Dusting!

you just take small sections of your hair and look for the split ends within those small sections. Once you locate them you just clip those split ends. I dust with a side lamp and mirror, so i can really see what im doing.

How do I do it?!? I refuse to get another trim everytime I get a relaxer. I just want to do it myself!

I know right! DAMN!!!!!!!

To them it's all about getting more out of their commision but really you don't need it!!!

I don't know.. I have yet to get a trim or dust. I'm terrified to do it on my own but I would like to know as well!!!

I haven't trimmed my hair in about 8 months. Thankfully I don't need to yet either, but I would love to know how to properly dust.

:yep:@ ebony

yeah.

I guess you have to be super concentrated on what you're doing. I would just be afriad of clipping the same pieces of hair twice, or having a section I've already dusted get in the way and i hack it off accidently

I would also have to dust after a relaxer b/c my hair does not stay straight on its own after washing.

Are you guys able to keep your hair even this way? I try to dust but some hairs have more splits then others and it ends up uneven (although it grows that way alittle already)....any advice?
BTW - for the newbies - dust and S & D are two different things

I fixed my stylist this time. My t-up was Saturday and while she rinsed out my conditioner I told her "You know I really want a roller set." What was she going to do trim me while I was wet? I think not!!! I asked for a extra curly one too. I want to see my progress and take pictures before I get a trim.

Oh and dust with a reading lamp, mirror and a sharp pair of hair shears.

I am so tempted to dust before my next touch-up Jan. 10th. I wonder if my stylist would still try to dust my ends herself- just out of pure habit?

I think stylists are so used to relaxing and trimming that they just pick up the scissors and go whether you need it or not.

Why not just tell her straight 'I'm not getting my hair trimmed'? :perplexed

See all those hair sticking up? I indiscriminately cut them off by trimming everything perpendicular to the twist.

I just dusted my hair this week and the ends are so smooth, soft and tangle-free and I didn't lose any length.

Make sure you hold the scissors parallel so you don't cut off a loc.

Thats how the professionals at the long hair care salon in NYC do it...
