^I totally agree! Not styling daily is a big factor in my retention. Sometimes I'll bun for an entire week but I will usually rake for a faux W&G for weeks at a time.

After all these years I have to admit that nothing has really accelerated my growth rate. I had the placebo effect with a couple of products/bandwagons. Unfortunately various supplements and vitamins have noticeably accelerated the hair growth in other less desirable areas on my body but I still get the same 6 inches a year on my head. Now retention... I've greatly improved retention.

Monistat accelerates my growth. Last year I got 3 inches of growth for the year. This year I have already grown 2 inches or so. I measure my roots against my colored hair

I think sulfur products accelerate my growth. I've definitely managed to improve my retention with less manipulation and better/more consistent deep conditioning, but I've noticed very fast growth from the scalp itself with the use of sulfur products. I also think protective styling during the times of the year when I grow more quickly naturally (spring-summer) is a big help.

My Granny swore by using Sulphur 8, so any sulphur product would likely do the job. Granny's hair grew noticeably fast...
I can't attest to sulphur because I cannot tolerate the scent, no matter what else is mixed in. I also don't care for grease or oil left on my scalp in general.
Instead, I've been using daily vitamins (for general purpose) in addition to Hairburst vitamins (about 2.5 months now) with good results. Not super fast growth, but faster than my normal rate for sure.

I don't know whether it accelerated my hair growth or not but I swear by Hueitful steamer/. Case in point, I wore braids for 2 1/2 years and after take-down I noticed sections in the front of my head got thinner. I didn't notice anything over the rest of my head because I just didn't. Speed up to 2015 and since I've cut off my relaxer, went natural and started steaming in my conditioner, I can now see hair growth -- the hair on my edges are still thin but it is growing, a section in front is growing back and I have short hairs all over my head, especially in areas where I use to part my hair to apply the relaxer, those parts are now sprouting hairs. Relaxers reeked havoc on my head, unbeknownst to me because you can't count every follicle on your head but my hair is now thriving on all levels. It is growing in thicker than before and eventually all the short hairs will catch-up with the rest. I am so pissed that I didn't choose to go natural before but everything happens for a reason. Anyway, all I know is that I won't be putting anybody's relaxer in my head ever again. If I want the straight hair I'll flat-iron and I won't be doing any flat-ironing for the next 4/5 years.

Avoiding the salon and doing my own hair
I also think that washing it at least once a week helps my hair stay moisturized. My hair is on the drier side.

Keep it simple. Seriously, do not over-experiment, it causes setbacks and I know that personally. Stick to what works and your hair will thank you for it. It's great to try new things but I would say be cautious and don't do too much at once.
Take vitamins, eat healthy food, exercise, drink lots of water, and get enough sleep. Water gives your hair moisture and your body repairs and grows while you sleep; exercise helps will blood circulation; taking vitamins and eating healthy food will help nourish your body from the inside out. Green smoothies are a good way to get lots of nutrients and all you need supplement-wise is a multivitamin, 5000 mcg biotin, and fish oil. If you want to add some extras, MSM, silica, and collagen protein are great – talk to your doctor first before starting a new vitamin routine, btw. It's okay to cheat and eat fast food 1x-2x/week if you really like your treats but the majority of the week, you should be giving your body healthy food because it really shows in your new growth in terms of strength, shine, luster, etc.
PATIENCE. Your hair is not going to grow overnight and all what I wrote in the previous paragraph is going to take at least 3 months before you'll see some sort of result. Waiting sucks but it's necessary.
