Do you test products at the store before you buy?

When you buy a new product and you don't know the texture or whatever of the product and you want to open it and test it...is that wrong?

And does anyone else do this?

I do this but I was thinking about how I wouldn't want a whole bunch of people's fingers in my products before I buy them so maybe I should stop.

I know if I open like an oil product in a jar if I see finger prints across the top, I won't buy it.
 
If its stealin,I'm a bonafide theif.When,I purchase I always get the item closest to the back,though.:look:
 
IDK if I would consider it stealing but it's wrong. If you wouldn't buy one with somebody's fingerprints taken out of it, what makes you think somebody else would want to? Just something to think about...
 
I would discretly open a package to check it out in the store, but I don't think I would test the texture by dipping my fingers in it. I've brought home a jar or two with fingerprints/product missing, and gotten mad.

I would probably open a jar though to check to see if the item is okay and what it smells like.

I know. That's why I said I ought to stop.

But, there HAVE been times when I didn't buy a product because the texture wasn't right after I opened the jar.

I'd say that stealing has saved me a lot of money of products I otherwise would have thrown away. :perplexed

So I guess the thing to do is just buy it and deal with it if it's not what you want.
 
I do it. I have to open and smell everything and i TRY not to jam my finger in there or I try to just lightly pick up the product with my finger so i can check the consistency and rub it on my hands to see what it will look/feel like.

Most BSS don't let you return stuff or if they do, you only get like 3 days to do so and you get an exchange ONLY so if i'm gonna spend my money then i need to know what it smells, feels like before buying.

I think that all BSS should start doing like cosmetics stores and Bath & Body Works and dedicate ONE product as a TESTER. Just put a tester sign on it so that we CAN spray the oil sheen, spritz, get a dab of moisturizer, or oil and check it out w/o ruining all the bottles on the shelf.

Unfortunately, yes that's the answer. I may open and shake it around a bit but never touch...the thought of someone running over and scolding me for doing so is too much. Texture can fool you too. I did not like the :ohwell:semi-soft yogurty consistency of Capilo Honey/milk but it is a wonderful product even though kinda runny:yep:.
 
i test stuff some stuff out... generally i'm buying things in bottles so i don't have to wonder about someone else's fingers... i don't really buy a lot of stuff (now) where i could even tell if someone "tested" it before me...
 
I smell the stuff and if it's a product like a lotion, gel or oil, I will get just a bit our to see how it feels. If it's a jar of something I can leave fingerprint in, I won't (atleast I don't remember doing so) touch inside. BUT, you know what? If I did, it's called damaged goods and they get money back for that stuff anyway, so don't feel bad. I don't buy stuff with fngerprints in it. You know, most of the time, they'll take that fingerprinted jar and put it in the clearance bin.
 
That's part of the reason why I only buy my products from chain stores. If I don't like it, I take it back. I only go to the BSS if I absolutely have to. And that's usually to buy hair. Whatever's left after that I either try to use it up or give it away in the product swap at the LHCF meeting.

I am starting to do that to. I can't remember the last time I bought something from a traditional BSS
 
I never do it, i don't think it's fair on others who might pick it up, buy it and take it home only to realise somone has stuck their dirty finger in it.

I know people do it, so i always grab the one from the back and open it to see that it hasn't been tampered with.

I only go as far as looking and sniffing the product. Most of the time im buying something based on reviews, so hopefully i haven't bought something that is a waste.

Like others have mentioned it would make perfect sense to have testers.

I agree. I usually buy things based on recommendations. I have smelled things but that's it.

I really don't open things and stick my finger in to test unless it's a tester....BUT I open everything and smell it....that is a must for me ...I have to be able to tolerate the smell or else I can't put it in my hair.
 
I test products the smell and consistency(shake it around). I usually don't stick my hands in it bc 1.there are testers available and 2. If I don't like it....I'll return it anyway.
 
I'm a bit confused. If you mean do I try those "tester" items, usually lotions that stores like bath and body works put on tables (the ones with the stickers on them that encourage you to try them), then how is it stealing to use them? I try them.

However, if you're talking about taking a product that is not a tester that you are encouraged to try and is on the shelf for sale, then I think it's shady to dip your fingers in them and try them. I've never done that and I'm grossed out that others would. :perplexed
 
I voted yes, but i don't see what it feels like. I like to open products and smell them first before i buy them. But sometimes that still doesn't work because i remember when i bought wonder8 oil it was ok. But when i got home and added it to my hair the smell was sooo overwhelming(i was nauseated). But it's not a good idea to put your fingers in there especially if your not even gonna purchase it afterwards.:nono:
 
I prefer to ask for a sample, as I do with Aveda. That way I can take it home and really check it out before deciding to purchase.
 
Luckily it is getting increasingly difficult to test because they are placing seals over the openings and I am glad! I do like to open and smell, but mostly I'm checking to make sure Adequate's :lachen:or no one else's prints are in the jar. If so, of course I grab another one. If the item has a seal I'll buy it because it was probably something I read about here--pj.
 
I picked other. I do test the products, however I only test them if their are testers present. If there aren't then I usually look at the ingredients and see if I think the product will be good or not. Sometimes I will dip my fingertip into the product to get a feel of how moisturizing it is (if it is conditioner), and if it appeals to me (and the price is right:spinning:) I'll buy it.
 
I don't think it stealing but its not exactly right either I wouldn't use a product if I found out someone dipped their fingers in it. But if its something in a squeeze/pour bottle then its hard to tell if its been sampled.

I just buy the item if it dosen't work I give it away
 
I've gotten plenty of recommendations of products that work wonders on other members' hair, only to rush out to Ulta/Bed Bath & Beyond/etc, try it on mine, sadly realize it doesn't work for me, and take it back (the cool stuff y'all like tend to be PRICEY! :grin: Ain't no way I'll add that to my recently reorganized and cleaned cabinet when I can use that money on...hmm..."entertainment".) I wouldn't know if it would work on my hair just judging by its smell/texture/ingredients/etc. prior to purchase.

I've spent enough time working in retail accepting no-question returns, so I'm like "Why can't I? Shood..."). All the store will do is RTV (return it to vendor for credit) it anyway.:wallbash:
