where you discouraged?? because I am:ohwell:

Did you ever think, im never going to make it? Because I do :look:

What where you thinking, when you were SL,APL or whereever you started??

How and what kept you going?

Would you do it all over again if you could :look:

I'm not quite waistlength yet...but close. I've changed my goals a few times because I didn't think I would make it. It was easier for me when I was SL and APL because I wasn't even thinking about WL; I was just trying to make it to BSL...which seemed to take forever. But once I hit BSL I started feeling more discouraged because it seemed like my hair didn't wanna grow anymore. But eventually, I started seeing progress. What kept me going was focusing more on the health of my hair rather than the length. I also wear styles that keep me from having to handle my hair and see it on a daily...like braids. I'll probably be wearing braids until I hit my goal.

I BC from a little past waist to just the top of BSL and then instantly regretted it. For me going from BSL to WSL seemed like it was taking forever- I just wanted my hair to grow and I remember being so frustrated that it just wasn't happening fast enough. Go figure that the moment I decided to tryout "benign neglect", my hair started to love me and grew. I wash 2x a week, moisturize and bun until my next wash day- That's it. I could only imagine how long my hair would have grown if I had never cut it in the first place. My biggest motivation outside of my simple love for the way long hair looks, is the fact that I'm curious to see just how long it will get.

I was just admiring some thick WL hair and thinking to myself...Can I ever have hair like that:perplexed? Technically, I know it's possible because my hair is growing but...So, yeah I do know what you mean. It doesn't happen often but sometimes it does. I guess at those times I should look at my progress pics or something...I have been visualizing myself with MBL hair so that's cool. I think I'll start visualizing WL...maybe that'll help too.

whew starr purtty hair missy.. This is a cool thread, it seems like an almost impossibility for me to have hair that long, but I have since been visualizing my hair mid back as well...

it seems imposible for me to :nono: thats why it would be nice to hear from someone who was thinking the same thing, and made it to WL.

where you discouraged?

No, but then again, I'm a very patient person.

Did you ever think, im never going to make it?

When I was growing my hair out, I never really had sights on reaching waist length. I was just happy to find hair boards with other women interested in healthy hair. So, I decided to see how long my hair would get.

What where you thinking, when you were SL,APL or where ever you started??

I thought 'wow my hair is getting long'.

How and what kept you going?

Motivation from hair boards.

Would you do it all over again if you could?

:yep: I sure would.

Actually, I wasn't discouraged. I think it is because when I started the hair boards, there were waistlength women that had my hair type. So once I saw that, I just focused on taking care of my hair and the length retention came along with it. I have had many many setbacks but I know what to do and my setbacks came from trying to do things differently.

My advice to you would be to:
1. Know what you need to do to take care of your hair
2. After you know what you need, be consistent, don't follow every rave (especially when you are still trying to get to your goal length)
3. Don't think about it too much (once I stopped thinking about it, one day I flat ironed a section and was like ... OH MY GOSH ... IT'S WAISTLENGTH!!)

You will get there. I had the shortest, most tight 4b hair when I was younger. Everyone used to make jokes about my hair because it was packed and no one ever took care of it. I still have the same 4b hair, but now, those same people who made jokes can't believe how long my hair is. I would have never guessed in a million years that my hair would make it to this length.

It can happen ... trust me. Just keep going. Don't expect it to be an overnight thing. I have been working on this mane for since 2001. AND ... I'm still working on it!!

I did a lot of visualization after I did the big chop. I didn't feel discouraged, but I did feel impatient. I was happy to cut off the relaxed ends and to finally have natural hair after a 14 month transition. But I did not really like having short hair, probably because I wasn't used to it. So I was always wanting it to grow...quickly.

One thing that helped me was taking progress pics. There were times when I felt like I wasn't making progress, but the pictures showed me that I actually was.

There were a couple of people I communicated with from the hair boards that really helped me and put things in perspective for me. Sometimes having a hair buddy, who is farther along than you, can help. It did me.

In the end, patience is really what it's all about. Hair grows. But it's so hard, I know, when you want it to be long ASAP...preferably yesterday.

Great thread!
Recently I thought: Hey I think it would be awesome if my hair were super long. I am tall ,5' 9" to be exact. So I think I could work that well. Also the idea of dispelling the myths would bring a great deal of satisfaction. As far as getting to that goal....well that is another story. I am just grazing arm pit,and that took some doing! Set backs are a b#t*h. And I have had my share

Alright , so come on ,lets have some more stories and encouragement!
Thanks for those who have already shared. It really does help.
