Sisterlocks

For the last month or so I have liked the look of sisterlocks. While the price is high especially for the install and maintenance. I wanted to find out about the other pros and cons. My hair is rather fine so regular dreads have never been an option but this may work. I wanted to find out if anyone still had them and how do you care for them in between twisting sessions?

• Sisterlocks are not "twisted" they are interlocked. Youtube is full of videos on "interlocking"
  
  
• Though not popular, I advise my clients to gently twist their sisterlocks (with gel) between their retightening appointments if they really need a fresh look. In an effort to lessen the likelyhood of them damaging their locks doing this I take the time to show them the technique.
  
  
• Caring for your hair while styled in sisterlocks is not a difficult process though it may be a bit of a different process than you are use to. The biggest challenge is in avoiding unraveling (referred to as "slippage") during the early stages; hence the use of Banding & Bundling groups of locs together during the washing process and my preference that clients use a hair covering at night.

NOTE the underlined as I choose my word v-e-r-y carefully: It is "YOUR HAIR" and sisterlocks is a STYLE. Many of my comrades don't emphasis this point the way I do.
My rule of thumb is "Maintaining A HEALTHY SCALP AND HEAD OF HAIR IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN MAINTAINING A "HAIR STYLE":

1. IF YOUR HAIR is usually dry, then you need moisture, and water alone won't suffice (just like it doesn't on our skin)**.
   
2. IF YOUR SCALP is prone to dandruff and you have a shampoo that works for you; keep using it. Nothing about YOUR HAIR being styled in sisterlocks will change your scalp**
3. ** At the same time I acknowledge that using less products, less chemicals, and less styling tools may also POSITIVELY impact the health of HEALTH OF YOUR HAIR & SCALP
   
4. ETA: Regarding the price.
   Consider that Sisterlocks (SLs) are a long-term or lifetime style choice; with that said I'd suggest you do a cost comparison of installation (I prefer the term initial styling) w/upkeep over a year & convenience WITH THE the costs of a Weaves and/or other hair services/purchases and your time over the same period.
   ALSO, remember that SLs are not a disposable product, the others are. SLs should come out as a better investment; if after reasonable comparison it is not then I'd suggest you try using your knowledge to bargain with the Consultant. Perhaps she'll work with you.

Are Sisterlocs installed by two-strand twisting? I viewed someone's hair and it looked more like the hair was crochet. This is an issue for me because my hair does not take two strand twists--only a three strand plait.

Do Loctitians install in say....three different seatings? I can't possible sit for 12 hours.

Night Care of hair. I've never worn a head scarf at night. I this really necessary?

I would certainly appreciate any information.

This is an issue for me because my hair does not take two strand twists--only a three strand plait. No to 2-strand-twist (2ST)s, they are interlocked and this DOES create a crochet looking pattern.

Do Loctitians install in say....three different seatings? I can't possible sit for 12 hours. This you'd have to discuss with the consultant, as she'd have to arrange her schedule to accommodate your request. Most should have no trouble breaking the install up into 2 or more sessions.

Night Care of hair. I've never worn a head scarf at night. I this really necessary? No not necessary but HIGHLY recommended during the first few months; I've found that this step also helps the locks look a bit neater as they mature. Perhaps a satin pillow case would suit.

I would certainly appreciate any information.

Thanks so much. A young lady at my job did her own version with two strand twist but they are very fuzzy. I know that two strand twist will just unravel in three days on my head.

The price may seem high but once they are installed they are good to go! Mine are 10 years old and I've maintained my own hair for 9 of those years. I haven't paid $1 on my hair (besides oils, shampoo, conditioner, etc.) for 9 years! Totally worth it to me!
