Is this stealing?

I smell, look, pump, spray, but no dipping of the fingers. I try to buy from chain stores so that I can return if I don't like it. If I buy a product I don't like it from a BSS (which is rare cuz I try not to shop there) I give it away or throw it out.

I do it all the time, and I don't see myself stopping. There is a difference between sticking your entire finger in a jar and lightly touching it with the tip of your finger. It would not bother me if someone's finger tip had touched something I bought, cuz ur still getting their "cooties" by touching the same bottle they touched anyway.

When you buy a new product and you don't know the texture or whatever of the product and you want to open it and test it...is that wrong?

And does anyone else do this?

I do this but I was thinking about how I wouldn't want a whole bunch of people's fingers in my products before I buy them so maybe I should stop.

I know if I open like an oil product in a jar if I see finger prints across the top, I won't buy it.

I would imagine that the store owner would could consider it wrong. I consider it to be so tacky that words fail me.

I never stick my finger in products, but I do smell it to make sure it doesn't stink. I never buy products with fingerprints inside.

The first time I considered buying amla lite oil, I had to make sure it didn't smell bad. I discretely opened the bottle and the indian man who worked there came out of nowhere and yelled at me saying I had to buy it. I played it off and said I just wanted to make sure it was fresh before I bought it (like if I really knew what it was supposed to smell like ). I was so glad that it smelled pleasant unlike the regular amla that others complain about.

I won't touch or use the product, but if its not sealed, I will open the top and look at the consistency and smell the product. I wouldn't want to end up purchasing a product that someone else's hands were in.

This post was so enlightening. I didn't know so many people would do this. I am going to be very careful about purchasing products in the future (try to pick ones from the back). That is gross!

I knew it. People do some crazy things, even though I don't view this as all that bad- Just watch what you buy. I also get stuff from the back Shoot, I was in a market the other day, I was in the greeting card/stationary aisle looking for a composition book. I look up on the shelf and I see a frosted donut that part of the frosting had been licked off and the person took one bite out of it and left it there LOL I am SO not suprised at what people will do. Watch Dateline when they get to talking about those everyday germs, behind the scenes at restaurants, and stuff like that... people putting a finger into a jar is the least of our problems

I wouldn't call it stealing. I want to know what the product smell and looks like. If it stinks, im putting it back on the shelf. I haven't put my fingers in anything though.

Now i do need to admit that when i first started my hair journey in highschool, that i would sample the product. I would only have like $10 every 2 weeks to spend on hairstuff so i wanted it to be worthwhile (no excuse) If it was a bottle type container instead of jar, I would open it, smell it, and squeeze it just alittle, and then i would like swipe the conditoner or hair lotion that was sticking up onto my finger.
If it was in a jar, i would open it, smell it, and if there was any product on the underside of the lid, i would swipe it.
I would rub the stuff on my nape......Then which ever one felt the best buy.

Now that im over 18 i for sure wouldnt be doing that, wouldnt want to be locked up for sampling hair products, Can also buy them and trash them, also know my staple products, and i also think its really nasty to open a jar of something, and theres a big finger swipe right in the middle (that and smelling is the reason i open jars now) But what i used to do is probally even worse because knowone even has a clue---i thought it was a better option if i was going to touch it though because my fingers would never really touch their product. But i do believe its stealing because your taking away some product that someone else was supposed to have in full.

They need to make little samples that sit in front like they do lotions and makeup.

I do this with new air fresheners too.. no way I'm going to wait till I get home to find out something smells like Sour Summer's Eve when it was supposed to be a Spring Day or something (so I spray a little in the air).

I know it's hard finding products that you like - I have probably spent well over $1000 trying in the past seven years that I absolutely loved. And I am still searching....

I have never done that. I just buy the product if I do not like it then I give it away to a family member or a friend. I think that is wrong.....IMHO.

i do it all the time. esp w. makeup and nail polish. with nail polish i make sure no one is looking and put some on my nails to see if it compliments my skin tone. same w. make up. i dont want to have to spend good money on it if it doesnt even go w. me

This is why everything I buy, if it's not sealed I open and inspect. I inspect every darn lipstick, jars of cream, lipgloss, hair gel that I buy.

I refuse to buy ANYTHING that someone else put their filthy fingers, lips etc in or on.

75% of the lipstcks I open at drugstores have been tried on. erplexed 40% of the gels or jars of hair crap I buy has someone's finger dug into it. Ticks me off.

I am the minority. If I don't like something, I take it back or give it to my mom.

I DO try perfumes (at the counter with the tester) and house sprays though.
