I haven't been on here in a few months ....I've been busy with work, school and S/O.

I was braiding my hair for about 6 months to transition from relaxed to natural. I finally got fed up and cut off the hair end of July. I've been completely natural for about 3 months now. My hair is really thick and sometimes unmanageable. I can't really style it myself. When it's wet it is easy to comb through but when dry it get difficult.

I wanna know what I can use to keep it moist so it stay soft all day. It's about 5 inches long right now but it's curly so it coils in a lot.

Your advice is welcome ladies:yep:

Sorry I have no advice I came in here to see some pics of your big chop.:look: I am sure some of the natural ladies will chime in soon.

Congrats!! My hair was dry at first for a little bit. Have you tried DCing yet? That should help. Also, try using a leave in conditioner.

I didn't like how it looked when I first cut it but it has since grown out a lot. The pic above and the one in this post are recent. I'm thinking of putting a rinse in .....mostly cause I'm tired of seeing it that colour....it looks black in the pic but it's really more brown

what is DC? I'm not too familiar with all the acronyms here....I'll try the leave in conditioner

Deep Condition... You might have to do it overnight a few times. But as long as I wash and DC my hair once a week it'll stay soft all week. The leave in makes it better but I only really use that if I'm doing a wash and go so that the gel doesn't make my hair feel dry.

Congrats on the big chop!

When my hair was shorter, S-Curl No Drip Moisturizer kept my hair soft and moisturized.

Oh I deep conditiong regularly but I guess I do have to use a leave-in to keep it moist. What do you use?

@Poohbear....where do you buy that from?

I use the ORS Paks to DC once a week and I use Nexxus Humectress as a leave in. I've also used Giovanni Direct Leave In and it works nicely.

thanks....I need to look for that leave in.....because that is my main issue now...I need my hair to remain moist throughout the day. Does it give some shine too? My hair has a tendency to literally drink porducts and look like I never put anything in.

Thanks you guys for your support.

@Bklynheart .......you think that's a lot for six months??? I think it's not growning fast enough... I guess my lack of patience showing again

My hair is never really shiny but I think if it's well moisturized it will give off a sheen. I think DCing a few times maybe even over night should get the thirsty hair thing under control. After you get that down, you'll just need to maintain that level of moisture. Also, what products are you using on your hair now? That might be contributing to dryness. How ofter do you wash and with what? Also, do you cowash or do you just use shampoo?

I used garnier fructis long and strong since my hair was relaxed...lately I been using mane n tail....I shampoo and condition my hair. I use hair mayonnaise to DC. Today I'm going to get the leave in.

I use oilive oil hair moisturizer but I don't think it does much for my hair....it still looks dry and it doesn't maintain moisture for long.

I don't have much advice (still searching for the perfect leave-in myself), but your texture is beautiful. Congrats on the BC.

Your hair looks great, Val. Have you ever thought of trying henna to change your color? You can add amla and coffee to keep your hair darker and add honey and yogurt for moisture/conditioning so your hair doesn't dry out any further.

BTW- for added moisture and to help with dryness, try adding honey or glycerin to your conditioners ( for co-washing and deep conditioning).

I second the S-Curl no drip activator. It helped with dryness when I had a twa and adding castor oil to your conditioners or baggying with castor oil for an hour or two on damp hair.

Congratulations on the big chop. I love your texture.

wow you guys got techniques for days!!!!

I'll try some of them and see what works for me. As for the henna ...I never thought about it since I don't know much about it. Probably you can tell me more

I went to a sally's store and another hair store and couldn't find the s-curl no drip thingy...is there a site you could link me to?

Val I get my S-Curl from Walmart and believe it or not the Family Dollar and the Dollar General stores in Macon, Georgia carry it ...I think the largest bottle cost about 5.50. But after you do the big chop your hair is in shock for about a month and you hvae to try different conditioners until it gets used to being exposed. I used Cantu shea butter at night under my bonnet and also if your hair tolerate Creme of nature shampoo the extra moisturizing one is the one I used the most after my big chop and it doesn't leave a film. You don't have to spend a lot of money after the big chop on products...use this step to use all the conditioners you have purchased in the past and didn't exactly like. You can combine a couple and put a conditioning cap on and let it stay all night and rinse it out in the morning and put NTM leave in conditioner on it and let it air dry. My bc chop picture is available in the photo gallery.:grin::grin:

You should be proud of your progress! I think (the big chop part) the hardest part is over...enjoy your hair, it's beautiful!

I didn't find it at the s-curl at the walmart near me....I'll go check out a dollar general. I did my chop in mid July so it's about 3 months now.

I went back to garnier and I'm going to try co-washing.....what difference does co-washing make?
