I am relaxed and colored. In the past I did not have any dryness or breaking but I always used a black or dark brown boxed color and I put the color in myself. This time I have a lighter color and I have lots of dryness and breaking. I also got it professionally done and I felt like the dye was very harsh as it had a strong odor and it gave an almost burning sensation.

Can I go back to black or brown without any further complications

No. Demipermanent uses a low level developer (10% or less) to deposit color for a longer time. In my experience demi never completely rinses out. It sort of stains your hair, but it can only darken or deepen. Permanent color is the only color that can lighten hair.

Semipermanent color can last up to a few months.

Ahhhhhh okay. Thanks

@TopShelf,
I like to occasionally color my hair too (I am 100% natural at this point) but wanted to ask you how often do you incorporate protein treatments or at least re constructors into your regiment? For many of us relaxed, tex-laxed, natural or whatever, the regular use of some type of protein, plus regular deep conditioning, and porosity control (Roux, ACV, etc) are not negotiable when you choose to color your hair. This has made all the difference in the world for me regarding moisture balance when I have colored my hair. HTH

Pretty much every time I wash my hair which is almost weekly along with dc

Perhaps, the dryness and breakage are the result of too much protein, especially since it's being used on a weekly basis.
