green TWA. And it was a beautiful thing. And yes they had their fashion game together! (including me).
Also, I think it has a lot to do with the black models. It's important for them to have natural hair so hair stylist have more options in styling their hair. One client may want their hair in an afro on monday, then another client will want their hair silky straight on wednesday. So in fashion versatility is mandatory.

Actually, I have. I've been buying more feminine, but edgy clothes lately and a few people at work have asked me why I've been so dressed up.

I've notice the opposite maybe some are bucking the system too much and just don't feel like conforming to fashion (makeup, nails, etc) ideals either.

NYC may be more of the exception, than the rule.

I be thinking the same thing, that if I watch my natural hair and do something that is "conventionally" unnatractive (Martin with the beady bee's) that I'm gonna have to bring it!

And, like someone said before, I feel like the natural heads have a greater sense of self and don't feel like they need to conform to the norm, so they are more edgy with their dressing and kind of ooze confidence...

...at least that's what I see in the Chi.

I did. I also live in nyc, so that could influence me to make bolder fashion choices, but I have found my fashion choices are more unconventional and unique then when I was relaxed. I feel like big hair warrants big style.

It might also have something to do w/ the fact that often when ppl decide to go natural there is a bc, which results in shorter less versatile hair. Then women, b/c they can't hide behind their hair, feel like they must step up other aspects in order to keep their femininity etc, so they upgrade makeup, beauty regimes, clothes etc. Just a theory

I agree. I wore more makeup when I first became natural. Now I hardly wear it.

I can't say that I have, but then, I didn't really have a huge transition from 'relaxed for most of my life' to 'natural'.

As I've gotten older, I've become more confident in myself and how I carry myself, and I wear what I want...damn what a bunch of marketers trying to separate me from my loot have to say about it..... But then, I'm not trying to be an 'It' Girl, or 'That Girl' - I'm just trying to be me.... it's harder than it looks, most days.

Exactly. There's this one album I always look at from this girl whose not on this board. Her style is just so unique, so edgy that you know that style is purely 'her' and not just because its 'in'. That's what I've noticed from some naturals; they put a spin on their style and it really makes them stand out.

I appreciate it because a lot of times when people hear you're natural they automatically think of 'granola' or Black Panther movement.

ive noticed alot of nyc girls chopping off their hair and starting over... but i havent really seen any naturals who were "fly" yet... exept 4 teyana taylor, and other celebs.

when i first BC'd i had the urge to step it up. in hindsight, that was probably because i felt like i had to compensate for my hair being natural. deep down i know i felt it probably wasn't on the same "level" as relaxed or straight hair. i think some people feel the same way i did so that's why they want to dress better or pay more attention to other parts of themselves.

i think for others, they view being natural as some kind of "fashion" statement so up their outfits accordingly. people definitely perceive natural hair in a certain way and some people like to live up to those associations.

currently, i'm switching up my style but my hair is not the reason at all. especially now that i've been natural for just over a year so i'm comfortable with it.

i don't really think Naturals in NY r any different than anyplace else. I'm a born and bred NYer & what we do have is a great abundance of natural haired women walking around along with great places to get ur hair done.

What I think is that maybe some natural can put on the same outfit as someone relaxed and maybe people perceive it to be funkier because of the hair. I kinda feel people in NY can be hott to death in their clothes, look like bums, etc. lol

I noticed the same thing. I went to a club on saturday, and I noticed that all the natural sisters were dressed extra fly...me included

I think its both being natural and the stage of life that I am in. Although, natural hair is becoming more popular...my natural hair makes me feel so UNIQUE and I just take that a step further with my look. I feel like I can step further out of the box and just do "me" I love rocking a fierce twist out and a fly ecclectic outfit....it makes me stand out among my friends who are more traditional fashionistas...most who have natural hair but just keep it straight 90% of the time

I think that being natural breeds creativity in me...so it flows over to my jewlery, make-up, and makes be more bold and apt to try new thing....its great, its fun, its liberating!!
