Congratulations. Water should be your best friend. I bc'd on August 2nd so I'm newly natural also. I wet my hair everyday. You also need to find a great conditioner that is moisturizing. Do you use shampoo? If so some shampoos can be drying. I don't use shampoo I cowash.

Um, hello, we'd appreciate a picture. Congrats on your BC. You previously had a lot of color, correct me if I'm wrong?

How long is your hair? How I moisturized my hair changed a bit as it grew longer.

Congrats on going natural! :)

& umm.. where's our pic :)

Prepoo overnight with HE HH and oil. Co wash and deep condition. When your hair is dry spray HE HH mixed with water and apply oil. Your hair will be soft.

I agree with Stephanie. I am now going on four months of being natural. Water is your friend especially if you are high porosity. Try and wet your hair everyday (preferably under the shower). At first your hair might not like it very much but eventually your hair will except the moisture and like it. I co wash daily and then shampoo occasionally.

Congrats! I would say to deep condition with heat would be the best way to alleviate dryness.

Hello and thank you for your reply. I've been using Cathy Howse's shampoo which is good for naturals I believe. My hairs are tight curls and about 1 inch when stretched:)

One of the reasons why some naturals experience dryness is that they are high porosity which means that your hair absorbs water and products very quickly leaving it to feel like it is very dry even if it is not. And because TWA's cannot be protectively styled it is hard for the water and products to really hold onto the strands.

I would definetely chime in again and say that co wash your hair several times a week and use light leave in with a humectant immediately after your wash. You can use a mild or moisturising shampoo once a week or as needed if you feel heavy build up on your hair. I would detangle in the shower.

I would stay away from oils and butters right now because those tend to be useful once your TWA is past the TWA stage and can be protectively styled.

Also, many naturals say their hair is dry and don't understand that there is a difference between what our hair feels like when it is dry and snapping with SSKs vs. a normal dryness where you can feel that your cuticles feel smooth to the touch. Many naturals feel that if their hair doesn't feel oily like a jheri curl that something is wrong. Your natural hair shouldn't feel like a jheri curl because it is not chemically processed especially if you have high porosity hair.

Our hair has a predisposition towards dryness but don't get obsessed with making it moist and buy too many products that promise this and that. So, getting that moisture balance is the most important thing. And how do you know if your hair is getting the right amount of moisture balance, well you will know when you comb or detangle your hair. If your see lots of SSKs, have snapping or breaking then your hair is dry. If your comb glides through and you have little to no major hair in the comb you are on the right track.

Best,
Almond Eyes

Hi my hair is pretty soft at the roots. I notice that it dries after 2-4 hours so not highly porous. It stays moist during this period. I've found the strand is in fact soft but the tips are dry.
