Is working out daily similar to giving yourself a daily scalp massage?

I understand both help to stimulate the follicles by increasing blood flow to scalp.

Are they both necessary or can you do one or the other and still achieve locks that grow more quickly?
 
My hair has gone from SL/CBL to about 1.5 inches from APL since July 4th with another cut in between! I swear up and down its the working out several times a week.
That's great! If only I had the energy/time to exercise... Since I'm lazy I just stick to the scalp massages:look:
