Don't get to invested in Tarens hair :nono: Her hair is her investment :yep:

Her sponsorships, events, and YouTube channel is all about HER HAIR. I don't thinks are followers are the die hard get to classic length asap type of followers. Taren's hair can be pornographic at time but people are also attracted to her personality. Let's face it, Taren's hair type is easier to retain and can withstand more damage than the majority of her followers.

This. She may backcomb it, frizz it and scrunch it to get it to look that way (in a big Afro cloud), but at the end of the day she has 3a hair that she abuses to look like a texture that is closer to her followers' hair so she can make money. Her hair can take a lot of abuse, but even the most resistant hair will break down under bleaching. Dyeing her hair back to brown will help mitigate some of the damage she incurred from bleaching, as she now does not have to reapply bleach to her hair to maintain the color. If she doesn't big chop (which I doubt she will do as the big 'fro is now part of her "brand"), then she can gradually grow out the damage without it looking too bad now that it's back to brown.
 
Is blonde the most damaging color to dye your hair because they actually have to lift your natural color?

But why....is my question? I've been natural since 2005 and haven't attended a single natural hair show/seminar/conference. I guess it just doesn't get that deep for me. It's just hair to me. I've cut it off so many times...grew it back...dyed it....oh well.

I never understood it either, but we all have our things we're interested in.

As an aside...
I don't know much about Taren aside from her channel - is this really her bread and butter?
 
Boohoo after reading this thread my dreams of playing in color once I finally hit MBL have been shattered. And I know it's probably been said already but "Damn Gina!", she looks so much like Tisha Campbell.

It's the bleaching that is damaging because you're lifting you hair to 4-6 shades which is a high risk of fried hair. I wonder if she just bleached and didn't add a color. and I believe her hair was not in good condition prior to bleaching. Doing a double process on long hair that possibly wasn't in good condition to begin with is probably why she is back at dark colors trying to hide the damage. Which is even worse.

It's not impossible to see bleach blonde healthy hair, but it depends on certain factors: the bleaching process, the health condition/durability of the hair, and using a lot of TLC x 10. Kim Fields has blonde dreads and that is a custom high maintenance TLC job-- well taking care of BBH (bleach blonde hair) is a custom high maintenance job period and Taren is not one of those people to be consistent with such a process.

I don't know if Taren did this herself or had a professional do it, but somewhere along the way she didn't do her research too well about going blonde. Someone didn't tell her:


The person has to be sure their hair can withstand that type of process (swatch test)
The hair must be in tip-top shape for lifting.
The higher the lift, the higher possibilities of damaged hair. (again it varies on if you have hair of steel or hair of brittle cotton)

I wouldn't be surprised if she used a double 20 or 40/double 40 volume on her hair. Beauticians know what I'm talking about. The only time I ever seen a 40(D40) process is if the hair is super short and in good condition so it can easily be rinsed out. The longer hair gets, the older it becomes, so bleaching long textured hair, (especially with a high volume developer) to an oblivion putting hair at risk.

I'm still licensed and don't do hair anymore, but I don't care what anyone says. The first time I saw her bleach job, either she was not taking proper care of her hair to begin with or made the poor decision of leaving it on too long, bleaching it to frizzy Hades. Just cause her hair is 3b with unicorn growth and stability doesn't mean it can withstand everything. I thought she figured that out the first time she BC'd all her hair off.

I used to wear my hair platinum blonde back in cosmetology school. My hair was between 3-4 inches with major shrinkage, and I wore it for about two-three years. I bleached my hair like 5 times using a 40 volume (yeah my hair could handle it :rofl:) then added the color to get the platinum blonde look and not one strand fell out or looked fried because my hair was healthy prior.

Moisture is a MUST so I sprayed my hair down everyday with Care Free curl or some Wave Nuveau. I had to use moisture at all times like I blinked. no problems with breakage. I maintained the High Maintenance job of caring for bleach blonde strands. Taren on the other hand jumped in head first and started taking pictures.

Yeah, she may BC again.

Poor babes, she really does jump in head first into things.

She put an Avocado honey whatever mask in her hair. You can't put that type of stuff in highly bleached/colored hair. It will turn it green. When hair goes through that type of chemical process, you can't be using Mother Earf stuff like that anymore :rofl: It's highly chemically treated meaning it is in a totally different ballpark and needs special type of products.

She had to go back to the beautician and get the weird green orange yellow color stripped from that avocado mask. High risk dryness and breakage increased now.

Questions on whether beautician gave proper consultation and hair care maintenance info to the client.

Questions on whether they spoke with Taren about the precautions

The misinformation that trimming causes a growth spurt :perplexed

The misinformation of "all you need is water and conditioner for your hair"
(Nope. bleached/colored hair is highly porous. Its needs to be moisturized 24/7 and plain ol water/conditioner won't cut it)

Why wasn't a porosity agent used so her hair could take color and bleach evenly. All her hair bleached in uneven colors



Taren having to get her hair done all over again because of the avocado honey mask.

Taren is a very sweet and caring girl, but after watching these 2 vids she comes off as soooooo.. naive and scattered? She should be the last person marketing anything or giving advice. So much misinformation.

I hate to call her out like this but it's too much misinformation going on. Too much. And it seems like Dickey and Amy really aren't too educated on highly textured AA hair. Especially when it's colored.

I'm really upset at the professionals. Now I really understand why some women don't go to the salon anymore. This disturbs me and now makes me want to go back to being a beautician.

I agree with you on all counts and I am glad someone said it. These are all thoughts that went through my mind as I watched the video. The general misinformation she was getting from professionals while receiving a treatment that is so likely to cause damage and problems down the road was disturbing to me also. The truth is the industry needs professionals like you desperately. The problem is it may be hard to get back in and build a client base since so many of us have been bruised in the past. Many have become mistrustful towards beauticians as well as reluctant to seek professional services.

It gives me hope though to hear you speak on this because it means that there is a growing number of professionals who are focused on healthy hair and sound information.

Well thank you. Yeah I don't know if I want to start over again. Building my clientele back in the day was hard because I was like the ONLY natural hair stylist on Earth :rofl: Now today it may be more difficult since everyone is on the natural kick and the information is abundant on the internet.

I've learned more here than I've ever learned back in the day as a natural stylist. Things are different from 10 years ago with all of the new networking an any ol body coming in on YouTube claiming themselves as a "Hair Guru" IMO there are only certain women who can have the Hair Guru title whether they're licensed or not. Natural or relaxed.

My definition of Hair Guru would be women with hair that speaks for itself: Lush, healthy, and have knowledge of the proper maintenance and care for hair. They are aware not everything works for everyone, or what they use may not work for everyone but their results show and they're not just throwing out any old advice.

I mean this day and age, a person doesn't have to be a professional to determine and research proper maintenance and growth of healthy hair, however, this is one of those situations where a professional was required and I could automatically tell they didn't know what they were doing.
 
I was kinda upset when she dyed her hair because as someone who has been there, I knew that it would start breaking and she's going to end up doing a BC and cut off that great hair. All that thick hair will be on a barbershop floor in 4 months.

Since her BC, she has had her hair colored several times, including having some blonde highlights at the beginning of her BC, so her hair was likely not in tip top shape before she got the bleach job done.
 
She's frackin up her hair. I "guess" she is having fun. I assume it brings in more viewers and ppl talking about her ******* up hair.
 
What I don't understand is that she went to the salon to dye her her blonde but when she wanted to dye it dark brown she just used a box colour and did it herself?

If it about the health of her hair, why wouldn't she go back to the salon to get it professionally coloured brown again.

She did a video some years ago about her work. I think the bulk of it was from home but I can't remember what it involved. Not sure if she still does it.
 
Taren really is very impulsive with her hair. I can remember she would say she was never ever ever gonna straighten again and like the next week she'd be like well I straightened it lol. I tried to tell her she could easily get the straight look she wanted with a rollerset and wrap but I don't think she's into that type of haircare/styling.

I wondered this too. She has been on tour alot so she might of not been in town or couldn't get in right away and just wanted it done.

I cringed watching the videos of her getting her hair dyed. I wonder if it would of been a different outcome if she didn't have to go back in for them to correct what she did by using that avocado mask.

She said in one of her vids whenever she dyes it black or brown she always does it herself done it so many times that She knows what she is doing now :-/

Pokahontas could you give me some instructions please? I think my hair does okay with heat but maybe i can try rollersetting.
 
I since a Big Chop in her future as well. In my humble opinion, she's a beautiful girl out of control with the bull nose ring, blonde clown hair and all. She needs to stop it all ready! (Mayb a NYC style) Shruggs

Sure, I do ponytail sets.....I put my hair in about 6 ponytails and roll it up with extra large rollers then do a silk wrap (comb the set out, wrap the hair and cover with saran wrap then sit under the dryer for 15 minutes). My hair comes out like I flat ironed it, actually better. For a visual you might check out YouTube for some tutorials. HTH
