do you detangle more to prevent tangling of new growth or less to prevent over manipulation of hair and unnecessary breakage?

I'm more particular about detangling into a stretch. If I don't do a good job during one session I don't try and correct it then I am patient and wait till the next wash to do a more thorough job.

This is tricky. I've done it both ways but I seem to do better with proper detangling each and every time.

I agree with divachyk. Better detangling prevents matts. When I.was long term stretching I caused serious tangles trying to go the low mani route.

Depends on what you mean by detangling more often. When I am deeper into my stretch (week 6 and beyond), I do a thorough (at least an hour long) detangling session through my scalp area using just my fingers every couple of days, with or without moisturizer as my hair dictates. It helps to prevent mats and ease out shed hairs, with tend to knot around the ends of my hair strands and cause breakage. I detangle with a comb only one to two times a week, either just before or after my shampoo and condition, and after I've throughly finger-detangled, to keep mechanical damage from tools to a minimum. So far, this has been working well for me, even in the last stages of a three-month stretch. :yep:

Before I became a Shower-Detangler; I'd thoroughly detangle right before a 'poo or 'co-wash day (which means I would only use a comb in my hair 2x's a week). If I avoided doing this, I would end up with matted patches all over my head...ESPECIALLY at my CROWN area!

More! More! More!

Stretching is some serious business for me. My newgrowth will mat tangle around itself if I let it sit dry for too long.

I'm 12 weeks post now and ain't got time to be losing hair because of laziness.

^^^ this

Low manipulation was a fail for me. I transitioned 24 months. I had to detangle twice a week.
