Here's my braid regimen.

1. I braid myself pencil-size or larger and NOT TIGHT. Secure, but not tight.

2. Immediately after finishing my braids I oil my entire scalp generously with a homemade oil blend in a fine tipped nozzle. Sometimes I'll warm it a bit. I let all of the oil soak into my hair and scalp. 9 times out of 10 with the right oil blend the itchies will be defeated BEFORE they even begin. I'm not a trichologist but my flawed science is that the nature of braiding is pulling at the root/bulb. It's being lifted a bit inside of the pocket that holds it in place. The oil takes advantage of that microscopic "lift" and gets down in there to soothe and lubricate. Go ahead and laugh. :lachen: But I don't itch or walk around slapping myself upside the head while I'm in braids. :p

3. I make my own moisture spritz...unless I'm lazy. If I'm not up to mixing, I'll buy a bottle of daily doctor, some infusium 23, and a spritz bottle. Make a mix that's 40% DD, 40% H2O, and 10% infusium. Use this for moisture and protein.

4. I wear my braids up in a loose bun because my hairline is hereditarily(is that a word?) fragile and fine-haired. I usually use hairsticks to hold my bun because I find I can control the tension better. Loop the hair around like a huge bantu and find that exact spot to weave the hairstick through and you're good to go until the end of the day. You could also use claws to hold them up or a ponyhold. Just make sure that your edges are not pulled too tight.

5. I dilute shampoo and pour it over my hair periodically and then rinse it. No manipulation usually. Sometimes I will make a hair tea and pour that over them. I'll do a clarifying treatment.

6. I oil my scalp about every other day. I do so after I've thoroughly spritzed my hair and scalp. My hair likes oil. My scalp eats it up. It provides lubrication and seals in all the moisture I'm putting on it.

7. At night I wrap my hair up with a large satin cloth. It's the kind where you wind it forward and backward a few times then tie it. Sometimes, if I want something to penetrate in during the night, I'll throw a wool hat on.

That's about it. Here's where I veer from Crown & Glory: The constant spraying ALL over. The oiling. Not sponging the braids. I don't remove the alkaline base with vinegar. There are probably some other differences. I don't like straight infusium or the braid spray recommended. I think her ideas are great and they've worked for lots of folks, but this is what I've always done prior to C&G. Where we're the same is that my regimen and hers are really just common sense practices when it comes to your hair and scalp.

I hope that helps!!

Thank you. I'm doing my own kind of C&G and am always looking at ways to tweak it.

Yep. I think she has the most well-known braid regimen and she's generous (and business saavy) to share it for free. I've never followed her regimen but I'm always eyeing that big bottle of afro detangler just wondering.

That's what I like about the boards, we share, we tweak, we learn, and our hair prospers!!!

Now I need to get my hair back into braids. I took em out Friday (or was it Saturday) it's Monday morning and I'm onto a third hairstyle already. Fro a puff to twists back to a puff and now I have something else in the works...:ohwell:

LOL I'm glad I'm not the only one. Since I've taken my hair out of twist extensions, my hands have been all up in my head! I definitely can't last 2 months out, I wouldn't have any hair left! So P1, what is your hand placement when you put in extensions? I can't seem to get the hair to start right at the roots.. I'm thinking that it's just practise, but I'm always open to tips!

I'm usually good with words but I fail when it comes to describing what I do. For braids I just fold it in half, lay it over the base hair and braid it right in. I don't wrap it around I just go straight into braiding. It's definitely one of those things that once you start doing it you get better and better. I'm like that with everything hair. I have to read over and over, visualize it, and then do it: latching or palmrolling locks, twists, extensions, etc.

Okay, I just kind of imaginary did one and I think that at one point I'm holding one half of the extension hair and the base hair under one thumb and forefinger right when I'm getting them started. I have big hands, long fingers but I've learned to be kind of nimble, get a firm grip, but not pull on the hair, etc.

Have you watched the Crown and Glory video? By the time, I had dsl to be able to watch it I had already learned how, but it could help you. I don't understand the loop thing she talks about but it could be something I'm just doing without thinking about it. If there's anything else I can say or reword to help, let me know.

hth,

eta: I looked at your album and I like your twists. When you get more practice it will go faster. I sometimes take longer on others than with myself esp. when it's a new head, plus I'm more mindful of parting on others. But honestly, it takes me 5-6 hours top for any braiding job. I have pics of a set of two strand twist extensions in my album. They hit a little above bsl (cause I like to pull them up into a bun). I've also done a twist bob thingamaboo similar to yours. Cute!!! I know your friend was loving what you did for her.

patient1 thanks SO SO much!

Another C &G-er! I'm in the process of putting my braids in now. My hair thrives in them but obvioulsy before LHCF I didn't take care of them as well as I should have. I'm putting them in myself and it's so easy doing them the way Robin demonstrates in her video. I put 7 in last night; we shall see how many I can do tonight . I hope to be done by Saturday night. However I cheated with the hair I'm using. It's called Wet Braid and it's already sectioned off and folded in half for you and at $1.99 a pack?! (See pic below. You can see what I mean by it already being divided. I seems like it's fussed together some how but it's easy to come apart when you get to that point of separated some of that hair to make the thickness even all the way down.) Child chicken! I just pull a section out and loop it over my hair and start to braid. I love it!

^^^^^^I have never seen that kind of weave before, but oh how it would soooo speed up doing braids!! I may need to stock up on some of these when I get back to braiding my own hair again. Thanks for the visual.

patient1, thanks for your regime, that sounds great and definitely makes perfect sense!

Hmmm....this does sound like a good regimen. I've been using half Infusium and half curl activator (S-curl). Perhaps I should cut back a little on both of those and add some H2O...thanks!

It's funny that this was bumped because I'm back in braids now. I put them in this weekend so that I could take better advantage of the master cleanse energy. :)

Sweetlyblessed, I've never seen hair like that either and I think it's GENIUS!!! I've gotten quick at pulling and tapering hair but I'll never be as fast as just picking up the right amount. I love the hair I use and I've gotten sort of loyal but I might cheat if I see that in a bss.

Last night I oiled my scalp and coated my hair with Cantu's Shea Leave-In (I hate the smell and I want to use it up) while at the gym. I sat in the sauna and steam room and just let my hair soak it up. The sauna's probably my favorite place to care for my hair. :)

Hey Patient1....would you mind sharing your homemade moisture spritz w/ us as well?!!! :yep:

Thanks

FYI - I just counted...it's 25 sections in each pack. I used 3 1/2 packs. I could have ended at 3 but I made the edges smaller for less stress on the area. Not bad at all for a full head of braids for only $6 to $8 dollars for hair.

Hey NappyRina:

I've got so many concoctions...where to start????

I'd say to keep it simple: mix about 4 parts aloe vera juice with .5 part glycerin and .5 your favorite leave-in plus a dollop of honey and your favorite oil. Add scalp friendly essential oils (rosemary, peppermint, etc.) Or save the e.o's for your scalp oil. I sorta prefer this since some e.o.s might be too drying for your ends.

You can even just do distilled water with a good leave-in and the honey and glycerin. Or nix the honey and glycerin and just shake up distilled and a few dollops of VO5.

I've also done some concoctions that have everything but the kitchen sink in em. Just make sure there's something for your scalp, lots of moisture and you're good to go. The distilled water (or aloe juice) make the best foundations in my opinion. Just go from there.

Just get some spritz bottles and experiment by keeping track of what's in them. It's great fun (esp. for us product ingredient junkies :))

I'm still putting them in and the ends are open so I wrap them up in a cute bun. HOWEVER, you can mos def burn the ends. I personally don't perfer to bc I hate the snagging on my clothes that it does. I am going to dip them in boiling water and let them hang straight...

or get a heat clamp and burn them abotu 2 inches above the end of the hair so that it looks like i wrapped a piece of the hair around the braid and let the rest hang left open. It's hard to explainand the picture won't post.

Thanks a bunch. I hate burning too..So - I just wondered if this product would Dip or not.....Can you use this burnere for Human hair braids?

Good question! I'm not sure. Here's the description.

Variable temperature hot tool has dual heating elements for a smooth seal on both sides. Reaches temperatures up to 200C (392F) This is one of the nicest tools on the market. Perfect for shrinkies, nail tipped/pre-bonded hair and sealing open ended braids (kanekalon fiber recommended). This tool is also great for adding and purging fusion glues!

Awesome!

Thanks for responding. I just bought this Hiar - so I am fired up........

I am gonna go hunting for this tool......:detective:

Another technique for sealing braids is to use just a dab of nail glue about two inches before the end (make sure u braiding the extension past ur natural hair length) and since its not being applied to ur natural no need to worry about damage.
