After being told for over a decade that I have "super thick" hair, I am coming to the realization that I have fine hair; not super fine, but fine enough to where I need to think about switching the way I manipulate my hair and rethink my regimen. SO my question, has anybody else come to any of these conclusions? Have you had a hair epiphany?

Yep I have. I used to think I had super thick hair too. That is what I have always been told but I really have fine hair with medium density. My curl pattern is also EXTREMELY tight which leads people to think my hair can take super relaxers and such because they think it is coarse and thick.

What I've noticed is that since I've been conditioning and moisturizing my hair regularly, it is much easier to manipulate. It also appears that its not as dense as I once believed it to be. Not fine, but definitely not what I thought. I too have been told my hair is "super thick".

Yup I was just thinking about that today. But I think that my hair has actually started to THIN since the days of being told that I had "a lotta head" etc.

Thats mainly why Im going back to natural....

yep. people have been telling me this for years and i couldnt see it before but i just realized last night that my new growth is very thick and coarse. i dont want to go natural but i was admiring it today. my hair is naturally thick but my ends are thin.

your hair looks pretty thick to me. thats the thickness im striving for:)

I used to believe that my hair was much too thick to manage. Now I realize that I have a lot of fine strands and a big head. That's why my hair is at my collarbone when straightened but my ponytail is still anemic.

Girl you got BHS too? That's Big Head Syndrome for all ya'll...my mother diagnosed my when I was born, we need a support thread!!!

Yes!! I've definately heard this all of my life...except I think I really do have thick hair.:look: Either that or fine strands and very dense.

Okay I am not the only one.

My hair is fine and I have always considered it thick. I always have people tell me that my hair is thick, too. Nope! Each strand is fine and delicate and I have learned the hardway that some things and methods just don't work!

im also beginning to think i have fine hair and yes i have been told since i was little that my hair is very thick especially when i was natural cause my hair is really course but even now when i go braid my hair the bbraiders always compalint that i have too much hair on my head so i thinks its just really dense?:ohwell:

Mine is not as thick as I once thought it was. I have been trying to decide if it is thinnin now or if I have just been mistaken in the past. :perplexed

If I would have learned this years ago:rolleyes::wallbash: I would have saved myself alot of heartache.

You could just have a thick head of hair with indivual fine strands.

I was told that my hair is thick but I just didn't see it. After lurking on the board, I finally realized I have fine hair with medium density! If I pull out a strand of hair it's hard to see versus looking like a strand of thread.

All sorts of light bulbs went off and AH HA moments.:scratchch Back in the 80's a stylist told me he was going to apply a relaxer but not leave it on long (texlax). That's why he did it because I had fine hair.

Fast forward, I had a different stylist who relaxed my hair bone straight which was too much for my fine strands:wallbash:. Well, I'm natural now but it sure was an eye opener for me.

I believe I found this out about myself like a year ago. I think that the back and sides of my hair are fine but dense and the top part of my head is very course. I used to use Super relaxers way back in the day and I found that it was much too much for my hair. Everyone says my hair is thick but when I check my shed hair the strands are not thick they look normal and some look fine.

I hate that! I've been told I have thick all of my life, because it is so coarse. I do have thick coarse hair, but that doesn't mean you can put a super relaxer on my head or even put relaxer all over my head. 4B hair is actually more susceptable to damage, because it is more sensitive. I hate misconceptions. People never know how to work with my hair. :ohwell:This has happened to me many times. Now my edges are no longer thick. I hope they will recover one day.

I had an epiphany, when I realized that my hair grows slow. People have always wanted to put a relaxer on my coarse hair after a month. My hair does not grow that fast, hence I need more time between relaxers. I think this is many black women's downfall. If your hair only grows a .25inch or an 1/8inch a month, then you should at least stretch for 2 months.

I actually have an extreme case of this disorder. It never fails every time I get my hair braided the braider comments on how massive my head is. I think that my head is covered with many diff textures. Sometimes I look at my hairs and they are really thick and I have others that are thin. I'm not sure if they've always been that way or if they are thinning. I've always been told I had really thick hair actually my mother started sending me to the salon when I was in the first grade. The woman convinced my mother to allow me to get a relaxer. The woman who did my hair gave me an ultra sheen super perm at the age of 6. It's crazy because my first grade school pictures I had bone straight mbl hair and my second grade pictures I had braids that barely touched my ears. I actually went natural about 3 or 4 years back and reverted back to a relaxer because it was very difficult to deal with. I really wish I would have found lhcf back then, I probably would have gotten some really good tips and stayed natural:sad:

I realized a couple of years ago that I loved my hair.

For years--YEARS!--I heard people complain about how thick it was, how "overwhelming" it was (yep, hairdressers too :ohwell:). After I got used to doing it myself, I noticed how great it was. It's bushy, but it tames really well when it's healthy. The texture is so versatile I literally lost any sense of envy I ever held for anyone else's head of hair. And the color! It's dark, but it's highlighted and REALLY brings out my coloring when it's out.

To this day my family members would swear up and down that my hair is thick, coarse, and hard to deal with.

I found out through experience that it's slightly thicker than normal, not coarse at all, and very easy to do (even better if I have a style in mind).

Nowadays I don't trust anyone enough to let them do my hair. It seems like people are so used to categorizing all types of hair that they lump all kinks into one safe category "thick and coarse". We don't all fit there, just like all straight hair doesn't fit into "silky and shiny".

I believe this is my hair. My parents always told me my hair was fine but stylist would say it's thick. My hair is not thick! I wish it was...... My twin got all the thick hair and you can tell. Her ponytails were always super full and her hair can take more abuse then mine. She has so much hair, I am jealous.
