Have You Tried Protein To Accelerate Your Hair Growth

I'll go first. I've been on LHCF for years so yes, I've tried a lot of different things for hair growth.

I tried protein, protein shakes, eggs, you name it. I didn't notice a difference in my hair growth.

I DID notice a difference in growth after I started taking silica. I would say about 2 to 3 extra inches that I wouldn't ordinarily see so quickly. But it took 3-4 months for me to see results. Be careful if you choose to take Silica, it can affect your kidneys. I followed the directions and cut those in half, plus I followed up with lots of water.

The only other thing that actually contributed to hair growth was a liquid vitamin from GNC. It worked! I had longer hair faster than normal after continuous use.

I get at least 100 grams of protein most days and I excercise 3 times a week. I just started eating better and working out so I will let you know after about a month.

My mother SWEARS by eggs. All my life my mum has had long, fast growing hair but when she ate eggs 3x/week, her hair grew to her butt very fast. Anytime you look up good foods for hair, protein is mentioned in some form whether it's eggs, chicken, or salmon – it's great. Overall, just maintain a healthy diet, you find that you'll naturally get enough protein as well as other nutrients to facilitate hair growth. You can also add a multivitamin to help when you have cheat days. Healthy inside + good hair habits + patience = hair growth.

Glad you posted this. Though I assume you are referring to a pill supplement, my personal trainer started me on post-workout (organic, plant based) protein drinks. It never occurred to me that this would have an affect on my hair, so I will start measuring growth.

I do much better too when I take multi-vitamins. Biotin really breaks me out no matter , I'll start checking my growth too since I just began that regimen about a week ago.

I'll have to remember to take my multi-vitamins, too.

If biotin breaks you out, @k.belle take it with a multivitamin + fish oil. I'm prone to acne and used to break out tons from biotin, since doing this, I'm able to take 5000mcg of it with no flare ups. Also, the obvious, drink water. I think the main problem with biotin is that it needs other components to absorb properly otherwise most people will end up with excess acne.

I just want to report that my nails look amazing right now. They are growing strong and I haven't broken a nail since starting my high protein diet. I'm doing a length check next week so I will find out if my hair has grown faster.

When I apply protein topically rather than taking it internally, I notice results. My hair grew pretty fast when I was using Aphogee's Green Tea Spritz and adding liquid silk amino acids to my moisturizers. My hair is protein sensitive though, so I can't go crazy lol.
So for now I use SM products like Curl Enhancing Smoothie that have silk protein high up in the ingredients list at least once a week in my DC cocktail. Maybe when I'm back home in NYC, I'll go look for my AO GPB and see if I can use it regularly without protein overload.

What's the name of your protein shake?

@alex114
I have the Aphogee Green Tea Spritz but only use it occasionally. Do you use it on your scalp?

Hey @greenandchic sorry for the late reply! This is my first non-exam day all week ugh lol
But I actually did. It feels pretty nice on your scalp, adds a little tingle. But I mostly kept it for the ends and length of my hair since those are the areas I figure would be most in need of protein.

Thanks for the reply! When you mentioned that you hair started growing faster, I associated it with using it on the scalp. I took out my spray when I cowashed the day before and I remember why I love it so much!

Like all things, this is per individual and not as a group. If you are lacking in protein this will help your growth. If you have always ate 75+ grams per day, you are not going to see a difference.

@greenandchic Yeah that was a slight brain fart on my part-- I believe it might have helped my actual growth rate a bit (because I did regularly spray it on my scalp), but what I actually think it was doing most and best of all was helping me retain length 'faster', as in I had more viable hair (that didn't need to be cut off or trimmed) at the end of a given period of time.
And yes I love it when LHCF reminds me about the amazing products I have hiding around my house, or helps me figure out how to use products I thought weren't working for me!

@nothidden - let me know how you like it versus the Orgain Organic.
@IDareT'sHair - Yes that is most often the case. Whey Protein is typically used for strength/bodybuilding training.

I was just considering ordering whey protein to up my protein intake but I ran across an article that indicated whey protein may actually contribute to hair loss.:eek: Something about it increasing testosterone levels and DHT. True or not, that was enough for me.

I'm not sure about that, if so, it's probably mainly in men. Working out for men to build muscle increases their testosterone levels which can impact their hair growth.

@ilong

:lachen:I was referring to Protein Rx's as in products for strength not consumable proteins.

@IDareT'sHair
OMG - too funny! But, girl you know how it is when you trying to grow some hair - everything is fair game!!! :hungry:Now @cynd is throwing testosterone into the mixing bowl - all 'cause we trying to grow mo' hair!!:thumbsup:

I am going to laugh about this thread each time I see/hear the words "protein" and testosterone (oops my bad - I mean "whey" ) <lol>
