Hmmm no wonder my hair has seen no growth in 3 years . This is from finger detangling or just from moisturizing my hair and this is the norm for me even though I keep my moisture protein balance in check. I have fine hair strands. Oh and I've recently just done a 1/2 inch trim & it still has not stopped it. I am doomed

Its crazy you say this, because I was just thinking about this being a possible issue for me as well. The hair has to be manipulated if you want to moisturize it properly, but it is recommended not to manipulate in order to see growth. Plus im mostly low porosity 4c ,its already hard enough to get moisture in. What Im learning is Steaming helps get water into my hair without undoing the protective style ( i either do braids or two strand twists) and then I add my moisturizer. I detangle with diluted conditioner & oil, and I try not to detangle until wash day. I also just started taking liquid vitamins cause Im anemic and my hair sheds a lot. Shed hair that tangles and knots can lead to major damage. So all of these things have helped me see a little more growth. Our hair is always growing , but it's how we protect our ends that help us retain our length

I like how you stated the aforementioned information. It goes to show, what I always say. Growing afro-textured hair long and healthy requires analysis. It's a thinking game, not a guessing game.

One really has to understand products, hair and processes. Then apply that your own hair. It's not easy. But once things fall into the place, you've got information for a lifetime. That lifetime information doesn't guarantee there will be no set-backs. Yet, you can build from that information without necessarily having to start from scratch. It's like 'muscle memory', it allows you to get back on track faster.

Yes! Thats why I always find my way back to this beloved forum too. I still need reminders of what works
 
Girl my 4c hair is the same. Little coils everywhere with every touch. I've kinda just given up on it. I just wash it weekly with Dr. Bronners, dc weekly with Shea moisture, moisturize with water/aloe juice mix/oyin hair dew and seal with castor oil. But it's still dry and brittle. This is why I'm gonna get locs soon.
 
When I started layering emollient, creamy products - a rich leave in, with a cream like Cantu or Lottabody and then sealing w/butter or grease - I found a huge increase in the softness and pliability/elasticity of my hair. A modified version of the LOC/LCO Method. This moisture would last me a week in protective styles. It didnt matter as much how good a product was on its own (which was great for my pocket).

Others have been using just s-Curl and butter/grease with great success!

Do you get this amount of breakage too from just moisturizing or finger detangling ?

I consider my hair to be fine (at least compared to others in my family). In order for me to avoid “application breakage,” I try to use products that glide on my strands rather than “tug” - i.e are too “sticky,” don’t spread easily or have enough slip, and react poorly to my hair’s chemistry when its wet and at its weakest (raising the cuticles). When I see little fine bits of hair in my hands after applying product, I know either I have build up, the products I used “tug,” my hair is over-moisturized and needs protein, or (less often) I need a trim.

Hmmm interesting. So less is more when it comes to fine hair & also slip? I dunno why but my hair feels horrible when wet even with product, but once dry much softer. Makes me wonder why is that

I have just made a homemade daily hair spritz using hydrolyzed wheat protein and giovanni 50/50 then seal with coconut oil. See how that goes

Not really SMH. Lol Between my slow growth and breakage, my hair is between 4 -8 inches depending on the section. Plus I usually break down from all the frustrations with my hair and do a BC every 2-3 years to start over... I'm due for one soon actually :look:.

For protein I either use once or twice a week- oyin honey hemp (hydrolyzed silk is a middle ingredient) or shea moisture coconut and hibiscus hair masque (silk protein near bottom).

I rotate between shampooing one week then co washing the next week with Giovanni 50/50 shampoo & conditioner. Deep condition twice a month with Giovanni Smooth as Silk as recommended in the Science of Hair Book. Dry my hair with a mirco fibre wrap then add anything from Camille Rose Whipped Aloe Butter, Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie or Giovanni Direct Leave ln and then seal with my homemade Whipped Shea Butter Mix or sometimes Coconut Oil. I Detangle with the Hercules Magic Star Seamless Comb on wash days. Then finger detangle in between washes

Use my homemade Spritz in between washes (Giovanni Conditioner, a little Jojoba Oil & Water).

But I will be honest now since my leave ins have water as the first ingredient I don't always spritz my hair with water first... Do you think this could be the culprit??
