I live near Chicago and was trying to look locally to find the Indian powders and oils. Ive ordered from eastwestbazarr online before but If I can get it closer to me, that would be great. Any suggestions midwesters???

Have you tried Devon Avenue in West Rogers Park? That's the biggest Indian community in Chicago. There's Indian and Pakistani grocery stores, restaurants, clothing stores, ect. I've never tried to buy indian oils before, but if i were looking for some, Devon avenue would probably be where i'd look.
here's some info about the community:

Co-signing Devon avenue.

I've wondered about this for the past couple of weeks. I came across Devon Avenue online and I thought I'd look it up so thanks for the confirmation!

If you're in the western suburbs they're everywhere here too. I live in Naperville and I know of more places to buy Indian hair care products than black ones.

There are a couple of small markets in the south 'burbs (Orland and Oak Forest on 159th) if you are that way. They have amla, shikaikai, and some other stuff too.

I passed some when i was driving yesterday. Funny thing is I never noticed them before until yesterday. I'm gonna go check them out this week.

They're all up and down by the car dealerships next to Orland Square mall.

Devon Ave there are so many Indian/ Pakistani stores on this street that you'll find whatever your looking for. I live a block away from devon so thats where I get my indian supplies from.

I co-sign with Devon Avenue. I live on the Southwest Side of Chicago but I have never even heard of Indian/Pakistani shops by Orland Square Mall.

There are two that I go to. They are small but I have been able to get my amla oil and powder and shikaikai(sp?). They have other stuff but I only looked for the things that I knew about at the time. Next time I go I will look for more. They are:

Kwick Pantry
6050 W 159th St., Oak Forest
It's near a Wonder Bread store and a Chase bank in a little strip mall on the north side of 159th

Taj Groceries and Spices
8921 W 159th St., Orland
This one is even smaller and in a smaller strip mall on the south side of 159th. There is a prominently displayed lottery sign on the outside.

Dayjoy thank you sooooooooo much! I live in Park Forest and lawd knows I did not want to drive all the way to Devon Ave., I may as well keep buying it online and keep my gas!

I actually called the one in Orland earlier but the lady didn't speak much english so that call didn't go well. Which one do you think had better prices? The one in Oak Forest probably has more stock though.

The one in Oak Forest has newer looking stuff and is a bigger store, but for some weird reason I like the other one better, even with that non-English speaking woman. Maybe because in person she's sweet:look:. Oak Forest's Amla was about 50 cents more but it was newer. The prices in general are cheap altogether when you compare to other hair products. I would love to get up to Devon one day though.

Yeah I went to the one in Oak Forest today and they had pretty much everything. They didn't have amla powder but I already have some so it wasn't a big deal. He said he was getting in more amla powder next week, as well as some other ones.

They had plenty of the Dabur Amla Oil 10 fl.oz, but I can't remember for how much. These are the prices I remember:

  • Dabur Vatika Oil - $2.99
  • Hesh Neem Powder - $1.99
  • Hesh Shikakai Powder - $1.99
  • Reshma Henna (200 grams) - $1.99

I picked up some rosewater as well for my skin but I think I can incorporate it into my tea rinses as well. The rosewater is $1.99

I did stop by the one in Orland Park and they really didn't have anything there that I was interested in. I remember seeing some Shikakai Powder though.

Jenflee-

Where do you get your eyebrow threaded? I am on the SouthSide of Chicago.....Devon/???? Is there an intersection I should be looking for?

Which store do you go to exactly? I mean there's so many but I really don't wanna do alot of walking around. It's kinda hard to find a park on that street.

Well I went to the place on 147th Cicero to get may eyebrows waxed. the lady who does them is Indian and told me a bout a new grocery store that just opened. Its called Swagat. The address is 5240 159th St. Its on the North side of the street before you get to KFC.

I got :

Dabur Amla Oil 10.14 fl oz 3.29
Shikakai Oil 16 oz 4.99
Amla & Shikakai shampoo 4.49
Vatika 10.5 oz 4.99
Shikakai powder 1.99
Parachure coconut oil 16oz <dont remember how much I paid, I just know it
was Cheap>

He going to order the Amla powder. It should be in by Friday.

I went to Kwik pantry to compare prices. the difference was slight. I like Swagat better. They seem to have more stuff. They guys who worked in both stores were very friendly and helpful

Oh one more thing . They do eyebrow threading on Saturday and Sunday from 12-5 for only $5.00. Id just paid $12 a piece for my daughter and I.

I will be going back there!

I remember an Indian guy telling me a new store was coming when he told me about Kwik Pantry. Girl, you are the bomb for this one. I will be up in Swagat tomorrow if the roads are OK. Thanks alot!!
