I hate how hard my hair feels using gel. I hate using gel period and I want a way where my hair can look nice and feel soft. Is this too much to ask? :lachen: I sure hope not so if you have.....please tell me your secrets!

You should join the wash n go thread. A lot of different methods are discussed there.

I'm still picking my favorite method, but Jane Carter Curl Defining Cream worked for me.

i have a strange method of achieving it:

1. Wash/Co-wash/Deep Condition in sections

2. For some strange reason my hair gets the best curls when i put it in a few twists and let it air dry overnight (nothing extensive, about 10 twists). So first I apply Camille Rose Aloe butter to the section I'm about to twist. The oils in this product help lock in the moisture from the water.

3. In a small bowl i mix Giovanni Direct Leave-in, with Kinky Kurly Curling Custard roughly 50/50. I then smooth that mixture though the small section of hair on top of the Camille Rose butter and begin to twist. I believe this mix of the leave-in and layering it on top after the butter, keeps my hair from getting hard. Perhaps because the section now has mostly butter and leave-in conditioner and a small amount of the KKCC for hold. I tried the KKCC with a diffuser and no air-dry method and i got hard hair :ohwell: I also tried a mixture of Kinky Kurly Knot Today / KKCC and my hair DID NOT LIKE IT :nono:, which is why i chose Giovanni Direct.

4. I do this layering method for one twist at a time (again roughly ten twists overall) and i go to sleep with a silk scarf on.

5. My hair dries about 70% overnight so in the morning I get the diffuser and dry each twist as I take it down.

6. Fluff Fluff Fluff

No hardness, its soft, and it lasts for a good 3-4 days. I don't know how i figured out that my curls pop via twists and the layering of product matters (i don't really watch Youtubers but i think a few do this as well) but its simple, and its seems to work. Plus its a comfortable sleep which i value. I kept thinking twists would give me a "twist out" look but my texture takes over and it turns to curls instead :look:

Sometimes i leave the twists to dry under a phony pony (also while i work out) or leave them a short wig that i love just for protective styling for a few days (i sleep in just the twists only). After awhile i miss my hair so i take the twists down from under the phony pony, fluff and Voila! I've got another hairstyle for an extra 4 days. It works very well this way, as almost a week has now gone by with little to no manipulation, protection, and moisture.

Happy hair growing!

Have you been in the Anthony Dickey thread? That is my favorite wash and go method yet for my type 4 hair. Soft and defined results every time with very minimal effort.

That's a wash n go to sleep

robot.

:lachen: Its a wash-n-go-to-sleep-and-end-up-with-curls-instead-of-twists-in-tha-morning.

Its weird i tell ya! (minus the hard crunchy hair)

Seconding the Anthony Dickey method. Basically you apply your products to soaking wet hair (in the shower if possibly). I always apply extra to compensate for the stuff that drips away. But my hair dries very soft and defined, even with gel

I get my best wash-n-goes when I twist my hair too (I do 6 twists). For whatever reason, my curls clump together and don't take the form of the twists I put them in, plus I have less shrinkage that way. I discovered this method by accident when I was being lazy and didn't want to style my hair. Now I'm just trying to figure out how to have softer curls, so thanks for the thread OP!

I have! I use whatever conditioner to detangle in the shower. I finger detangle while wet, but you can use a comb, just make sure your hair is thoroughly detangled because you won't be combing through it at all if you want to ensure a great WNG. When I get out I don't dry my hair at all. I first apply my leave in (I use curl enhancing smoothie). The method I apply the leave in is kind of like you are praying and i smooth my hair strands between my praying hands (I hope this is a good visual), then I apply oil in the same fashion (I use rice bran oil, OO, apricot shea butter. pretty much whatever I have). If you have some time to sit around, I throw it up into a puff or half pony. Even if I'm going somewhere I'll throw this up in the car to give it a little stretch. When you're finished just shake it out and fluff at the roots. By the second day it expands nicely, and dries very soft. I sometimes have to twist the front few pieces, that's just because my hair is kind of straight right there and doesn't like to cooperate with the rest of curls (no it's not damaged, I cut it off and it grew back the same :( ). This method has become so reliable to me I don't even do twist outs anymore. They were always so fickle for me anyway. Hope this helps. I really think the whole thing is product application…

:)
