Black elites/upper class and hair...

Girl that plastered stiff overdone spaceshipped looking hairstyles you always see in black haircare mags! I hate those hairstyles. It's come to the point, that when I pick hairstyles that are soft and flowing, I have to pick up a white hairstyle pic.

Black hairstyles are just too busy and hard for me. Where are the photos of the soft feminine hairstyles of black hair. I find it so hard to find them.

I agree only ghetto girls still wear those styles. They've been out since the 90s. I went to the hair salon every week when I was relaxed and in high school and we did not wear hair styles like that. They were all soft and flowy styles. No gelled to high hell styles. And I went to a regular AA salon. My mother has since switched to another salon but it's the same deal.

^^^ Yeah. I guess over the years we started going to the Dominican salons instead of the AA salons. This thread started in 2005. It seems like in the last 3 years more and more people started switching over or using both.

I've always gone to AA salons. And most of the black women in my area go to AA salons. I can count on one hand how many times I've been to the Dominican salon. I didn't even know we had them here until about 2 years ago. And even then there was only 1 or 2 way in the hood across town. Also the Dominican Salon here is not cheaper than most of the AA salons. The Dominican salons here in MD are not cheap like the ones in NYC. A wash and set down here is between $25 and $35. My friend pays almost $40 in DC. My AA stylist charged $30 for a wash and set. Now that I'm natural I only pay $40 for a wash, blow dry and flat iron.

ETA: IDK where y'all live that you're seeing ghetto hairstyles all the time. I live in Baltimore and we don't even wear that mess anymore. Most women I see out and about now have braids or weave. And not the ghetto Lil Kim weave of the 90s either.

If you're an upper class black elite, you'll know where to go.

...and it won't necessarily be the best quality salon. Being elite or upper class or whatever has nothing to do with having a gorgeous head of hair (real or fake). It's all about your stylist's skills and their ability to know what's right for each individual. Just because it costs more doesn't mean it's worth it.

My thread was not directed at you. I think I was still writing my post when you typed yours.

I have family in MD and it seems like they have some better AA salons down there than in CT. I believe there are more black people down there, too.

However, what I have noticed is that my hair looks like it naturally grows out of my scalp straight after a Dominican blowout. After I used to get my hair done at the AA salons, my hair looked like it was straightened and either heavy or limp. I've seen others like this too.

the stylist that I go to owns the salon. she is extremely professional, the salon looks like the type of salon that should be on beverly hills boulevard her clientele is not only AA but whites, asian's, hispanic ect. She is also a comestology instructor (so she HAS to get her CEU's) and a massage therapist. Her competiton is the upscale white salon across the street. She host color shows for joico , does news apperances. My girl is on top of her game. Her hair is looong and always done. Most of the girls including the one that I got the recommendation from hair is looong and healthy looking. She is not scissor- happy. and most important she LOVES hair and doing it and I ONLY pay 10 dollar more than I did at the Lower end salon that burned my hair and damn near pulled it all out and had me waiting for 3 HOURS because she over lapped clients. So they exisit it just may take some time finding them

I always thought the soft flowy hair started with the NY girls and their doobies....

ETA: When MD, DC, VA were doing wet wraps, the NY girls were rocking the soft and flowy...I went to Morgan State around 92ish so that was the first time I'd seen black girls with REAL long and flowy hair!

not just b/c i'm from ny....but i agree....since i was in JHS i used to get doobies while a few of the older girls would go to baltimore to get the freeze curls....the girls that lived in harlem were the ones who primarily went to the dominicans and got that bouncy finish, b/c thats where most of the dominicans lived...in the bx or uptown manhattan

Some of them have a private stylist and the stylist comes to them.

One of my stylist back in the day...had days when she went in the shop while it was closed to do a rich client's hair. She told me that most of them want you to come out to them. She said that most of them have a dressing room in there house designated to keeping up the doo....just think about it...the equipment is not that expensive if you have that kind of money. She said that one of her client was giving her anywhere from $100+ AS A TIP.. every time I think about that story I want to quit my job and go to cosmetology school. Just one head a day...thatz all I need.
