I think I have the Tresseme product at home actually. Also interested in the Joico split end mender.. hmm..

I still think I need to give myself a heat pass only once a month (after my no heat challenge) but knowing there are products out there like this DEFINITELY change the game!
 
Seeing what heat has done to my hair has turned me off from using it. I plan to only use heat for occasional length checks but I might not even do that. I'm always afraid that my hair won't revert back once I straighten it. I've had heat damage before and I had to cut inches off!! If I really want to change it up and rock it straight sometimes, I might just get a wig/weave or something!!

Another poster in a different thread shared a blog post on Polyquarternium. It's supposed to protect your hair the way silicone does.
 
Checking in! I'm on day 8 of no heat. I'm REALLY enjoying it. I'm at the point in my life where I just want to be free and am ready to make the sacrifice (eliminating the heat) to get what I want. My hair won't look perfect every day, but who cares!! I love straight hair, but I also love big hair.

Products MAKE a big DIFFERENCE.
Wash - Primarily WEN or Creme of Nature Argan Oil. LOVE WEN
DC - Silk Elements Megasilk or WEN
Leave In - WEN or Taliah Wajid (Love both)
Styling - WEN restyling treatment, Wen anti frizz, Sally's Argan Oil. I usually combine two of these products.

I'll coat my twist out in either rice bran oil or a dab of Crisco, focusing on the ends.

I'm loving this!!

Day 21 of no heat. I know that's nothing to people who have gone years, but it's a long stretch for me.
 
I haven't used any direct heat in over a year. I gave my flat iron away and saw no reason to blow dry. I transitioned for about 15 months and clipped the rest off near my birthday in May. I just bought a babyliss steam flat iron bc it got good reviews and will probably straighten it for the holidays. I will likely only straighten every once in a blue moon. I rely on wash and gos for the most part. A someone mentioned above, laziness is a big factor lol. I don't have the patience plus I'm scared of damage.

I haven't used direct heat since becoming natural which will be 2.5 years in December. For the first 2 years i wore wash n go's and puffs. Now i wear twists 99% of the time.
 
yodie I'm going to try really hard! I'll be installing my upart wig next weekend as I'll be out of town the first week of December! If I can get away with not flat ironing my leave out, I think I can make it!

I straightened my hair yesterday. First time I used heat since Nov. 1st. and my hair has done much better. I gained some length and it's overall healthier. Even better, I've gotten used to wearing pinned up twist outs and I like my hair this way. It's all a win-win. I've gotten to know my hair and what it likes/prefers in this short time. I wash (WEN or I use a sulfate free clarifying shampoo), use a little leave in, seal with oil and twist. Butters and creams tend to dry my hair out.

I think this is the only way that I can see any type of overall health and length is if I leave the heat alone.

I need to add steam treatments or really get the DC going. I was too lazy to use my steamer, but I gotta pull that thing out.

Thank you ladies for starting this thread. I can't wait to see what my hair looks like next year this time or even three years from now.
 
tapioca_pudding, when I first joined LHFC, i joined a no heat boot camp for 1 year challenge. I thought I was going to die, since I used heat everyday for 12 years on my natural hair. The boot camp allowed 4 heat passes during the entire year. What I thought I couldn't do in the beginning turned into some amazing progress by the end. I learned to really love and care for my natural hair. I think that was the best part of the challenge for me--learning about what my hair liked and disliked. As a no heat natural, I learned that my hair needed moisture more than anything else. What I didn't realize until just a couple of years ago is that my hair was transitioning from being a heat trained natural to just natural. On November 1 of this year, I cut off 5 inches of heat damaged ends that I had since 2009, when I first joined that boot camp.

I also found that when wet bunning, if I tied my hair down with a 100% pure silk scarf, my hair would be dry in about an hour. If I was going out with a wet head, I would put a knit hat on top of the scarf. I never got sick from doing this. I live in Pennsylvania and we get cold winters too.

I hope this helps to encourage you on your journey. You really can do this. :yep:
 
I used to use heat a LOT. But I stopped for 8 months. I have recently been using low heat to diffuse my wash and go's. It works out well for me. My hair likes moderate heat and it keeps my hair from being so frizzy if I diffuse and my hair is SUPER frizzy if I let it air dry. I don't plan on doing any straightening though. Just diffusing on low to about 70% and air drying the rest of the way.
 
I wore my hair straight for the holidays and I'm sick of it. I haven't manipulated it much, but it's time to go back on my no heat kick. My hair really thrived with just 30 days no heat, so imagine 90 days? I'm challenging myself to 90 days with no direct heat with maybe one exception during those 90 days. I plan on steaming weekly.
 
I've been wearing my hair natural for almost 3 years (February will make 3 years) and I've never straightened it. I just don't have the desire, I find it weird that my family and friends want me to though.
 
Beany, what's your regimen? Do you twist, wear twist outs? Please share. What's your texture and length. I'd love to get to three years. Hope I'm not being too nosey. I'm just trying to find some ideas.
 
I don't do anything special unfortunately, just twists and twist outs. I have 4b BSL hair with low porosity. If I get the desire to straighten it I will, I just don't have it right now. I think knowing all the work that I would have to do to straighten also contributes to my lack of desire. I am so hair lazy lol. yodie

I wear my twist out styles in a pinned up chignon and that's only when I decide to take my twists down. I understand about the laziness. Blowdrying my hair at 48 days (NOT LONG TO MOST, BUT LONG TO ME) seemed harsh and felt like it took an eternity.

My goal is to continue to grow my hair out over the next two years so that I can actually leave my hair in twists, pin them up, and wear that as my style. Right now my twists don't look that flattering IMO.
 
I used to be Team Heat, but am learning to live without it myself and have found success with the following...

After washing and conditioning my hair, I use a microfiber towel to absorb excess water from my hair for 1-2 hours. Then I style my hair in plaits to airdry. I usually do this in the early evening right after work if during a weekday so I can avoid blowdrying my hair. In the morning once it's completely dry, I unravel the plaits.

Now on the first day, the style isn't going to be the length or shape that I exactly want due to shrinkage, so I'll put my braidout into a low/side ponytail or bun during the day and rebraid at night.

Once my hair has been stretched out over the next few days, I can get away with putting my hair in a high bun instead of rebraiding at night until my next wash day (which is every 2-4 weeks).

I airdry in a twistout. I wear the front pulled back with a barrett and the back hanging down. Called a halfup/halfdown.

I really am determined to make it through this year with minimal heat in order to accomplish my goal.

On wet hair, I use Giovanni Direct Leave-in mixed with a little EVOO. On dry twistout, I moisturize as needed with Qhemet Biologics BRBC. At night I barrett my hair lengthwise to the end, tie it up and go to bed.
 
As long as my hair is set on flexi rods I'm good, my hair will be laid like I used heat. And when I get several months post I just add some ecostyler gel on the edges and brush it in lightly with a soft brush and apply the curl formers and put satin scarf on, edges dry flat and my hair is smooth. Now air drying with no rollers, my hair will be frizzy and dry looking
