First let me start by apologizing for asking what is most likely a question that has been asked and answered many, many times.

Could someone(s) answer a couple of questions that searching by "clarify, clarifying and stretch" are not finding.

1) What is 'clarifying' your hair to reduce product build up? Please share a few products I can purchase.

2) What is the correct process for "stretching" your perm? I know everyone is different, and their hair is different, but I need a good example of how to do this so I don't have more shedding than necessary?

I'm concerned about shedding (like everyone here) because I've gone by the rule of 'the average person sheds 15-20 strands a day' but beginning to see that's not true.:wallbash:

ps..It's annoying to arrive late to an event, because things have already started and in full swing by the time you stroll in. Now everyone has to take time and catch you up.:nono:

...Thank you ALL for catching me up - each time I arrive at a post 11 pages late.

ok ....I never stretched b4 but I love Nexxus Aloe Rid Clarifying Shampoo...I clarify once a month.

when i stretched i tried to go for low/no manipulation hair styles so that i wouldn't be exposing my hair to a lot of tension. i did this by wearing lacefronts a lot.

Oh Yeah when I clarify I follow up immediately with Moisturizing Shampoo then Deep condition that way my hair doesn't get dry from clarifying.

Since I'm just starting out, I wondered if it would 'dry' since I'm assuming a part of the process is stripping - so the trick is moisturizing shampoo...

Humm...Could I add a drop or two of eo to the clarifying shampoo, or does that defeat the purpose of clarifying?:Blush2:

clarifying is removing product build up with poo or other products- some use clarifying poo, chelating poo or good old baking soda.
I use a organic root stimulator creamy aloe poo or organic root stimulator neutralising poo (professional formula) same ingredients in the two- its a chelating shampoo that removes both surface and deep build up- i find it less stripping than clarifying poo.
swimmer's shampoo are other examples of chelating poo.

In terms of stretching- I will say get you regimen sorted first.THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.
for me, I have to increase use of hair strengthener (protein or herbs) as i stretch to keep demarcation line strong.
Also low manipulation- only detangle twice a day on wash days, I usually dont comb in btw.
Tying satin scalf on hair to air dry really helps to keep it laying flat, and also at night.
I also give myself a break by wearing wigs, will be trying braids soon as well ( i havent had braids since taking care of my hair properly).
If you check my siggy am currently 18wks post going for 30 wks, may be 44wks if i can.
there is also a relaxer support thread that is good, if you want to stretch. Try and stretch gradually, may be 1-3wks each time, so its not to much for you at a time.

If you have hard water it is important to use a clarifying shampoo that chelates. Chelating= contains a molecule that binds to the mineral/metal ions that deposit onto our hair coming from the hard water, so it can be rinsed away. If you have hard water, and you notice your hair is dry, tangly and hard to keep moisturized, you will see a major difference when using a chelating shampoo. I use Ion Hardwater shampoo from Sally's and I believe Kenra makes one that is really good but I've never tried it. HTH.
