I just got back from Mr. Johns Hair Clinic in Detroit MI.

I scheduled a consultation there, and I must say I was very impressed. The shop was very organized, clean, and the staff was very professional.

(I thought it was very cute how they themed their salon, it was set up to look just like a doctors office, the staff even wore lab coats. It was so cute!)

Anyway, they were right on time, little to no wait time. I got called in right away. The proprietor, Mr. John, talked to me about my hair. Within 5-10 mins of the conversation he pinpointed exactly what I was doing to my hair, without me even telling him. He was able to tell that I was flat ironing and wrapping my hair all too often (which is true ) and he gave me some tips on matinence and care. He told me that probably in 6 months I would be able to reach my goal. (I didn't tell him that my goal was tailbone though LOL)

Out of the whole experience, I only took issue with one thing he said (and this is rare, because most of the time when i go into a salon the "Issue taking" countdown starts as soon as I walk in the door.) What he said was that he tries to keep moisture out of his clients hair, and that natural styling damages the hair.... Wait... thats two things isnt it? Ok yeah so I only took issue with two things he said.

But overall every thing else he said was very true, and seemed to make sense. He showed me photos of his clients hair and most of the photos I saw were women with jaw dropping MBL hair. So, I have to say that I was impressed overall.

I was so impressed, I made an appointment to get my hair done tomorrow morning at 8am. Ill make sure that I post photos and updates then. If I like what he does, Ill probably keep going back... if not then at least it wont have hurt to try it out and see for myself.

Yea, please let me know too. I am looking for someone to trim off the necessary and not give me a cut. I just got 2 inches cut today and my ends only needed a dusting. I wanna be prepare and find someone I can trust with my hair, lol. Can you pm my with the address and phone number?

I will! He says he trims once every 6 months and he only dusts. He said that I wouldn't even notice that he had trimmed and that he doesn't believe in "evening the hair up" he says that if you leave your hair alone, it will even itself up.

I'm not sure who she is. The website I found her on just says that she is a Bishari girl. Bisharis are a tribal group in northern Africa which some experts believe to be the original peoples of Egypt.

I just thought she was pretty.

UPDATE TIME:

So yesterday I went. I arrived at the salon, and they made me fill out "paperwork". (one was a release form saying that If I got awesome results I would let him and his salon use my photos for publicity )

I then was taken back to a wash room, where they doused my hair with some stuff that clearly had rubbing alcohol in it because it hit my nose like a fire engine, this was apparently to "clarify" my scalp and hair. With this stuff still on, they then wrapped my hair in a towel and let it sit for a few min. The shampoo person then washed me with the most amazing smelling shampoo I have ever smelled before (she wouldn't tell me what it was though) and then gave me a protein treatment.

While the treatment was on she sat me in a chair and turned on this lamp with three red light bulbs (you know the kind they use to heat things up under at cafeterias? Yeah.... those kind) Apparently this was to heat up my hair so that the treatment could work... But when I asked I was given some run of the mill "Its a special treatment designed to penetrate your hair...." Im like "yeah right those are some Mo' F'in light bulbs with red plastic on them."

As Im sitting there I began to notice that all of the employees there had short hair. Im thinking to myself, Man if the people that WORK here cant get long hair.... what the heck am I supposed to expect? Im the client coming there for the first time, and my hair is longer than anybodies in the room???? Including the employees who supposedly all follow his regimen?

Anyway, so about 2-5 mins later (it seemed like forever) I was taken out of the chair and the woman SHAMPOOED the conditioner out of my hair. Put some kind of leave in cream into it, and raked through my hair with a pick. I asked to see the pick because I could FEEL my hair popping and snapping, and she vehemently denied that there was any hair on the pick... of course when she showed it to me voila..... there was hair on it.

Anyway then came the blow dry which I must say I was impressed with, the air used to dry my hair was warm.... but not hot. And they were very gentle with the blow out.

I then was taken to a waiting room where I waited to get pressed. I had a conversation with a lady there who had neck length and very thin hair about her hair. She told me that when she first started coming he hair was doing well but that recently it had started to thin and break... Which scared me. However she attributed it to medications she was taking so I left it at that.

A few mins later I was taken to a room where I was to have my hair pressed. As soon as I walked in I could smell that the room stank of burned hair and sure enough in the corner was a little stove and about 6 different smoldering hot combs. I sat down in the char and expressed tot he woman who was going to press my hair that I was relaxed and it would not be safe to use too much heat in my hair etc etc,

she says to me, "If you can curl your hair with a curling iron you can press your hair..."

Im like: "Yeah but the curling irons that you buy from the store don't smoke because they are so hot."

She literally got an attitude with me and said "Well I hope that you would continue to come back to us, because I have had ladies that would stop coming because they were questionable of our techniques and they had to come back because their hair got jacked up when they didn't come back to us! And we have been in the business for over 20 years and we know what we are doing"

I figured I should probably squash that right away, and said to her, in essence that I didnt appreciate the "scare tactics" (i.e. If you dont come to us your hair will fall out) and that she really shouldn't be upset about me asking questions because Ive had MY hair on MY head for over 20 years... and I have been taking care of it all this time, and that I have a right to ask questions.

So after the press out, I got trimmed (which was only a dust ) and he curled my hair, and took a photo.

After that I scurried my little behind out of there as fast as I could.

I think Im going to go back to taking care of my own hair. I think I can do better on my own.

I actually did not have a picture.... But I can take one now if you like. Its still.... relatively in good condition. It was a press so as soon as I went to sleep the edges got frizzy.

I used to go to Mr. John's when I was little. I was natural then. They don't perm, they only press hair. I think its best for naturals because their intentions are to eventually cut off all the relaxed hair. They do a lovely job, but they do use a lot of heat and it takes forever to be seen. I'd schedule my appointment and wouldn't be seen for 45mins to 1.5hrs. It's crazy like that. I wouldn't waste my time going if you are relaxed but if you are trying to transition and you like having straight hair, it does help. When my 2nd granny started going she had extemely damaged nape length relaxed and colored blond hair. Buy two years she had completely natural, beautiful MBL hair. I wouldn't go tho because it takes forever and its expensive.

He is a pro-natural guy. I went to him many years ago. I dont recall seeing any relaxers there in the office. WHen I went originally I had some relaxer in my hair and was adviced to grow it out. Over all i liked my experience there. Professional atmosphere,and knowledgable about hair, but like you Ambermoon I didnt like his no moisture ideas and weekly appointments he stressed.

For me, I was pleased with just about everything except the way that they handled my hair during the shampoo/condition/comb out.

They were super, super rough.

Also, you had to wait forever and they were very expensive.

Their products were very good. I wish I knew what was in them. They kept them in plastic, no label bottles.

I would still go back if they used TLC with my hair.

There was no comb attachment, however they did use a bristle/peg brush combination to bush it out as it was being blasted by the air.

Yes, he does believe in Straight hair. They are very against wearin natrual styles. they believe that it traps moisture on the scalp and that it is the moisture that causes hair loss. He showed me photos of this supposed "hair loss from moisture" and it looked to me like very typical examples of alopecia.

Thats how I felt. I was very impressed with their professionalism and how nice they were initially. But then when I actually went through the process, I just didn't feel the techniques were for me. Personally.

Also, the weekly appointment thing was just nonsense. Especially since he considers my hair to be "Long" and I would have to pay the long hair price. To his credit though He did offer me a discount provided I did make weekly appointments. However, It just didnt make much sense to me, when I figured out the price for a month in my head.

I agree. They were not gentle at all. I watched them rake a pick through other ladies hair and I was cringing the whole time.

i used to go to mr. john years ago, when the dad was alive. now i mostly do my own hair, which are in braids. however, when i get my hair press i go to one of is ladies who uses the same technique to blow, press, and clip your ends. and she doesn't charges alot. if anyone what her name it's glenda and her number is 313-864-1118 and i never wait. she makes her appointments so that when lady is done another lady is coming in to her hair done. and my hair is bsl and i'm natural. o yea, she does hair in her home, west side of detroit.
