and it's not cuz u left it in too long. What are some possible causes?

If you're like me, my experience was that I shedded because I refused to comb or manipulate my hair like I usually would days before relaxing (to avoid burns) Maybe that's why? Supposedly we loose between 50-100 hairs a day, so if you're not combing as usual, it would seem like it's "more" shedding.
Breakage, I would worry about. Anyone else chime in?

I just relaxed and had some shedding. How much did you loose?
A stylist that I know recommends using a clarifying shampoo after rinsing out the relaxer then use your neutralizing shampoo...the reason is because some relaxers leave an oily film that can't be penetrated unless you clarify..if you don't remove the film your hair will not be neutralized properly this can cause shedding and breakage
Check the ingredients in your shampoo...sulfates in shampoos can cause excess shedding in some people...I had to switch back to my sulfate free regimen after my shampoo caused a lot of shedding
