Hi girls!

I talked with a new stylists today named Sherlonda. She was reccomended by one of the ladies on the board, and she works at Pretty Lady Hair in LA. We discussed the strengths and areas of opportunity of my hair and I set an appointment for Dec. 2. However, I may call and cancel depending on what my research yields.
So here are my questions/concerns:

1. She said that uses a relaxer by a company named Violet and that she's been using it for 7-8 years. Has anyone ever used this relaxer? I had heard of some of their other products, but I didn't know they made relaxers. I'm a little skeptical about trying out a new brand of relaxer after stretching for umpteen week. Any reviews or knowledge on this brand???

2. I explained that I wanted to follow up with a protein/reconstructor of some sort 2-3 weeks later so that my hair would be nice and strong before I left. She asked why I wanted to do that, and I explained that it was something I had done the past few times I had gotten a relaxer and it kept my hair from shedding after the relaxer. My strands have a tendency to rain out of my head right after a relaxer so if I did deep moisturizing conditions 3 or 4 times before I did the reconstructor, I should be straight...right?

3. Has anyone ever gone to this chick? I can't remember who suggested her b/c I read this rec a few months ago and added it to my database of stylists

4. Do any of the LA ladies have ANY suggestions for a healthy hair stylist who knows how to properly apply a relaxer to a LOT of new growth and who won't chop my hair off????

Sorry this is so long...any feedback would be very greatly appreciated.

Hey Divine,

I've never heard of this relaxer but I can suggest someone for you. I've never posted their information before for the following reasons:

1) She is expensive - (I think relaxers start at 125, washes 75)
2) She is rather slow
3) She is likely to devistate you if you let her clip your ends, and she charges about 30 dollars extra to clip them.

HOWEVER - with that said, when I was permed, my hair was the HEALTHIEST it had ever been. I mean HEALTHY!!!!!!

She does not style, she'll just have your hair shining and flowing in the wind for sure. She's not a jealous hair dresser because her own hair is past waist length. Everyone in the salon has BSL hair and longer. She does steamer conditioning, roller sets and wraps your hair with plastic wrap after she styles you. Think about it and if you want more information, let me know.

My BIL in San Diego is a hairdresser and uses this relaxer. He recently applied it to my sister's hair and it was fine. Her hair is texturized and short. He offered it to me, but I refused and decided to stick with my Affirm. I don't think the relaxer is bad, but if you are squeamish about a change do what makes you feel most comfortable. They also have a line of styling products which I allowed him to use on my hair. It came out quite nice, but I still would not switch to the relaxer because Affirm is what I know works for my hair.

I say "go for what you KNOW". My last stylist began using a relaxer on my hair that I had never heard of named Epitomi. Over time it seemed to just melt my hair away, leaving me with SEVERAL bald spots that are just now growing back in. I can't say for sure that the relaxer caused this, but from now on I am only going to use (and let stylists use) products that I know something about. Having said that, my last relaxer (PhytoRelaxer II) was one that I had never heard of before coming to this board, BUT....there were so many ladies here that recommended it that I went for it. The stylist said that she had been using Violet for 7-8 years, so it is not a new product. It seems in that amount of time, if it were a good product, it would have more of a following or at least some kind of positive "buzz". JMHO

Also....I wanted to say that I am looking for a good healthy hair stylist in the Los Angeles area too.

I recently stretched my relaxer to 20 weeks and for some unknown reason I decided that i could relax 2"-3" of 4b newgrowth myself. :ohwell: I had never relaxed my own hair....I had never even thought of relaxing my own hair before. But after being on LHCF and being inspired by all the very smart and empowered women who self-relax and have absolutely GORGEOUS hair, I said to myself "You can do it girl!!" Well all I can say is that I have a head full of underprocessed hair.  It was my fault though, because London Diva, Southern Girl and others have EXCELLENT instructions on self-relaxing, but I was hard-headed and decided I could do it without doing it in sections and I just couldn't get through it all in time. The good news is that my hair wasn't damaged by this and I'm going to try it again, but for right now I am looking for someone who can help...er...correct the mess I've made.

Browndilocks I'd be VERY interested in the stylist that you mentioned, so if you could PM me with the information, I would be very grateful.

I just started going to a new stylist, since mine recently passed away. She used the V-Violet products including relaxer on my hair. My hair is the straightest and healthiest it has ever been. It doesn't seem too thin as it used to. I was skeptical because I always used Affirm too, but I really like this relaxer. It seems to be widely used in Southern California.

I just looked up the products online. They look good. I will have to buy some sample sizes.
