this happens to me alot.... its from shed hair getting mixed in with split ends. I just dust my ends or just untangle the end to remove the dredded end ball *LOL*

Oh the majority of my hair (crown area is 4a) my sides and nape is 3C

oh by the way.. I don't comb my hair... I just finger comb. I wear my hair texturized and my daily styles are bantu knots that I take down for a curly look.

I just dont know why my hair does this or if its normal ( i know there was a ball at the end of the hair thread)

Anyway, i dont wear cotton bandanas---they matt and dry my hair
I keep it oilied
Keep it either straightened or in a set form like braids or something
Comb daily

IM thinking airdrying does this to me,....dont know---anyone else?

Oh i didnt even see your post

:lachen:at the dredded end ball lol

So do you never do that not combing thing?

If your ends are 100% split free the shed hair will not catch?

Does it happen to you when your airdry in a ponytail or down more so than when your blowdry, rollerest, put it in braids or something?

I do not know what my hair type is, but as my hair got longer, I started getting lots of knots in 2007 and then toward the end of the year it started dredding and I had to cut three sections of hair at three different times to the scalp. The dreds were like seven or so pieces of hair that went beyond matting to dredding and would not "de-mat," so I had to cut. The knots stopped when I started adding yogurt to my conditioner weekly in October and the dredding stopped when I started using aloe vera in my hair in early January. I use aloe vera daily (the food grade version of it with purified water as it first ingredient, the 100% gel does not work for me) and my hair never tangles, mats or knots anymore. It is quite miraculous, plus the aloe vera give me lots of slip and makes my hair silky and keeps it moisturized and silky through the next day. I do rinse or co-wash nightly, airdry and wear a satin scarf to bed.

the hair on my nape does...my hair grows really really low at the back and so it rubs against my cloths and causes knots :nono: i usually fingercomb the hair several times which has resulted in less balls and overall frizziness

since I don't comb my hair at all:look: I think it contributes to alot of the shedded dredded balls:lachen:.. I would guess that shed hair wouldn't catch as much even if you did have 100% split free ends.. but since I don't have 100% split free ends... I am prbly more prone to dred balls.. oh well :lachen:

Jamaican Black Castor Oil also does that for me when I seal my ends when wet! it really helped my ends along with pre pooing with Suave milk n honey mixed with Amla Oil :)

My hair type is 4 and my hair locks up after weeks of washing it in twists without untangling them. I just wet it, put some Giovanni Direct Leave-In in it, rub it in a little and gently pull it apart.

Yes I get the balls/knots at the ends. It just means that I need to detangle and remove shed hairs.

:yep: This happens occasionally to me - two main root causes are lint balls (lately, my flannel sheets are the main culprits) and shed hair - if I allow my hair to be loose, and do not detangle at LEAST daily - the shed hairs migrate to the end, and they 'tie' my hair together. :nono:

My hair dreds quite easily. I don't get knots on the ends tho...I plan on getting sister locs in the future :yep:

I have type 4ab hair, and I mostly finger comb it

Gotta love the GIOVANNI DIRECT LEAVE-IN! :yep:

Yep. I don't have to do anything for this to happen to my hair. It is naturally what my hair wants to do. I do have to do things for it not to happen. I don't think split ends make a difference. I have a lot of breakage from the comb, but my ends are not split. I've been paying attention for at least the last 1/2 year and in all that time I've seen exactly 1 hair that had about 1cm of split on it. I have no split ends, because I break my hair off before it even gets a chance to split. But I do have lots of knots and those "nappy balls". :lick: Okay, I need to quit playing. Um, since I stopped blowdrying my hair and combing less, they have definitely increased in number. I did these things because I got convinced that this was the healthier alternative for my hair. But with the knots and breakage those shed hair cause, I'm beginning to change my mind. I think I will go back to blow drying my hair from now on. Well, maybe I'll try rollersetting first.

Anyway, i dont wear cotton bandanas---they matt and dry my hair
I keep it oilied

I was suspicious of the airdrying, too...may have to make some changes now...

Mine has been doing this since i started airdrying. I think i'll stop for a while and see what it does. But that could be a reason because mine has been like this lately.

I don't get knots on average, but I just took my micros out and when I washed my hair, it was so stuck together...matted and knotted up...that conditioner couldn't seperate it and I ultimately had to cut about an inch of it off. =( I was so mad.:wallbash: I trimmed the rest of my ends even (b/c I like level ends) so it all can grow back together, but never again. Braids longer than two weeks do not work for me. Shedding, knots and tangles is not a good look. I see now that I MUST comb aka "caress" my hair often or it'll get mad and do something hellish like shed or break.

yes but combing detangling it frequently (every 2-3 days) cuts down on it tremendously but thats only when its loose

I do not get tangles or balls or dreds in my hair. I do get knots at the ends or even higher up the strand. I detangle, DC, shampoo, condition and twist my 4 something natural hair once a week and moisturize everyday and sleep in a satin bonnet, but I still get knots. They are worse in my nape (peas in the kitchen!) because of turtlenecks and and a hairline that creeps all the way down my neck.

I hate them, but I realize because my coils turn back on themselves several times per strand, no matter what I do, I will still have a few. :ohwell: I anticipate having to be more diligent as I gain more length.

I S&D every week on wash day and try to keep my hair in a high pony to prevent rubbing to minimize the knots.

What do you do to cause this on your hair?
Well when I was natural at the 7 month mark i started to get a few. When I hit 8th months they started taking over. Now I didnt have this problem until I started getting my hair pressed and letting others touch my hair. That was some of the worst torture I've ever experienced. Everybody complain about my hair saying I had boy hair and it was toooooo thick and compacted. I must admit it was pretty dense but that doesnt give the right for others to think that they can just rip through my hair cause its not what they are used to or want to deal with. Everyone refused to work with my hair damp so I accepted the torture and eventually got tons and tons of knots until I decided to to just relax.

What do you to prevent it, whats your hairtype, and status?

Im predominately 4a/b. I wanna say 4b cuz Im far from saying I got "good hair" but my hair has does have some sheen especially when using the right products. Also I had definite spirals and curls but dispersed all over and sometimes randomly. There is a patch on my crown that is so silky and defined and the front although not as shiny has loose spongy curls.

Right now its jacked up relaxed and Im in the midst of transitioning.

I put my hair in twists not really to prevent knots but to take down all that volume. I couldnt even put on a hat or ever imagine pulling it into a ponytail.
Below are some ways I think should keep your hair from knotting and tangling.
1. Never brush or comb through you hair dry unless you have a very loose texture. Even then be wary.
2. Use very moisturizing and de-tangling products when dealing with your hair. Especially when pooing and co washing.
3. Cover your hair up at night
4. Use good leave in and they will leave your hair moisturized and manageable
5. When letting other do your hair if it hurts stop them even if your hair is halfway done. More than likely that person is damaging your hair. Think about which one is more important. Your hair or a style that will only last for so long. And if you joined LONG hair care forum I will go ahead and assume you will choose your hair so that it will grow healthy and long in the long run.

Yes! :wallbash:

My hair does this, though alot less often than it use to.

But it was more or less my fault for being careless.

Now I detangle as often as possible, condition everyday & sleep with a satin pillowcase. I also braid my hair at night sometimes which really helps.

A large part of it, in my case i believe, had to do with split ends and avoid any product with mineral oil or petroleum like the plauge

I use to get these. I tried to keep the ends trimmed b/c I knew that my hair is prone to split ends but it just seemed like I was not getting them fast enough or something b/c I always had them.

I do get the occasional knots, but not so often nowadays. It happened more often when my hair was in bad shape and dry like the Sahara.

My hair doesn't lock naturally, but the curls sorta like clump after a few days, which almost look like locks if I don't separate them.

particles from fabric and shedding create this problem for me sometimes.
I cover my head when I am putting on a sweater, and also at night. Examining, a knot, I usually see a fiber from fabric blending a shed hair, trying to make it's way to the ground, to an attached strand.

Also keeping my ends moisturized helps the shed hair slip out during my next co-wash.
