Ok so my mom got me a CHI for Christmas, but it is the one that only has one setting. So I've washed and deep conditioned and now I'm about to start the process and I'm scared that the setting may be too high...Does anyone have any thoughts? Should I wait until tomorrow and go back and get the one with multiple settings or should I be fine with the one setting CHI...(btw this is my first time staightening since going natural so I'm a little nervous:perplexed) I need thoughts quick! lol I'm sitting here with wet hair

Quick **advice...I hate when things are spelled wrong! lol

Re: Quick avice before I do something stupid...Naturals who use a "one setting" flat

I'm not natural, but I have the Chi with only one setting too. At first, I was nervous about using it because it does get HOT. But, the thing is, just make sure you only swipe it once or maybe twice if you have to, but do so kinda quick. You don't want to do it slow and have your hair frying. Also, just make sure that your hair is well conditioned before using it. If not, then it's going to turn out a dry crispy mess. Good luck. Hopefully some naturals will chime in to help.

Thanks!! I think I may just be patient and sit on the steps of ULTA tomorrow morning and go get the multiple settings although I read another thread about heat setting and the CHI is about 300-350 so I may be ok...any other opinions?

Re: Quick avice before I do something stupid...Naturals who use a "one setting" flat

I'm transitioning -- not fully natural. But I use the Chi and so does my mother who is natural. It gets hot but works really well. You have to be quick like CutiePie says. I make sure to dry my hair really well and have it completely detangled. Then take it in very small sections and run a comb and then the iron through each section as quickly as possible. I find that with the Chi I don't need a lot of multiple passes.

Personally I am afraid of one setting irons, I need to adjust the temp b/c my hair turns white(ashy looking) when its too hot...I can't see how CHI would have one setting and assume its ok for everyone's hair. Don't risk it.

Good point Raven. I also make sure to comb through each section before I flat iron it. That way, you can make sure that all the hair is detangled and that your hair will be silky smooth when you finish. I personally think you should be fine with it though, especially if relaxed heads can use it, if used correctly, and not suffer damage. I agree with Raven, it is a good flat iron.

Re: Quick avice before I do something stupid...Naturals who use a "one setting" flat

Well if this helps you at all...I have the chi turbo which goes to 350 and even on the highest setting I dont feel its quite hot enough for my texlaxed hair to get straight without reverting. With trial and error it works now (chi silk infusion does the trick)...but I do use two passes...the last time it lasted all week and I was happy with that. Im assuming natural hair would need a little more heat to get straight anyway so I think the setting would be fine.

I know a lot of relaxed heads with thick, healthy hair that use the one setting chi or other irons and it doesnt damage it. Just make sure u use a heat protectant before you blow dry and u may wanna use a few more drops before ironing it. And move as mentioned above.

Re: Quick avice before I do something stupid...Naturals who use a "one setting" flat

Are you guys flat ironing your hair after air dying or blow drying?

Re: Quick avice before I do something stupid...Naturals who use a "one setting" flat

My chi only has one setting also. I have used it with no prob on my natural hair many times. I only do one quick pass though and get good results (you can check my fotki).

I don't usually have the patience to fully air-dry. I'll either towel-dry or air-dry partially, then blow-dry on low and then flat iron. Also, my hair doesn't always dry well when I air-dry it and I find more breakage if I try to flat iron or even comb after it has been air-dried.

Thanks Raven...

I agree with Sade, you should be patient and wait to ge the one with different settings. Considering this is your first time straighten your hair, you might find out that you hair doesn't require a lot of heat. Patiences is a virtue. Let us know what you decide.

I rollerset mine first. I usually only sit under the dryer for a little while 30 mins. and then let the rest airdry overnight. I get the best results this way.

Re: Quick avice before I do something stupid...Naturals who use a "one setting" flat

That's a good idea...are you sleeping with the rollers?

Yes, I sleep with them. I just put a net over the rollers when I'm done, sit under the dryer, and then put an oversized scarf over the rollers and go to bed. I wake up in the morning and I might have to sit under there for another 20 minutes or so. It seems when I just sit under the dryer the whole time, my hair doesn't seem to turn out as soft. But I think that it's my dryer :ohwell:.

I rollerset first too....Im dry in 40 to 45 minutes under my pibbs. But I rarely ever flat iron and actually prefer to rollerset and wrap. I flat ironed for my graduation a week or so ago and I wont be doing it again for a while....it looked then and I missed the body lol. I couldnt wait to wash it so my texture would come back.

Thanks!! I'm not really sure how to do all that on the fotki:perplexed

Gorgeous hair!!! What do you do before u flat iron?

Re: Quick avice before I do something stupid...Naturals who use a "one setting" flat

I say return/exchange it, better safe than sorry.

Re: Quick avice before I do something stupid...Naturals who use a "one setting" flat

Take it back! With those types of irons, the longer it's on, the hotter it will get. It's just like using a marcel/stove iron. You can't control the temperature.

Re: Quick avice before I do something stupid...Naturals who use a "one setting" flat

I was naughty and I used it for a length check:spank:....I reverted though whew!!! I went and got the FHI today with multiple temps so yay! Thanks for all of your advice...by the way the one setting CHI is on sale at ULTA for $99 if anyone is interested
