How long did it take you to get out of the "awkward" stage?

It feels like I've been at that stage for ever! I just want to know if that's a phase that we all go through? or is it just me?

its not just you! I've been stuck at barely grazing SL for a while now. Seems like its never going to grow past that. I've been keeping my hair in cornrows so i don't think about it too much

I believe its a phase that most ladies must endure. I have been hovering between SL and APL for more than 6 months. My advice is to just keep your hair out of sight and/or up in protective styles.

If you obsess over it, you may be tempted to cut...and that just defeats your whole purpose:nono:

Hang in there!

I was in one of those phases from May until about last month. I transitioned and cut my texlaxed ends off in May and my hair looked like a mushroom for a while, but it finally hit a decent length and now falls better.

I'm also stuck in the "awkward" stage, hovering between SL and APL. I'm hoping to be able to reach APL by June (taps foot impatiently). Hopefully all of the bootcamping I've been doing will help.

I'm hating this stage. I'm trying to keep my hair up in curly rollersets so I won't kno the true length of my hair :( ...until I update my fotki...in February... but I know I'm jsst a newbie so this will take time but ugh...:ohwell::ohwell: ...I hope I'm APL by June or July

I heard APL is the hardest stage to acquire...then it gets easier...I hope so!:perplexed

I am also in an awkaward stage...

I am somewhere between SL AND APL and my hair does not fall correctly...so for now I am putting my hair up a lot :look:

I hope to reach APL at the end of March :yep:

Count me there as well. It seems stuck between (like most of you ladies) shoulder and APL! I know this is like one of the hardest humps to get over, but out of sight, out of mind and it'll surprise you once you take it down!

I'm still stuck at an awkward stage, not because of the length of my hair, but because of the damage it's sustained. One side is really pretty. The other side was burned severely, so it's broken off and thinned. I know it's going to take me at least 18 months to totally get rid of all the damage and get out of this awkward stage, so I'll just take a seat in the back and watch you ladies GROW-A-HEAD!!!

:lachen::lachen::lachen: Ahhhh, the mushroom. My arch nemesis. Boy have we shared some good months :lachen:

I've been stuck like chuck for awhile between SL and APL so I am hair-hibernating in a wash n' go til the end of my countdown ticker. I suspect I will be happily surprised because when my hubby did the "pull/stretch test" he said my hair is pretty long but I refuse to look for myself (read: flatiron) right now. :look:

dam, is that what you all call it???? :wallbash::perplexed:yep::lachen:

in defense of mushrooms..........at least their shape is perfect. i mean their gills weren't sticking up and out or hanging high on one side and low on the other

I just joined the club...for me the hardest thing was getting past SL - I stayed right there FOREVER...hopefully now that I'm past it I'll get to APL more quickly.

Darn! I'm at neck length STILL(scissors). You mean I'm gonna be in an awkward stage for the next YEAR??!!

Oh man... I'm glad I'm not the only person. I think I suffer midly from hair-anorexia. It's never long enough for me... Well, at least my sister (caribeandiva) thinks so.

Some days I think I'm in the awkward stage, some days I think I'm just too impatient and want my hair to do stuff it ain't long enough to do yet.

Either way, I'm putting it away, and letting it grow til I have to change things up....

:ohwell: Dang!! I am trying to keep hope alive....I hope that that dayum awkward curse dont bring her arse over here cause Imma beat her down!! :boxing:

This is the first time I have really thought or wanted my hair to grow and I refuse to let anything stand in the way!!

Come on ladies, we need a moment of silence and a prayer to the hair angel :angel:that we all move on to our hair goal!! :locks:

Well considering I got a significant portion chopped off in november i.e. neck length..I definitely consider myself to be in an awkward phase....my hair was driving me insane b/c basically all I could wear that looked cute was flexy rod sets. :wallbash: Especially b/c my hair is so short in the back and is FULL of NG - it looks like a jungle back there...now I'm just ignoring length and keeping my hair cornrowed and hidden under wigs. So far it's working and it's keeping my hands out of my hair. Hopefully when I relax it in April it will be longer and less annoying then. However if it's not then about 6 weeks post I'm just gonna braid it up and keep ignoring it until I get the length I want

I have been at the awkward stage twice. The first time when I was relaxed and stayed stuck about a half a inch above BSL for months and then the second time has been lately when I've been stuck about an inch above APL for what seems like forever due to a set back and major trim. I could have been past APL by now.

Yup, me too...between past SL and APL. I hate this as well. However I did learn a valuable lesson from a setback that I had. I was focusing on growth too much once I got my hair healthy again. Now that I learned my lesson that both health and length is an on going battle that both needs my attention...I know I will succeed in 2008.

APL for ME is a super big hurdle because I am tall and have a long neck. Right now my current length is about 15 inches from root to ends and I am NOT APL yet, so that tells ya. :perplexed
Anyways I think by June 08 I will be out of the awkward stage and then by Dec 2008 I should be 100% full APL no doubts no matter how I tilt my head.

I feel stuck between bra strap length and waist length. I'm hoping that by eliminating heat as much as possible, I'll be able to reach waist length by the end of the year.

So what do you ladies mean by "awkward".
I'm using it to mean a stage that it is hard to style. I imagined it would be over once I reached SL :ohwell:

I guess to some, the meaning includes that, and also includes that weird length that is in between one milestone to the next. Not quite neck length. In between neck and shoulder..In between shoulder and APL. In between APL and BSL, etc.

Haha, it does get easier at SL. :) You can just pull it back/pin it up, etc.

Uh, I was wondering the same thing. I thought the ackward stage was when you are right above or at shoulder and your hair does that weird bend because it's on your shoulders. Does the hair not lay down right in the SL to APL stage?

Awkward to me is between shoulder length and A.P.L... I really can't do much with it.

Ladies please don't be discouraged I started out with nl hair 2 years ago and just know made APL.
I was just a few inches from APL in my first year when I chopped it all of b/c my hair looked like the infamous mushroom.
I would not do it again b/c I eventually doubted my ability to grow hair b/c everyone else surpassed me but I finally made it and I got very fragile fine hair so if I can make it you can too:yep:
