This is what my mother said to me when i showed her my BCed nape. She likes to tear me down alot...so this was no surprise.

I couldnt resist i had to do something i was just dying to. so i BCed the nape area. I re-wet it..put some gel and ran and showed my mother my cute bouncy little curls!! ..... her response was..... "o :look:......it looks like pubic hair.."

I said "well i'd rather have pubic hair then to have a big ole shiny bald spot glistening for all to see.."... @ that she walked away :lachen:

My mother is not black. She is 100% puerto rican and has 3b spirals naturally...HOWEVER...she has NEVER worn her hair in it's natural state. For years she burns the heck out of it 2-3x a week to get it bone straight. This is why her hair is now thinning with a bald spot.

Maybe she's anti-curls.....which would explain why she got my hair relaxed when i was 8 or so! :wallbash:

*sigh*.... i mean seriously.....WTF?!

Sorry to hear that. Maybe your mother is just jealous. Ignore her tearing you down, I see my mother on a daily basis and she always tears me down for something, I just ignore her.

PUBIC HAIR???? Good gawd!!:perplexed Wonder what she'll say next upon seeing it actually grow out beautifully. But either way it goes, you know you got us on here for support, no doubt about that!

OK....

You win the craziest mother award!

As much as my mom works my nerves, I can't imagine her ever saying anything like that to me.

She also made me wait until I was 13 to get a relaxer. She had no problems with my natural hair--until I was an adult and cut it all off and went natural (but that's another story).

my mother makes little offhanded comments like this to me sometimes. don't take it to heart; just picture the look on her face when your hair's long enough to smack her in the face with it (by accident, of course!)

but.. um... why'd you BC just your nape? did you have nape issues, too?

nope... no problems lol.

I really wanted to see what my texture would look like without the relaxed hair weighing it down. I chose the nape because it has the least amount of relaxed hair left to it ( about an inch or 2).

I wanna BC badly. My goal was 18 months. This coming sunday will make 12 months. Im still sitting here pondering whether i should cut the rest off or not. lol. i dont think i have the guts..

I am sorry that your mother made that ignorant comment. Do you think that she did it out of jealousy? I ask because you said that she's Puerto Rican, and from my limited understanding of Hispanic cultures in the Caribbean, natural hair is frowned upon (in fact, there was a thread about it last summer, about the rise in Dominican salons and the cultural/historical roots of it). Regardless of what motivated her she was wrong for that. :nono: And LOL at what you said back to her! :lachen:

Oh My Gawd! I think I would of said " I love you mom, but I was this close to slapping you". Just kidding but .....Wow!!! :nono:

Good come back. I can't believe your mother said that to you. I bet your curls are beautiful. Just ignore your mother, my mom lives with me and I have to ignore her on a constant basis.

My mother is the exact same way. We are mixed w/ all different types of cultures and her hair is significantly different in every way than mine. When I did my first big chop in 2001 she flat out told me that I looked like a boy - like Kobe Bryant to be exact. I was so crushed and disheartened about being natural. But I stuck with it for better or for worse. Now seven years later she has a bald spot on her crown that her stylist put there by over processing and aggressive flat ironing. I suggested she go natural because her hair is so soft and fine and she has always suffered from chemical damage as long as I've known her. But she feels that the appearance of her hair is completely dependent on chemicals (relaxers, and dye). At this point in the road I am happy w/my TWA. It looks good on me at 26 and I hope it will look good on me at 56 - if that's how I want to wear it then too. (Not trying to hijack this thread into a natural v. relaxed debate, I promise ) But sometimes mothers don't know what's best even though they think they do.

Maybe it's a PR thang. My PR co-worker has a beautiful daughter with 3b curls. She has such a hard time dealing with her hair and gets so frustrated even trying. She told her 11 year old daughter that her hair looked like pubes too:blush: Now that can scar a child for life!!!
