Anyone experiencing ITCHY, SORE, IRRITATED scalp from using Indian shampoos and/or Oils? Try CLARIFYING and reducing your frequency.

I went through really bad itching. My scalp was hurting really bad. No, this was not growth spurts! I felt irritation bumps begin to form. After going back and forth with my hair buddy (Shout out to Serenity_Peace) and testing it out, we discovered that the mineral oil in some of the Indian products is the likely culprit.

I just wanted to draw your attention to any possible reactions. I also realize not everyone may experience this.

HHG....smooches!

Wow, could ya'll be allergic to MO? Were you applying directly to your scalp?
My hair loves MO, but I've never put it on my scalp.

After all this Ayurveda frenzy, I was just waiting for someone to post something like this. I had a terrible allergic reaction to amla powder months ago that lasted forever just using it once. You gotta be careful with these products and make sure you test them on your skin first. Another LHCF'er (I know her name but don't want to call her out) had a horrible reaction to a certain brand of henna. She had to go to the Emergency Room and was under a doctor's care until her reaction subsided, but she was in terrible pain and had bad swelling. Ladies please be careful and test your products beforehand. Just because they are natural doesn't mean you won't have a bad reaction. Also don't lump all your products together initially. Test them out one by one first. This is crucial in case you have a bad reaction and are trying to figure out where it came from. It will be hard to tell without subjecting yourself to another reaction if initially you use all your products mixed together. Also, generally you will not experience a bad reaction until the second use. So keep that in mind. Blessings!

Hi! Can you please tell me which brand of henna? I purchased some today and I want to make usre they're not the same. Thank you!

I've used Amla for awhile now as a pre-poo and haven't had any problems. When when I started doing oil rinses(thanks sareca) after conditioning and then oil my scalp with Vatika I started having problems. My hair was softer and more managable than ever but itched like crazy. Crazy me washed again and did the same thing. It got to the point where I was stratching my head and examining it in the mirror and having friends make sure nothing was crawling around up there:cry2:. It finally dawned on me that it was something I was using:wallbash:. So I washed and conditioned and only used the Vatika to seal and the itching has stopped!

I know a lot of ladies just got on the Ayurveda boat. The indian regime does wonders to your hair, but KEEP IT AWAY FROM YOUR SCALP. That itchying and irritation from your scalp is NOT GROWTH SPURT

I still use the oils but like Me2, I use strictly for sealing...NOT ON SCALP! If you have been using Indian oils on your scalp, I suggest clarifying. That will take care of the itching and remove the build up.

Sareca - I don't know if my hair likes Mineral Oil but now I know my scalp doesn't :nono:

Vatika gave me a rash on around my finger cuticles. However the reaction was not that bad and cleared up right away. I'll just write that off my list. I love amla and henna. Thank goodness I had not bad reactions to them.

The young lady had a bad reaction to Mumtaz Henna ....
I did too not as bad as she did but it left my scalp irritated:sad: like if u have that "ok it heating up " feeling from a relaxer :perplexed.. and left my hair a tangled dry matted mess. It has alot of green dye in it. Alot of times companies put green dye in the BAQ henna to make it "look" like its fresher compared to others.
I know Jamila is one of the ones that doesnt do that at all

I hear ya! Thanks for the warning. I'll make sure to keep it off my scalp. I use shikakai oil on my scalp all the time (at least once/week), but I make it at home from coconut oil.

Hey Sareca, how do you make it and do you use it to cleanse your scalp or what? Mine has MO in it but I really want to use it on my scalp as per Candy C's method:perplexed

Was this [plain red henna or was it black henna or or a henna blend that has ppd in i?

This is exactly why I don't use those oils. I use fresh powders or use my mortar and pestle and grind up the powders myself to make a paste/rinse/oil from.

And I hate to say it but that's where doing your research comes in. . . just because it's cheap in the store/online, or it's the first one you just happen to see, doesn't mean it's a good product. :perplexed

I make my own at home too and it is of course unscented. I heat up coconut oil (from the Islands) and add the powders and let sit for a couple of hours in the hot oil and then strain into a glass jar and I have Amla or whatever powder, coconut grease which I use as a prepoo. bonjour

Thank you WW! :kiss::kiss:

I had a discussion with my "Indian Boyfriend" at the market where I buy all my Ayurveda products. He told me that even most Indians/Pakistanis/Bangladeshis add the oils to both hair and scalp, but ONLY as a pre-poo, overnight or for a few hours. The oils are almost always washed out in the morning or after a few hours of using as a pre-poo.

Using the shikakai oil or others oils on the scalp is fine for those who don't have a problem with MO. (I think Candy_C is one of those.) I find that I can use shikakai oil and the oils from ReddTweetyB's Gro-Aut line on my scalp and have no problem. However, when I use Alma oil or others, I have an issue with irritated, itchy scalp.

You just gotta pay attention to how *your* hair reacts to these products. Do patch tests as well to be safe. :yep:

Good luck on your Ayurvedic journey, ladies. These products are great!! :clapping:

I had the same reaction when oil rinsing with Amla oil. My hair did not like it!

This is precisely why I only use a particular certified organic oil when I do scalp massages and I tested it out first. Mineral oil on my scalp is a no-no. I don't even use it on my hair. I love henna and I use Vatika on my hair (not scalp) from time to time. Long ago, when I first got interested in Indian oils and powders, I had concerns about what was in some of these products and set out to find mineral oil free, organic (if possible) oils and herbs. Like all products, it's important to use them with caution.

I agree I buy my own natural oils for my scalp and I just bought herbs to make my own herbal oil infusions

Thanks for the info, haven't had any problems but I've been switching over to the powders. Hope it works out for everyone.

Hmmmmm imma have to watch out for this. I've been having itchy scalp, but it never occured to me that it could be down to what i've been using.

I normally use amla as a pre-poo and vatika pretty much daily. I dont think my itching is down to that, but thanks for the heads up.

Could the reactions be due to the product(s) having set on the shelf past their recommended shelf life? All of mine have a best if used by date.

Maybe use of "fresh" said products wouldn't cause a reaction? IDK. Just a thought...

Be careful ladies and definitely conduct patch tests :yep:

HHG!

good thread

i always say shampoo at least every 4 weeks with a regular shampoo or ayurvedic shampoo bar

i have started to make my own brahmi shampoo bars they're great - swastik also have a brank, a popular shikakai soap

shampoo when you feel nessessary and start your ayurvedic regime once again

happy hair growing!

That was me when I began taking all my vitamins at the same time. I got the itchies like crazy with large welps all over my body. It took a good 6 months for me to stop scratching. :wallbash:

Shikakai oil makes me itch as well.

So far- no allergic reactions (Thank God)
You can make your own oils-by infusing powders in oil and slow heating in a mini crock pot .
I use 2 level tablespoons of shikakai powder to one cup of virgin coconut oil and after 4 hours and cooling and straining- I add a 1/2 cup of jojoba oil and put it in a spray bottle that I only put on my scalp. I also like a squirt or two of it in my Hair wash brew. After 9 years, I'm finding that my hair does not like straight oils. ( who 'da thunk it)

This happened to me too. My scalp was crazy sore. I made my own shikakia/ alma oil with coconut oil and the problem went away.
