I've been dealing with single strand knots since about 7-8 months post BC. I can keep them to a minimum by not allowing my ends to dry naturally.

1) multi-day hair from a wash n go too often = single strand knots
2) airdrying my hair curly often = single strand knots
3) not detangling often = lots of single strand knots...I broke out my denman recently after going a couple of months only fingercombing....NEVER AGAIN! Too many knots. I must comb at least on wash day.

I can get a good trim today and find knots on the new hair tomorrow, so, I don't think the cause is solely split ends or dry hair or need a trim, etc. I think it's just the nature of kinky/curly hair. I've been told that as you gain more length, they are less likely. I'm between collar bone and APL stretched now, so, we shall see. I'm also wearing more braidouts and sets (curlformers, rollersets, etc) to help eliminate the problem. When I do rock a wash n go, I definitely MUST use a mositurizing gel.

I haven't had a matting/dreading experience yet as a natural. I think it's mostly because I haven't left my hair uncombed long enough.

This exactly how my hair has been behaving/misbehaving! Maybe its due to the air drying as I dont really use a hair dryer after each wash. Its really annoying finding little ribbon knots on my as cute as they look at the bottom I cant stand them. Some times even with ors olive lotion or conditioner I cant seem to undo them sometimes I have to chop them off:wallbash:

My hair does it, and I hate it. I'm relaxed, but I shed and I'm sure I have some splits, but I'm scared to cut it. My dauthers hair is notorious! Mostly around her edges and on the ends, and I can't get her to wear a scarf at all.

I used to get a lot of knots when I airdried all the time. Now, I try to rollerset at least half of the time. I really got horrible tangles and knots when I tried that not combing thing. That didn't work out for me.
But since I've started washing my hair with baking soda and doing rollersets half the time, I only see one (single strand knot) once in a blue moon.

This is why I don't understand the whole don't comb to get thicker hair theory. I mean I want thick long hair but come on how can I get that when I always have to cut my hair becasue of the dreading and balls or the balls cutting my hair it's self. I comb my hair like ever other day. That's what's combs are for the remove the dead hairs. If you don't remove them they will dread and knot up causing more harm then good. My conclusion comb your hair every other day if you're get dreads and knots on wash day.

Great thread. I get them when I wash my hair. Especially if I don't tend to it right away. It is usually shed hair or perhaps fibers. I use my fingers to detangle like I do with my jewelry when it sometimes tangles.

I do not comb my hair and that is probably the contributing factor to the shed dreds. Recently, I've started detangling first to remove the shed hair and then wash, I get much better results and less dred, mon!

I think I'm going to detangle more often to see if that reduces the dreds as well.

Combing my hair does nothing but rip it out - I'm not gentle enough. I get frustrated and literally rip out hair. :wallbash: When I use my fingers it reminds me that I have to be patient and calmly remove the tangles.

First time ever. I discovered it last evening after shampoo and deep conditioning. I worked it out for three hours last night, two hours this morning..mad as heck because this thing was literally giving me an earache as I tried to loosen it up. The knot was at the side rear area of my hair and it was big! Finally I worked the hairs around it out until I found this unfathomable knot...took out the shears and cut it away. Don't even know how it formed itself into this spider web so tightly and quickly..wasn't there two days ago.

This happens to DD. I do a take-down of her twists or cornrows then wash. This is when I get the knot balls at the ends. I think it is shed hair. I may start combing it a little before I wash.

I don't have any problems with my hair loc'ing but those single strand knots?!?!?!?! Grrrrrrr :wallbash::wallbash:

okay ya'll what the he// is this? they're really dark, tiny, round, hard, and are on strands of both of mine and my dd's natural hair. does anyone else experience these little bead like thingies in their hair? I had to blow the pics up so ya'll can see. we don't have bugs...:lachen: but we do have he//a hard water, it comes from the red sea:nono:

My hair does this which is why I am limiting my wash n go's. I used to do them religiously, now I may do it like once or twice a month. These days when my hair isn't straightened I co wash, airdry over night in twists/bantus and take them down in the morning. This helps me hair not tangle tremendously.

They're one strand knots. Or pixie knots. I only get them if my hair is dry and really only in one patch. A lot of naturals get them from continuous washing and air drying without detangling every time.

I'm relaxed and I've noticed my hair has been very tangly in the past few months. I've tried co-washes and would saturate my hair with the conditioner and try to comb but as my hair gets longer (and it's already a thick mop) the comb is not working. I told myself Im going to stop airdrying and see if that helps. I thought it may also be too much protein because my hair feels so hard.

Before i wouldnt really try to detangle my hair it was fine just the back area is Crazy curly and they knot up like grrrrrrrrrr:wallbash:
So i tried the Comb hair while wet with conditioner for my first time and it got worse.......................So thats when the denman Brush came in it worked really well but i think i will stick to finger combing in shower to detangle and pull out the denman brush when needed (not alot)
Keeping my hair Moisturized and bunning wrapping a silk scarf helps me alot off topic but i think its trendy too i need more colors to go with my outfits:look:

I hate that knot/tangle/loc whatever it was and realize as my hair grows longer and thicker I really need to check my strands more often and give in to more combing:ohwell:..still cannot figure out what I did wrong!!

Jamaican Black Castor Oil also does that for me when I seal my ends when wet! it really helped my ends along with pre pooing with Suave milk n honey mixed with Amla Oil :)
Yeah, moisturising and sealing my ends while wet has stopped my ends from knotting up.
My transitioning roots is another story. If I didn't plait my hair after every wash, I would be in big trouble.

I have natural 4 a/b hair and the trick to preventing ends from knotting or locking is to seal them and keep them moisterized daily. Every once in a while I will get a few hairs (less than ten) than will knot on the end and so I just clip those particular hairs, those hairs also tend to be the thinnest and weakest. Before using shealoe and daily hydration it used to happen more often with more hair.

this was my main problem when i was natural. I had knots of the end of like 3/4 of every strand. It was CRAZY. It still does this when i go like a braid out

It doesn't dred up, but I do get the occasional individual knot.

I'm 4a natural, I detangle with my denman and dust occasionally, I also keep my ends moisturized w/ JBCO:spinning:

I get the annoying single strand knots, so I look for them and cut them one by one....and I keep forgetting to get hair scissors so I don't know how much good I'm doing.
I'm trying the baggy method for the first time to see if it helps.

i use to get the single strand knots
but every since i started doing the oil rinse in the shower
and just putting a leave-in conditioner as styler
my hair doesn't knot anymore
i think if you keep your ends well moisturized
knots can be avoided:grin:

it could be a many of things.this has happened to me 2 years ago.my hair was excessivly sheddinding, breaking because for one,it needed to be trimmed because the last inch was dammaged.2.i needed a protien tratment intill i got its health back on track.after that,no more problems.now i dont trim at all for damage controll.i trim because my hair grows faster then the other side.good luck.

I am natural 4a/b, and I get knot balls at the ends. It is driving me crazy. I thing its the shedding hair getting cautgh at the ends and making knots.
I have been thinking of relaxing my hair again just because of all the knots I get. I dont know what to do to minimize the problem

I actually posted this a couple of years ago. I was really having a hard time with the knots, I stopped having that problem when I switch to Longterm relationship leave in. It seems to work very well with my hair that was the only change I made. I heard they were not making it anymore. I Hope that was not true in any case I brought four of them. Also me deep conditioning more has helped a lot. My hair will mat up if I detangle it and add leave in and leave it alone. I will find Loc spots and I have to detangle it and I loose hair when I do that too. So I feel you on that too. Its the nature of the natural. My hair is 3b 3c and some 4a I think in there. my hair is shoulder length

One thing I noticed and I don't know if anyone stated it was the condish I was using. When I started using White Rain Tropical coconut (cheapie for co-washing) to co-wash, my hair started to dread up and I found knots. When I was using Giovanni ( I am guessing any nice condish would work) I could go 2 weeks without combing and no knots, dreading or anything, just finger comb and go. Maybe that's the difference between and cheapie and a quality condish!:yep:

So, maybe and I don't know if it has been stated I didn't read the whole thread, you and I or all of us who have this problem need to toss the cheapie condishes or just change conditioners all together and see what occurs.

Hope this helps and that stops for me and you!:yep:

i wash my hair everyday so it never has a chance to tangle or dread at all.

I have the opposite results with daily washing. Airdrying is totally dreading up my hair. i just wash and go without combing for weeks at a time. i relaxed yesterday and i had so many clumps or "balls" hanging off the end of my hair that i thought i was losing hair. Never again! I'm going back to either blowdrying or rollersetting at least once a week.
