Nappy and Happy
Since starting my hair journey, I've never managed to stop my hair breaking :wallbash:

Even going from fully relaxed to texturized hasn't stopped it.

When curly, my hair is grazing my shoulder, but too short for buns/ponies. Straight, my hair is the right length for ponies/buns/protective styles, but I can't straighten too often because flat-ironing (even just touching it, really :nono:) leads to a carpet of hairs on my floor!

I can't figure if I need more protein or moisture. When my hair is wet it's weak and mushy and it stretches too much. But when dry, my hair snaps right in half if I pull it on either end.

I've recently changed my staples to include more protein:

Aubrey GBP: deep conditioning (previously used Kenra and Humectress)

Giovanni Direct: leave in (my staple leave-in for 2 years)

Rusk Sensories Calm: co-washing (started this 2 months ago. Contains Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hair Keratin Amino Acids, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein as the 5th, 6th, and 7th ingredients)

ORS Olive Oil: daily moisturizer (I've always used this but I'm looking to switch it out).

Porosity Control: use it whenever I co-wash or deep condition (been using this more than 2 years).

I've only been using these as my staples for the past couple months, but still my hair is breaking.
I'm thinking of upping my protein even more by switching my beloved Giovanni for Salerm21.

Otherwise, I have no clue where I'm going wrong. :perplexed

Years ago, I had that problem after dying my hair with a permanent dye.
Joico K - Pak reconstructor saved my hair.

I'd use it once a week for the first month, then every two weeks for about 3 months after that. It worked.

doesn't that mean your hair is too porous? if the protein isn't working maybe try a porosity shampoo (or ACV rinse) then restart using your conditioners and protein

My hair doesn't break. I might find a few on my hands when I'm detangling, but other than that I only see shed hairs. My hair was also very porous (porosity control and ACV didn't fix it). My problem was with my hair's protein/moisture balance was off. Turns out I needed very light protein used very often and moisture most of the time. SistaSlick as a great article about correcting porosity with protein/moisture. It worked like a charm!

Here are some other things that helped me end breakage...

ETA: Mushy hair is a symptom of moisture overload and it can cause breakage as quickly as protein overload. :yep:

I'm no expert, but it sounds like you may need a heavier protein treatment to strengthen your limp strands. Try Nexxus Emergencee: Shampoo hair, rinse and lightly towel blot excess water. Apply just enough emergencee to coat hair, concentrating on problem spots like ends. Sit under a warm/hot dryer without a cap until hair hardens. Rinse emergencee out of hair and follow with a moisturizing deep conditioner. Rinse and style as usual.

Emergencee shouldn't be used probably more than twice a month, IMO, but if you continue with lighter protein treatments in between (followed with moisturizing conditioners, of course) then twice should definitely turn your hair around in a month. HTH!

I've been trying very hard to find Joico. It's the difficult thing to find. Where have others found this product? I'll try Sally's tonight.

Hey! Sally's does have the generic version I think....but its a salon name brand so u will have to look at trade secret, ulta, jcpenney salon, etc.

I'd say you need moisture moisture moisture.

also, while it's curly and too short for buns why not pin it up into a cute lil style or something.

I will have to try some Joico-k pak because i can only stop breakage by wearing protective styles.

I can't remember who suggested using a protein conditioner w/ heat, as a pre-poo, but it has totally stopped my shedding/breakage. I usually use Optimum's Hi-Tech Reconstructer or DuoTex and sit under my heat cap for about 30min. Then, I rinse and wash/CW, oil rinse, and finally, Silk Elements' Cholesterol. When I detangle my hair, I have little to no hairs in my pick and the wet comb out yields the same results--little to no hair loss.

I do this once or twice a week and my hair is always soft and moisturized. I recently tried amla oil with my protein conditioner pre-poo and my hairline, which is usually brittle after air drying, was SOFT until I washed it again. HTH.
