That's way more than I'm used to pay. The most I've paid is $200 for individual tree braids. I really liked them but I can't bring myself to pay that much on a regular basis. I'm getting tired of the crochet braids I'm wearing though, as much as I like them... People are beginning to think that's my hair.

I once paid $325, I went at 6am and got home at 6pm. I didn't know any better.
I found a lady who could do it in 2 hours and she charge $75 and so much better then $325 lady. I haven't had braids in a long time

I just watched youtube and bought my hair offline since they dont sell it any where near in my area. Took me 12 hours and 30$ for individuals. I did it over the weekend and had a style for 6-8 weeks. I took the hair down and washed it so the next few sets were free.

I did this once. It took all weekend, braid, rest, braid, housework, braid. I saved a lot and it turned out really well but never did it again.

I used to pay $150-180 for micros from the African Braid shops here in Florida. I called a braider in Phoenix, Arizona once when my truck was in the shop. She was charging $350 and up for micros.
(Not including hair)I decided to wait until I went back to Florida.

I watched A bunch of YouTube videos. And I learned how to do Cinglie's twist on my own a little bit of practice but I got them down pat.
I redo them every 3 to 4 weeks so I can just wash and do whatever else I need to do for my hair. So once a month I buy the Marley hair spent about 20 bucks and that's chip and that's it.

The fist time is always the hardest. I set about 4-6 hours in between everything during that day. The more you practice the faster you get. It really saves a lot of money.

I've paid this much for micros and tree braids. In all fairness to the braider y'all do realize micros can take as long as 12 hours depending on the size and the thickness of your hair? I'm sure that has a lot to do with the price especially if you break it down to an hourly rate.

Nope lol. The tree braids damaged my hairline. I had some success with micros though even though it was pre hair journey. The trick with them is to not get them too small and not too tight around the hairline.

I've paid in that range for Khamit Kinks for baby curl twists (many times). It's an elite salon with elite stylists who sit with my hair for 6 hours and whose time is money and they deserve it because they deliver exponentially. The hair was premium quality and was great against my own hair and was re-used it maintained such amazing shape. Competition in NY on that level is what it is. Whether a white salon or black.
I don't want to deal with 'maybe the outcome will be as good as last time', or an illegal hole in the wall, or somebody's little cousin, or scalp pulling, being talked into 40 different services, a dusting turning into a trim, rude clients, inferior tools, toyokalon, attitude, someone who doesn't speak english, eats while in your head or doesn't accept CCs. I know I'm comparing the best to the worst, and there's a lot in between, where people like the service they get for cheaper even in NY. But talent costs and is worth money, and so is peace of mind and great service. The stylists are incredible and in-demand, appt are on time, in advance and the place in huge, clean and doesn't have people selling CDs or shrimp dinners, or stylists giving sermons, or gossiping or arguing with BFs, or high prices but 99cent conditioner or nowhere to secure my coat, or backed up plumbing and no toilet tisssue, or funky incense, or jacked up towels, or tatty smocks, or edgeless stylissts hiding bad hair under wigs, or taking 2 trains, 5 buses and a gypsy cab to get there and on and on.
I've been to horrible cheap salons, horrible expensive salons, great cheap salons and great expensive salons and either way when the service is bad Im angry, when its fantastic Im happy despite the price.

I feel your pain OP I walked into two shops in my area a few weeks back and asked for Jumbo box braids and was quoted $200 without the hair. So I asked how much twist would be with the hair from the shop and she said $300. I said thanks and walked out i'm not paying a car note for braids especially when i'll take them out within 4 weeks. So I went to the bss and brough 5-6 packs of hair spent $11.00 and had my mom put them in for me it only took her 2 hrs.

I am in LA and have been thinking of getting my hair braided as a protective style and $200-$300 seems to be the going rate, and that is not for a celebrity stylist nor does it include the hair. One of the salons is even an African owned spot.

There is a huge debate about prices for salon braiders versus home braiders but some home braiders seem to be priced higher than salons.
I've paid from $45 - $150 for crochet braids. The $45 was a waste because I had them removed and redone for $100 two days later by my prior stylist (licensed). She fixed it within 2 hours (used same braid base).
I've paid $90 - $100 for Havana twists (licensed braider who works from a shop as well as at home).
