I just ask coz I got my hair cornrowed in extensions which cost me a lot (for some strange reason) and I looked at the website when I got back, it said that you can only keep them in for 2 weeks or you get severe matting???

The story of my life:sad:

I have never been able to keep them in for longer than 2 weeks because they just start looking bad.

I dont know if accurate is the right word but its her regimen. She grew her hair to waistlength in two years doing this method. Its a pretty sound regimen and has worked for lots of woman on the boards. There is alot of great tips on the sight and I think it good to use what works best for your hair.hth

I have followed the Crown & Glory method for a long time. And I love it.

You can try to keep your cornrows as long as you desire. You have to be the judge of when to take them out. Usually they just don't look good anymore around 1.5 weeks and beyond. It will also depend on how rapidly your hair grows. I know they will last longer if you don't submerge them in water.

But how long do you plan to go without washing or deep conditioning.

Why did they cost a lot. Please take some pictures, I'd love to see the style even if you just PM me.

I personally dont think everyones hair is going to mat after 2 weeks. but as pervious posters said i usually jus want to take them out after 2 weeks, but if u feel u can last longer and have it look good if u properly care for it i dont see what the problem would be.

I already co washed it lol! I was itching and I havent got any proper braid spray, the appearance of my braids has gone downhill already because i didnt protect it but its ok as I wear scarfs and stuff quite a lot.

I was really looking forward to leaving it in but Im worried now coz I dont want it to matt:perplexed

Thank you for advice, I may take them out and get singles but I did pay £45 ($90) I dont know if thats a lot in America but my Mum said I was overchaged:nono:

My hair looks like yours at the top but it goes to my crown as a pony and the nape has vertical ones all the way across, to be honest its kinda basic but I will get some pics. I dont know why the **** charged me so much for my lil head:wallbash:

IMO you have to get to know what works for your hair and what doesn't. For me cornrowed extensions can last anywhere from 4 weeks to 6, and I do not experience matting. I ensure that my scalp is clean, and I keep my hair moisturised adequately.

For me, skinny cornrows can last up to a month. After that, they get fuzzy. If washed, they will fuzz up faster (I don't mind fuzz, so I wash them when I wear them).

$85-90 is the going rate for medium cornrows at braid shops in my area - Maryland. Feed-in braids (no knots at the beginning) are starting at $100-120.

Because of the cost, I usually try to do 3-4 weeks with gently washing/rinsing once a week.

ETA-I think the grow afro long site has very good advice, but some people alter it to their own needs, especially the 2 weeks limit and the time in between the next set of single braids.

awww Tickled Pink if your in London:nono:, they def overcharged you. Cornrows are ususally £25- £35.

If you live in a non- black area i can see why they would be so expensive. Or did you go to an upmarket salon? They'd probably be that much. Because ,most round the way ones are like £25 even £15.

ITA! I love C&G, but if I use her methods exactly I'd be bald.

:crying3: Aww now thats just wrong. I dont live in LDN but I know that things are more expensive down there, I never had it done before so I didnt know I was being fleeced.

The hair dresser was from the ghetto and used to operate from her house, I asked her over the fone how much SHES LIKE "£35+". Me being me with my lil head and fine hair thought I would get it for minimum price but she goes £45 (and that was after we negotiated:pullhair:). I made a big effort to go down there, take all my hair out and stuff so I felt kind of obligated, meh!

I dread to think how much singles would cost:rolleyes:

When I used to have cornrow extensions, I would keep them in for 6 weeks and they cost £30. Although I did pay £40 a few years ago at another haridresser and that was after negotiating. She quoted £45 but I said that I would wash and condition my own hair and asked if she would it for £40. Last week I heard of one hairdreser charging £70 for cornrow extensions which is just extortionate

I now just get my hair cornrowed wthout extensions and just keep them in for 2 weeks at a time. Found a young girl to do it for £10 and I just give her £2 tip on top.

Sweet Whispers, I have nothing to add. I just wanted to say that you were DEAD WRONG, for your siggy.

OT: Sareca, what hair do you prefer to use for your braids?

I started using afro texturized kanekalon (the kind use for kinky twists) long before I ever had kinky twists. I think it looks more natural on me and the hair itself is lighter. Anyway, my favorite brand of kinky twist hair (or afro texturized hair) is called Tasha. It's super soft and super light.

Your mum's right! What part of England are you in, I could give a you some numbers for ladies who would do very nice single plaits for £50 max £60. Cornrows cannot be more than £20-25 and these would be very professionally done. PM me if you need these.

The same applied to me when I've had my hair in cornrow extensions. I would Co wash every other day and keep the scalp moisturised. IMHO they can mat if you get product overload and don't adequetely rinse / wash them.

Me either. :nono: It's all over my BBS, but I haven't found anything online. I've had a couple people tell me it has recently "shown up" in their local BBS, so I think it's becoming more popular.

That's it in the middle... see if your BBS carries it.

My hair doesnt seem to be gunky yet but Im only using Cathy Howse dew moisturiser which is a pretty light spray. I co washed aswell yesterday, how often are you supposed to moisturise in cornrows??:look:

Sareca how do you care for your twists? How long do you keep them in?

I am in twists now and will probably be taking them out in a week or so. Give my hair some breathing room and go back into twists.

Do you deep condition the twists like you do your normal hair?

To the OP I like the twists better than braids because the older the twists the better and more natural they start to look, especially if you use the right hair. You can get longer than 2 weeks out of them too.

I think that's just her personal preference. You can keep them in longer than that but I guess it depends on everybodys hair. My hair is cornrowed with added hair under my weave for extended periods of time and gets washed, conditioned, etc and it doesn't matt. It's essentially the same thing. I never keep cornrows that I'm wearing just as a style in for longer than two weeks though because they always start looking fuzzy.

My braid regimen is very similar to my regular hair regimen. Basically I all the same things my hair loves, but I don't use hard proteins. I leave them in for 6-8 weeks.

My Regimen
June 2007 (braided)
Note: I'm making some changes. I'm trying to keep my product list to a minimum.

* Boundless Tresses every couple days for the first few weeks. I stop about 5 weeks in and switch to LR.
* poo 2X/week (using one capful of poo to 16oz of water) only on scalp the runoff is enough to clean the hair.
* condition after poo (w/ a cap full of leave-in conditioner mixed w/ 16oz of water (i've been using metatek or aveda for this lately)
* pre-poo overnight (or for a couple days) with my red palm cream.
* I'm using Eqyss Avocado Mist mixed with Eqyss Rehydrant and a little SAA as my braid spray. I follow with red palm cream.
* Steam treatments 1/wk (pre-poo then wrap hair w/ a steaming towel for about 20 minutes)

OH YEA! Very bad things happen when I don't DC... no matter what style I'm wearing.

To DC:

1. Use 1 capful and a 16oz bottle add a little water and shake it until the conditioner is all smooth
2. Fill the bottle with water. I brought a 69 cent funnel from walmart that I keep in the shower along with 2 empty water bottles (one for poo and one for conditioner).
3. After shampoo'g (using the same ratios and water bottle and funnel method) pour the conditioner-water over hair. Apply it in 4-6 section so you don't miss any hairs. :)
4. Wring hair out as much as possible and put it in a loose ponytail, then wrap that into a bun.
5. Put a grocery store bag (it probably won't all fit in a plastic shower cap) and sit under the dry for 20 minutes (or however long you usually DC).
6. Rinse.
7. Get back under the dryer for 10 minutes just so that it's not dripping wet.
8. Sponge on another leave-in (Eqyss Avocado Mist or Rehydrant)
9. I apply my homemade red palm cream to any exposed hairs. Usually the roots (after a few weeks of growth) and over the top to get any little hair sticking out of the braids).
10. Every couple days I melt some more moisturizer, put it in an empty squirt bottle and saturate my braids then poo in the morning.
